The Beer Drinker鈥檚 Guide to Yosemite

Yosemite National Park is many things, but subtle ain鈥檛 one of them. This gem of a park straddling the crest of California鈥檚 Sierra Nevada hits you over the head with its scenic grandeur. Yosemite鈥檚 towering granite domes, thousand-foot-tall waterfalls, wildflower-dotted meadows, and skyscraping sequoias are the stuff of national park dreams. And even though it鈥檚 one of the country鈥檚 most popular parks, Yosemite鈥檚 vast wilderness holds plenty of quiet escapes.

Count among Yosemite鈥檚 biggest fans. This spring, the brewery is featuring a of its flagship Pale Ale dedicated to four national parks, Yosemite included. (The other three are Big Bend, Great Smoky Mountains, and Yellowstone.)

The beer hasn鈥檛 changed, but the artful limited-edition packaging shines a spotlight on these iconic parks. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is backing that up with a donation to the to support wildlife and habitat conservation. 鈥淥ur national parks are a jewel that we need to preserve,鈥 brewery founder Ken Grossman says. 鈥淐onnection to nature is really critical. I think it鈥檚 our legacy to preserve those places forever.鈥

Amie Engerbretson, professional skier and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. ambassador, agrees. 鈥淭he national parks are where you see the very best that Mother Nature has to offer,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd they鈥檙e so accessible, it makes it possible for all people to see some of the coolest places in the world.鈥

With 1,200 square miles and more than 750 miles of trail, it can be hard to decide exactly where to spend your time in this park. Here鈥檚 our guide to Yosemite鈥檚 can鈥檛-miss spots to hike, camp, explore, and 鈥渃heers!鈥 a day well spent.

Best Alpine Lake Hike

Cathedral Lakes

Tuolumne Meadows, a mountain-ringed meadow at 8,600 feet, is the picture of high-country heaven and the jumping-off point for superlative hikes to lofty lakes and peaks. This seven-mile round trip to a pair of is Engerbretson鈥檚 top pick to see a lesser-visited, bigger-views area. Hop on the John Muir Trail and start gently climbing southwest. When the trail forks, head right to Lower Cathedral Lake for views of Cathedral, Echo, and Tressider Peaks reflected in the water. Make it a double by taking the .8-mile side trip to Upper Cathedral Lake on the way back.

Pale Ale moment: Post up at a quiet spot at , near where you started, and you might wonder why you went anywhere at all.

Best Yosemite Valley Day Hike

Mist Trail鈥揓MT Loop

This route tracing the Merced River past two huge waterfalls is no secret鈥攏othing this beautiful could be. But like many iconic hikes, it鈥檚 totally worth doing鈥攋ust start at sunrise to avoid the conga line. For an unforgettable 8.5-mile loop, hoof it a mile along the to the first major viewpoint at the Vernal Falls Footbridge. If you think the 317-foot waterfall is impressive now, just wait until you continue 600 steps up to the top. (This section is steep and can be wet and slippery.) Press on to the even larger Nevada Fall, a 594-foot tumbler, before looping back down to the valley via the John Muir Trail, which offers views of Half Dome and Liberty Cap en route.

Pale Ale moment: Nothing beats El Cap Meadow, where you can spot climbers on the face of El Capitan or just cool your feet in the Merced River, ice-cold Pale Ale in hand.

Best View

Taft Point

Get a golden eagle-eye view of Yosemite Valley at Taft Point, a 7,500-foot outcropping that stands more than 3,000 feet above the valley floor. Taft is like its more famous neighbor, Glacier Point, but without the crowds (or guardrails). It also serves up one of the best sunset views in the park. Reach Taft Point on a mellow 2.2-mile hike (round trip) that starts on .

Pale Ale moment: The nearby , on Glacier Point Road, is the perfect spot for a pine-shaded happy hour. The campground is located at more than 7,000 feet elevation, so the season is short (mid-July to September). Sites are reservable two weeks before arrival and go fast.

Best Campground

North Pines Campground

Engerbretson recommends pitching a tent in Yosemite Valley for its spellbinding mountain views, and there鈥檚 no place better than this ponderosa pine鈥搒haded campground on the Merced River.

Pale Ale moment: Build a campfire (if ), pull up a camp chair, and you know the rest. Note:, like all Yosemite Valley campgrounds, is in high demand. Go for the the fall before your intended trip for a better shot at snagging a spot.

Best Big Trees Hike

Guardians Loop Trail

is where it鈥檚 at if you want to hike among the largest trees in the world. More than 500 mature sequoias grow here, some prominent enough to sport names like Famous Couple, Grizzly Giant, and Three Graces. Tour the goods on this 6.5-mile lollipop loop from the main trailhead to the upper grove.

Pale Ale moment: After the hike, choose a bench under a sequoia and enjoy feeling very, very small.

Best Peak Hike

North Dome

Want sweeping, dome-top views of Yosemite Valley without the vertigo (and permit logistics) of Half Dome? North Dome is your granite monolith. Half Dome鈥檚 slightly shorter northern cousin鈥7,540 feet versus 8,839 feet鈥攐ffers a similar panorama with a close-up look at Half Dome itself and a walk-up approach, no cables required. Take the south through conifer forest to the airy dome, a 10.4-mile round trip.

Pale Ale moment: A day like this deserves a night to match. Reserve a site at , just a mile from the trailhead (open mid-July to mid-October).

Note: It鈥檚 always smart to check the before your trip for conditions and safety information, as well as where alcohol consumption is permitted.

Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., founded by Ken Grossman in 1980, is a pioneer in craft brewing. With breweries in California and North Carolina, it鈥檚 known for quality ingredients, innovation, and sustainability. Popular beers include Pale Ale, Hazy Little Thing, and Torpedo. Learn more at .

Filmed for climbers and gift-wrapped for the Free Solo mainstream audience, this new feature documentary about Emily Harrington is poised to shake up the all-male El Cap canon.

鈥楪irl Climber鈥 is an Incredible Climbing Movie鈥擮nce You Get Past the Title

Yes, Girl Climber has an oversimplified title. But it鈥檚 also the complex, vulnerable, and deeply inspiring story that adventure-obsessed audiences deserve.

Directed by Jon Glassberg, this 83-minute documentary describes how Emily Harrington鈥檚 life and two-decade-long climbing career culminated in one audacious goal: to become the (5.13b) on El Capitan in a day. Stymied by exhaustion, hailstorms, rope burns, mental fortitude, and sometimes one single move, Harrington persists through four attempts on the route in 2019 and 2020.

Glassberg, owner of the production company and the man behind dozens of shorter climbing documentaries, says that he didn鈥檛 want his first feature-length film to feel like a beta video. With nearly ten years of footage, Glassberg is able to expand beyond the one or two side plots that typically decorate shorter adventure documentaries.

鈥淭his is a holistic look at an incredible woman鈥檚 life in the adventure world,鈥 he says, 鈥渇rom the top of Mount Everest to crazy expeditions in Myanmar and ultimately climbing Golden Gate in a day.鈥

Harrington鈥檚 Dream Team

Braided within Harrington鈥檚 narrative are three pivotal, developing relationships: her mentor-mentee relationship with , who passed away in 2022; her friendship with ; and her relationship with her husband, high-altitude mountain guide . All three support her during her attempts on Golden Gate through constant belays (Honnold), gentle pep talks (Ballinger), or healthy debriefs (Nelson).

It鈥檚 through these close relationships that we learn so much more about Harrington than we would through just climbing footage and interviews. When Harrington falls on the Freeblast in November 2019, we experience it through Honnold, whose normal expression breaks into wide-eyed alarm.

Something we haven鈥檛 seen in other feature-length climbing films is the consistency of a female mentorship like the one Nelson extended toward Harrington. After every one of Harrington鈥檚 self-described failures, their text conversations fade into the screen. It鈥檚 almost like we鈥檙e living Harrington鈥檚 recollection through what she shares with Nelson.

The most powerful moment in the film comes when Harrington falls on her fourth attempt, smashes her un-helmeted head against the granite, and all but gives up. She sobs openly, looking up at the summit, and gathers her grief into one brave statement: 鈥淪omeday, I鈥檒l do it.鈥 Ballinger, however, is unfazed. He corrects her gently: 鈥淵ou鈥檙e going to do it today.鈥

A Unique Addition to the El Cap Canon

With references to , a cameo from , and, of course, Honnold, Girl Climber adds Harrington鈥檚 story to the existing El Cap cinematic universe for mainstream audiences, which primarily consists of Valley Uprising, The Dawn Wall, and Free Solo. The film鈥檚 goal of building upon this oeuvre echoes Harrington鈥檚: to join the elite group of heroes who have sent Golden Gate in a day. At the time, that list only included Honnold, Caldwell, and the late Brad Gobright.

On each attempt, Glassberg captures Harrington鈥檚 failures, and the resurrection of her self-confidence, with unbelievable clarity. One of the most inspiring parts of the film, however, is rather mundane: watching Harrington鈥檚 discussions with Honnold about gear and supplies. Despite Honnold鈥檚 good-natured sandbagging, Harrington confidently prioritizes her own needs and comfort on the wall.

鈥淚 think it would be tough to make this more comfortable,鈥 he jokes before her final go, looking at everything she planned to haul up the wall.

鈥淵up, that鈥檚 the whole point,鈥 she replies, unbothered.

In another scene, she insists on bringing her extra chalk and breakable ice packs, even though Honnold thinks it鈥檚 too much. She鈥檚 sitting across from the most famous climber in the world, and instead of trying to impress him or apologizing for needing extra gear, she鈥檚 reminding him to bring up her extra things. Her goals and comfort matter so much more than his assumptions. And that鈥檚 something every female climber truly needs to see.

Girl Climber does have some misses. For example, the movie鈥檚 title suggests an arc about sexism that the plot doesn鈥檛 necessarily deliver. But ultimately, the authentic and vivid storytelling in Girl Climber creates several layers of inspiration for both a climbing and mainstream audience.

The Emotional Tension Stays High

From the start, Girl Climber does an incredible job building the stakes. Five minutes in, a montage of Harrington winning five National Championships and climbing Everest condenses into one powerful belief: 鈥淚鈥檓 really proud of my career so far, but if you want to call yourself a successful all-around climber, you鈥檝e got to be up on El Cap.鈥

As a film,听Girl Climber聽skillfully avoids several climbing tropes and common pitfalls. While the plot inherently involves Honnold, Glassberg avoids overly relying on him for narration. Instead, the film deftly lets him provide side-character comic relief as Harrington bangs her head against the wall鈥攕ometimes, literally鈥攁s she rehearses the route.聽Girl Climber聽also does not shy away from vulnerability; Harrington grieves her failures openly and carries no air of defensiveness or overconfidence. And even though we know she eventually sends,听Golden Gate鈥榮 five cruxes act as one, shapeshifting villain and bring an unpredictable tension to each of Harrington鈥檚 attempts. At each sequence, we鈥檙e still looking for clues to whether she鈥檚 going to send聽right now. If she holds on through a crux sequence, the music crescendoes; if she falls, the music halts, like a dream popped.

A Closer Look at the Title

奥丑颈濒别听Girl Climber聽captures mainstream audiences with a plain and to-the-point description, its title hints at an insult that is never actually delivered. Harrington alludes to the mansplaining she experienced during her project, but doesn鈥檛 elaborate much beyond slightly condescending comments. Nor does this theme rise to the fore. Glassberg had good intentions and sharp marketing instincts, but having聽Girl Climber聽as the title overexaggerates the role of sexism in the film.

One could argue that tiles are always reductive, especially short ones. But when a brief label embodies the heart of the story, such as聽Free Solo,听The Dawn Wall,听and聽The Alpinist, the glory of the accomplishment casts itself back onto the subject. Honnold鈥檚 free solo of聽Free Rider, Caldwell鈥檚聽Dawn Wall聽redpoint, and Marc-Andr茅 Leclerc鈥檚 bold alpinism each defined their legacies; their movies are appropriately named. But聽Girl Climber聽doesn鈥檛 add anything to Harrington鈥檚 legacy besides the most straightforward biographical info. It鈥檚 trivializing; it might as well be about a five-year-old in the gym instead of a world-class professional athlete in her thirties.

girl climber movie film emily harrington

The movie鈥檚 title and its asterisked subtitle, 鈥淪tronger Than Stereotypes,鈥 remind us that female climbers face stereotypes. However, the film鈥檚 only example of this is the media鈥檚 treatment of Harrington as a 鈥渄amsel in distress鈥 after her viral accident in 2019.聽Good Morning America鈥榮 portrayal Harrington as reckless and lucky to be saved by Honnold is most definitely a combination of sexism and the post-Free Solo聽deification of Honnold. But it also represents a misunderstanding outside the climbing world of just how normal Harrington鈥檚 simul climbing really was. Overall, the flash of sexism in聽Girl Climber fades in comparison to the film鈥檚 real, dynamic antagonists: Harrington鈥檚 own expectations, gravity, slippery granite, and time.

For her part, Harrington says that she did not choose the title. 鈥淚 actually really hated it at first, and kind of laid into Jon about it when he told me,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 was like, 鈥榃hat is this? It鈥檚 diminishing. I don鈥檛 like it at all.鈥欌 But after talking it out, Glassberg convinced her that the movie would turn the demeaning phrase 鈥済irl climber鈥 into something that means strength.

鈥淭he movie was pitched many, many times as flipping the script on the male-dominated climbing scene,鈥 says Glassberg. 鈥淲e really wanted to draw attention to the fact that Emily鈥檚 doing this remarkable achievement that very, very few people are capable of doing, and that she has this extra layer of stuff that she has to face because she鈥檚 a woman.鈥 To Glassberg, the extra burdens Harrington faces include her ticking biological clock and the additional scrutiny she faces as a woman on El Cap. 鈥淲e just kind of saw it from the way the media latched onto things, with the 鈥榙amsel in distress鈥 idea,鈥 he says. Calling attention to sexism, he explains, is the goal.

girl climber movie film emily harrington
Harrington battling the Monster. (Photo: Courtesy of Red Bull Studios)

I don鈥檛 doubt that Harrington, like all female climbers, has faced misogyny and stereotypes in climbing. However, as a female climber myself, I cringe at seeing one of the most accomplished climbers of our generation summed up in this reductive phrase, especially a hypothetical one. If anyone has ever lobbed 鈥済irl climber鈥 as an insult at her, the film does not show it. Perhaps Glassberg intended that, but the discomfort is still there.

Harrington confirms that I鈥檓 not alone in feeling this way. 鈥淚 asked a lot of climbers what they thought of the title, and they had the same reaction as I did,鈥 she says. 鈥淎gain, this is the mainstream versus the core. I asked a lot of people who didn鈥檛 climb, and they were just like, 鈥淥h my god, that title鈥檚 amazing, I love it so much.鈥

For that reason alone, even if a core audience of female climbers dislikes the name, calling the film聽Girl Climber聽was a smart business decision, and one that鈥檚 likely to pay off with millions of eyes on Harrington鈥檚 plot. In the long run, if a movie name disliked by a niche audience is what causes mainstream audiences to experience the story and know that women, too, climb El Cap, I understand why Glassberg would take it. After all, the general public has different understanding of rock climbing than climbers themselves. To someone whose only exposure to the sport is聽Free Solo, female climbers with Harrington鈥檚 grit and r茅sum茅 might as well not yet exist. What feels insultingly obvious to climbers like me might be, in fact, a necessity to break into the public鈥檚 collective consciousness. But if that鈥檚 true, let鈥檚 admit it right here鈥攁nd acknowledge that male climbers have never had to infantilize their story鈥檚 names in order to achieve broad recognition. In an ironic and meta way,听Girl Climber鈥s title does more to prove that female climbers still face sexist barriers than the movie鈥檚 actual storyline.

Want to catch a screening of聽Girl Climber? The film is screening at the 国产吃瓜黑料 Festival in Denver, Colorado, May 31鈥揓une 1, followed by a Q&A with Emily Harrington and Jon Glassberg. Tickets available聽.

Catching Up with Harrington

The following interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.

Harrington wore Honnold鈥檚 shoe outside of her shoe to make the Monster easier. (Photo: Courtesy of Red Bull Studios)

Climbing: What鈥檚 it like to watch this movie four and a half years after freeing Golden Gate in a day?

Emily Harrington: I didn鈥檛 anticipate it would take this long to create the film. I鈥檝e learned a lot in the process about how hard it is to create a documentary film, and honestly, it was really scary. I was pretty nervous to watch it. You鈥檙e your biggest critic, and I can barely listen to my voice message machine because I don鈥檛 like the sound of my voice. It was really stressful, actually, to watch it and see the story unfold. As human beings, we evolve and we change so much. In the last five years. I鈥檝e had a child and been through that transition, so it鈥檚 just an interesting experience to see who you were and what you cared about.

Climbing: When you announced the movie on Instagram, you wrote that your quiet moments of struggle, fear, and self-doubt gave way to stories of heroism and sensationalism that only the mainstream media could drum up, and none of it felt like your true experience. What aspects of your story do you feel were twisted into heroism and sensationalism?

Harrington: It was just the sensationalism of climbing up on El Cap. People think it鈥檚 this crazy, death-defying, adrenaline-fueled endeavor, and it鈥檚 just not that for me. I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 like that for most climbers. It was putting someone on this superhero-level pedestal and making them seem like they鈥檙e not a human, and it made me feel a little bit sensitive about it all. It happens with any achievement, when you have the greatest, the hardest, the first鈥攁ll of these things.

Climbing: When Girl Climber was in production, did you have any other movies in mind that you hoped it would be similar to?

Harrington: I hoped it would be more of a female story on El Capitan, a little bit similar to The Dawn Wall, because they鈥檙e both free climbing. They鈥檙e both the kind of niche achievements that the mainstream doesn鈥檛 totally understand, but I thought that The Dawn Wall did a really good job of explaining what it was that those guys did, and how much effort and commitment it took. I just wanted it to be an inspiring female story on El Cap, because women also climb up there. And we don鈥檛 have that many female climbing stories, honestly.

Climbing: Jon told us that he saw a renewed psych in you during COVID. How did your thinking about Golden Gate change throughout early 2020?聽

Harrington: There were multiple reasons. I had this bad fall, and I knew immediately that I could go back. I remember Jon being like, 鈥淣o pressure, you could be done with this project.鈥 And I was like, 鈥淣o, I know that I made a mistake.鈥 It wasn鈥檛 this random occurrence that I can鈥檛 control. I felt really grateful that I was okay and I walked away from it. It took a while to mentally recover, but I immediately knew that I could go back and I could be better. Then COVID was helpful, because a lot of us during COVID felt a little bit aimless. This was this thing that I could hold onto and be like, 鈥淲hen Yosemite opens back up again, I鈥檓 gonna go back.鈥 Right now, I have nothing better to do than really think about how to prepare for it and how to train for it. Thankfully, climbing is such a complicated sport. You can really creatively train for rock climbing in your house.

Climbing: What kind of advice or support does the sports therapist give you? And do you talk with them through every major project, or was this specific to Golden Gate?

Harrington: I work with a sports therapist, like a mental health coach, and I have since 2019. It鈥檚 been wildly helpful for me. It wasn鈥檛 just for that project; I still talk to her probably twice a month. It鈥檚 really about leading into your feelings, validating your feelings, and understanding that body-mind connection. A lot of athletes can neglect that mental side. In the past few years, I鈥檝e really learned how important it is to train that side of things. It鈥檚 work. It鈥檚 training, and you have to think about it like that. It is something that we have to train, like a muscle, and it is very intimately connected to our physical bodies and our performance, as well as, our well-being and happiness. So, that鈥檚 another reason why I think it鈥檚 super important. But a lot of what we do is about how I鈥檓 feeling鈥攆ear, anxiety, failure, and motivation. It鈥檚 just a lot of letting those things come up and not judging them, but being really aware of them, and of how to work through them and move forward.

Climbing: What advice do you have for people who want to free climb El Cap in a day?

Watch the video below for Harrington鈥檚 response.

Climbing: What鈥檚 your current focus in climbing right now?

Harrington: All of it. I trained really hard this year, probably harder than I have since Golden Gate. I wanted to climb 14c, and I went to Spain with that specific objective. I fell short of my goal, but it鈥檚 okay. I ended up climbing a 14a that I was really excited about and really proud of. It was kind of my first big thing away, with Adrian gone, and bringing our son with us, and having the chaos of single parenting and trying to do a big trip. I succeeded in that, and it made me more motivated and excited to keep going and see what else I can do. Now that I have a kid, I鈥檓 a little more deliberate and focused. I actually think that鈥檚 helped me a lot in my climbing, so I鈥檇 love to climb harder sport routes. I鈥檇 love to climb my hardest grade. I think that鈥檇 be really cool.

Extend Your Athleticspan. Here鈥檚 How.

The only problem with all the active pursuits you love? You know you can鈥檛 do them forever. But what if you could do them longer and maintain a higher level of performance now and for years to come?

Enter . The company is reimagining health care for people who care about staying active, bringing the kind of obsessive, athlete-focused attention the pros get to the rest of us. It鈥檚 a radical new approach, and it鈥檚 changing the equation when it comes to aging and athletic performance. As the company鈥檚 chief medical officer, Dr. Desmond Wilson, puts it, 鈥淚 want you to be able to do what you love in some form for the rest of your life.鈥

Created for people who can't imagine a life without being active, Eternal helps you build a holistic strategy for your fitness, health, and aging goals.

What Makes Eternal Unique

Extending your 鈥渁thleticspan鈥 requires a new, high-performance health care program unlike anything seen before. Here鈥檚 how it works.

Comprehensive Tests

The diagnostics go way beyond the basic blood labs and assess for whole-body, sport-specific fitness. Doctors look at more than 195 biomarkers related to health and athletic performance, including hormone levels, bone density, blood sugar, and body mass. There are tests for VO2 max and lactate threshold, a DEXA scan for body composition, and sport-specific strength, power, mobility, and stability tasks. 鈥淚 had never undergone such an extensive workup,鈥 says a runner who joined Eternal in the fall of 2024.

Expert Team

Eternal assembles an integrated team of advisers and practitioners that might include doctors and experts in performance medicine, nutrition, behavioral health, sleep, coaching, and women鈥檚 health. And these experts actually talk to each other, so the whole team is evaluating your situation. That means, for example, the trainer who is considering your joint pain is talking to the doc reviewing the endocrinology results. And the term 鈥渆xperts鈥 is not used loosely. Member advisers include high-caliber specialists like female physiologist and nutrition scientist Stacy Sims and Golden State Warriors vice president of player health and performance Dr. Rick Celebrini, PhD.

Eternal
Whether you鈥檙e an elite or lifestyle athlete, Eternal maximizes your health, challenges your performance edges, and discovers areas of intervention that typical healthcare providers don鈥檛 address. (Photo: Eternal)

Personalized Plan

Everything is designed to address your particular needs and real-life changes. Injuries to manage? A race coming up? Hormonal shifts in perimenopause? Whatever your goals, from completing a fun run to winning a century ride, your team takes it all into account to form a complete picture. 鈥淲e take in all this data in the context of you as an athlete and a person and where you are in life, then we come up with strategic priorities,鈥 says Wilson, an internal medicine physician and dedicated trail runner himself.

The Member Experience

For the past 25 years, Kim Gaylord and her husband have built their summers around trail running. For six weeks, they drive their camper van from their Northern California home to their favorite trails across the West, from the Sierra Nevada to the Rockies. 鈥淭hose are the happiest times,鈥 says Gaylord, 54, who runs every week, year-round. 鈥淚 want to continue having an active, healthy lifestyle, to be able to still go on these van trips, running up mountains.鈥

But as she鈥檚 entered her sixth decade, the former competitive ski racer has faced new struggles, from symptoms of menopause to waning energy. Gaylord鈥檚 primary care doctor didn鈥檛 help. 鈥淭he general health system is extremely frustrating,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou tell your doctor that you鈥檙e a runner, and they think it鈥檚 too extreme.鈥 She needed a support system that understood running isn鈥檛 just a hobby, but a key piece of her identity.

Eternal
With Eternal you get extensive diagnostics, an elite team of experts to make sense of it all, and a guided plan that reflects the life you want to live. (Photo: Eternal)

That鈥檚 when Gaylord decided to try Eternal. Like all members, Gaylord started with a thorough in-person physical assessment. 国产吃瓜黑料: How did your fascination with the ocean first begin?

Guy Harvey: My siblings and I grew up in Jamaica on a cattle farm, and our parents loved the outdoors, particularly fishing. From early on, we were snorkeling and fishing as much as possible during school holidays. My love for the ocean became my career in the early 1980s as I went on to complete a Ph.D. in fish biology and fisheries management. I was painting marine life at the same time. By 1985鈥攚ith a potential career as a marine wildlife artist鈥擨 left academia, and my hobby became my profession. In 1999, the team formed the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, and for the last 26 years, we have been conducting research on sharks and rays, billfish, and tuna.

In what ways are you motivating others to understand the importance of ocean conservation?

The Guy Harvey Foundation (GHF) provides students, educators, and the general public with fun, engaging content that highlights the importance of our oceans and what needs to be done to conserve them. With a state-standardized marine science curriculum and resources for educators to utilize the lessons in their classroom, the GHF aims to 鈥淕et Kids Salty鈥, growing their understanding of and appreciation for our oceans. The GHF also produces informative and entertaining videos that give people a peek into the fascinating undersea world.

GHF advances ocean conservation through education and research programs by providing marine science educational materials, teacher development workshops, and conservation initiatives like the Guy Harvey Conservation Education Program. The GHF also funds cutting-edge marine research to support sustainable fisheries, protect marine biodiversity, and improve ocean conservation efforts. GHF collaborates with leading scientific institutions, including the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Nova Southeastern University, Stanford University, the Harte Research Institute, the Dolphinfish Research Program, and more well-established research partners to conduct studies on species like sharks, billfish, and other pelagic species.

Lastly, the GHF partners with Florida Sea Grant to award scholarships to university students in Florida studying marine science, fostering the next generation of conservation leaders. To date, GHF has awarded $482,700 in scholarship funds to support the research of 98 students at 12 Florida universities.

Your 国产吃瓜黑料 Dog Benefits from a Healthy Diet and Exercise, Just Like You

Proper diet and exercise are just what the doctor ordered when it comes to living a healthier and longer life, for us and our canine friends. 鈥淛ust like people, the secret to longevity for dogs is to eat healthy and exercise,鈥 advises Dr. Justin Toth, veterinarian and owner/founder of Dallas Highway Animal Hospital. Here are a few ways to help your faithful adventure buddy stay in peak condition鈥攏ow and for years to come.

(Photo: The Farmer’s Dog)

Start with Proper Nutrition

A healthy diet is the foundation of your dog鈥檚 overall well-being. In line with the current pushback against ultra-processed human foods, pet owners are ditching traditional, highly processed dry food in favor of more nutrient-dense whole food. 鈥淔eeding your dog healthy, pre-portioned food can add years to its life,鈥 says Dr. Jonathan Block, who practices an integrative approach to veterinary medicine.

Enter . Since its founding in 2014, the company鈥檚 mission has been to bring uncomplicated care to your pet through uncomplicated real food formulated by vet-nutritionists to be complete and balanced. The food is human-grade, gently cooked, and made with a single protein source, so you know exactly where your dog鈥檚 nutrients are coming from. All with the goal of giving your dog the best food to live its best life.

(Photo: The Farmer’s Dog)

In addition to nutrition, correct portioning is also paramount for longevity, with studies showing that dogs who maintain a healthy weight live on average up to 2.5 years longer than overweight dogs. 鈥淭he number-one disease we treat in pets is obesity, which is what I love about error-free calorie control,鈥 says Dr. Toth. 鈥淲e all know the measuring cup of food varies tremendously depending on which family member does the feeding.鈥 With personalized meal plans, The Farmer鈥檚 Dog takes the guesswork out of feeding. Each meal is precisely portioned based on your dog鈥檚 age, breed, size, and activity level, making weight management easier.

Add Regular Exercise聽

Most dogs thrive on physical activity. To keep them healthy and engaged, provide regular exercise. Outdoor activities like hiking, running, and swimming can all improve cardiovascular health and weight issues. It might be helpful to think about your adventure dog as an athlete: it needs a training regimen that suits not only its breed, age, and energy levels but also the changing of the seasons. Adds Rocky Mountain vet Dr. Karen Nann, 鈥淐ome spring, a lot of dogs are coming off a lazier winter鈥攕o start slowly and build up, adding a mile or two weekly to increase stamina.鈥

(Photo: The Farmer’s Dog)

Boost Mental Stimulation聽

Many experts say mental stimulation is as important as exercise. Feed your dog鈥檚 curiosity and keep their mind sharp with brain-challenging activities鈥攕uch as obedience training, puzzle toys, or scent games. Supplementing physical exercise with mental exercise also combats boredom and potential behavioral problems. 鈥淪ome dogs do better mentally if they have a 鈥榡ob,鈥欌 says Dr. Steve Conlin, a veterinarian in Eagle, Colorado. He notes this is especially important in herding and 鈥淭he job can be anything鈥損laying frisbee, retrieving a ball鈥揵ut it needs to be part of the dog鈥檚 everyday life.鈥

Don鈥檛 Forget Hydration聽

When exercising in the heat or on more strenuous outings, make sure your dog can always get to fresh, clean drinking water. 鈥淚f you鈥檙e overheated, your four-legged friend will be too,鈥 says Dr. Nann. 鈥淢y rule of thumb: double the amount of water I need to have enough for my pets.鈥 The only way for dogs to release excess heat is through their paw pads and panting, so if your dog starts to pant excessively or seeks shade, it鈥檚 time to take a break. Dehydration can lead to kidney damage or heatstroke, so always keep water on hand when you鈥檙e out and about with your dog.

Prevent Injuries

Again, think of dogs just as you do people: they can get hurt just like you, so take precautions and carry a dog-friendly first-aid kit. Be mindful of rough terrain and dangerous obstacles when deciding which route to take. Also consider investing in protective gear like dog booties, which can safeguard paws from cuts, burns, punctures, and snow buildup. 鈥淚 carry a dog safety pack that has booties, treats, bandage material, forceps, and Benadryl,鈥 says Dr. Nann. 鈥淭hese tools will cover allergic reactions, let you pull out prickers or cactus needles, wrap up abrasions, and provide some extra calories.鈥

(Photo: The Farmer’s Dog)

And be willing to adjust plans as your pet gets older. 鈥淎s adventure dogs age, they need to be forced by the owners to back off; they don鈥檛 know better, so it鈥檚 up to the owners to shorten the rides, runs, or skis,鈥 says Dr. Conlin.

When you put it all together, maximizing your adventure buddy鈥檚 health is not complicated. Just be deliberate about what you provide your pet, from nutrition to exercise. And of course you can never have too many ear scratches and pats on the head.

Packing tips from a Montana mom with two kids and a love for getting out year-round

6 Essentials for Family 国产吃瓜黑料s

I know it鈥檚 coming. No matter where we are or what we鈥檙e doing, no matter how recently they鈥檝e eaten, I have 15 minutes, tops, until I hear, 鈥Mooommm, I鈥檓 hungry!鈥 My kids, ages four and seven, are, shall we say, extremely food motivated on our frequent hikes, boat trips, and nordic ski sessions in our home state of Montana. Woe to the parent who forgets to pack snacks for such outings.

It鈥檚 not just food to remember. They say that she who fails to prepare prepares to fail, and nowhere is that more true than on a backcountry adventure with kids in tow. Packing the right stuff, from clothing to bandages to bug spray, can be the difference between a fun family outing and a tear-soaked sufferfest. Trust me, I鈥檝e been on both sides. You already know about the ten essentials鈥攃onsider this your addendum to that list, family edition.

Snacks (and More Snacks)

The single most important ingredient for success on our family trips? Having enough fuel on hand鈥攁nd not just any fuel. You want your kids to love the outdoors, so bring snacks they love. Forgetting this simple truth has resulted in my children sobbing, screaming, and refusing to continue down the trail more times than I鈥檇 like to admit. But doling out a steady supply of tasty snacks will keep them going鈥攈appily! And I鈥檓 not above using the promise of food to entice them up those final steps to the summit or back to the car.

One snack that has stood the test of time for us over the past few years: , which come in six flavors, including apple cinnamon, blueberry, and our favorite, raspberry. They鈥檙e made with whole grains and real fruit and are delicious enough to satisfy a kid鈥檚 palate, and their soft-baked texture means no melting, freezing, or crumbling when shoved into a backpack in any weather. , with their real fruit and cookie-like flavor, paired with whole-grain oatmeal, are also big hits with my kids. also offers brownies in double chocolate and salted caramel flavors, made from whole grains, real cocoa, and dates. Bonus: All of the above are vegan, dairy-free, and nut-free, so they鈥檙e great for slipping into my daughter鈥檚 lunchbox at her allergen-free preschool.

Oh, and when you鈥檙e packing? Start with how much you think your kids will eat, then double it.

Water Bottles

The second most frequently whined about topic on our trips: thirst. Hey, I get it鈥攚ater is essential for keeping kiddos hydrated and healthy, particularly on hot days. Each of my kids has a reusable stainless-steel water bottle, because these vessels are durable, sustainable, and easy to clean. Mermaids, princesses, and personalized sticker art are highly encouraged. (I swear it helps them drink more.)

Extra Layers

Of course you want a midlayer or jacket for each little in case the temperature dips or the wind picks up, but don鈥檛 stop there. Take it from a mom who once had to cut a sledding trip short because her son managed to a) find the only source of running water for miles, and b) break through the ice on top, completely soaking his boots and socks. It鈥檚 not overkill to bring multiple pairs of extra socks and even footwear. Now we pack another pair of secondhand winter boots for each kid on cold-weather excursions, just in case, along with spare mittens. If you have very little ones, also consider a whole spare outfit, even on summer trips. (Pee happens, right?)

Nature's Bakery

First-Aid Kit

We have a lightweight first-aid kit in a durable zippered pouch, and of course we pack it on every trip. Except the one time I didn鈥檛, and my daughter sliced her finger open on a tree branch. (Luckily, another hiker had first-aid supplies on hand.) You can buy convenient packaged kits or build your own. Be sure to include tweezers for removing splinters or ticks, gauze for bleeding, antibiotic ointment, blister treatment, children鈥檚 pain reliever and antihistamine, antiseptic wipes, and lots of bandages.

Sun and Bug Protection

Sunblock is a must, all year round. We reach for a water-resistant, reef-safe type with an SPF of at least 30. My kids squirm through an application of the typical goop styles, but those last much, much longer than spray-on brands. Tip: Try a face stick for easier application. Lightweight long-sleeve shirts also provide tons of coverage, no squirming required. Add a wide-brimmed sun hat and child-size shades on the sunniest days.

Most of us will also need bug spray, particularly in the wettest parts of the season. Picaridin and lower concentrations of DEET are considered safe for children, and both are effective in our experience. (Pediatricians recommend on kids under age two.) Many parents are tempted by 鈥渁ll-natural鈥 formulas, but generally, these just don鈥檛 work very well. One that does: oil of lemon eucalyptus products, but note that they鈥檙e not considered safe for children under age three.

Nature's Bakery

Toys and Books

Yes, rocks and sticks serve perfectly well as playthings. But just like with adults, special treasures can go a long way. A friend of ours always packs a stuffed animal on hikes; she repeatedly runs ahead and hides it along the trail, then the children have to find it. (They forget they鈥檙e even hiking.) Legos and Magna-Tiles on the picnic table have distracted my kids long enough to let me cook camp dinner in peace. And soon after my son learned to read, he loved packing a book to read in the tent.

I can鈥檛 promise that following all these hard-won tips will guarantee you a whine-free outing. But I can say that packing thoughtfully will put you in a strong position for making those quality family memories happen. And that鈥檚 about as good as it gets with parenting, right?

These New Ski Boots Go On Hands-Free Like a Slipper /uncategorized/rossignol-vizion-ski-boot-preview/ Fri, 04 Oct 2024 14:48:11 +0000 /?p=2683486 These New Ski Boots Go On Hands-Free Like a Slipper

Testers said they don't compromise on performance, either.

These New Ski Boots Go On Hands-Free Like a Slipper

In early December of 2023, SKI and 国产吃瓜黑料 editors sat around a conference table in Rossignol鈥檚 pop-up showroom at the Gravity Haus in Vail, Colorado, staring at a powerpoint presentation. Projected onto the wall were illustrations of a new ski boot the brand would be releasing in the fall of 2024鈥攁 boot, the brand claimed, that would address skiers鈥 biggest issue with ski boots: getting them on and off.

We sat and looked at slide after slide highlighting the Vizion鈥檚 key design and technology elements: a traditional four-buckle overlap boot; a steel spine; and something Rossi is calling 鈥淪pine Link Mechanism,鈥 an element that allows the back of the boot cuff to hinge backwards to widen the cuff opening, then lock back into an upright position. Each slide was bedazzled with phrases like 鈥渆asier entry,鈥 鈥渙ptimal performance,鈥 鈥減owerful flex.鈥

It all looked and sounded good, but as I sat in that darkened conference room, it was hard for me to get excited. Call me a jaded gear editor, but the Vizion boot just looked like a new hybrid of an alpine boot and a backcountry boot, with a fancier hike mode mechanism that Rossignol was putting a new spin on to speak to desperate ski boot customers: Not only is this boot easier to walk in, it鈥檚 a breeze to get on!

Then Jake Stevens, Rossignol鈥檚 North American alpine and bike category manager, handed me a real-life Vizion boot to try on. With the flip of a buckle, I disengaged the boot鈥檚 Spine Link Mechanism, placed the boot on the floor, stood up, and stepped into the boot鈥攈andsfree.

Color me impressed. But what really blew me away was reengaging the spine and buckling up; once locked in, the Vizion felt like a true alpine boot with a predictable flex. I鈥檇 expected it to feel like a backcountry boot, with a weird, hingey flex that comes from a walk-ride mechanism. But I was firmly locked into the 100-flex Vizion model on my foot, and when I drove my knee forward, the cuff moved with my shin exactly as a traditional four-buckle, overlap shell should.

Read more:

That鈥檚 what sets the Vizion apart. Ski boots that are designed to be more comfortable and easier to get on are not new鈥擭ordica brought back the rear-entry design with its (hands-free) boot, and plenty of brands make four-buckle overlap boots with a walk-mode to not only make it easier for skiers to walk in boots, but easier to get them on. But most of these ski boots compromise on performance in the name of comfort.

Rossignol claims that the new Vizion is not just a 鈥渃omfort鈥 boot aimed at the recreational skier. The Vizion line鈥攚hich encompasses 10 models across the unisex and women鈥檚 range鈥攊ncludes everything from a 130-flex low-volume offering down to an 80-flex high-volume option, making it for every type of skier.

Read more:

According to Rossignol, its goal in creating the Vizion was to keep the performance of a traditional overlap boot (i.e. consistent boot flex, feel, and function), but make it the easiest boot on the market to slip on and off the foot, solving the biggest pain point for skiers worldwide.

Mission accomplished? I haven鈥檛 had a chance to ski in the new Rossignol Vizion boot yet, though I鈥檓 definitely intrigued. But I鈥檓 no ski boot expert, so to gauge how legit the concept of this boot actually is, I turned to professional bootfitter Sam Tischendorf to get her take.

Sidelined by a knee injury last season, she also hasn鈥檛 had a chance to ski the boot yet, but she鈥檚 spent a good amount of time inspecting it at trade shows and chatting about it with her Masterfit colleagues (who have skied in it). From the sounds of it, bootfitters are bought into Rossignol鈥檚 new Vizion. Considering how can be, that鈥檚 saying something.

The following interview has been edited for length and clarity. Look for SKI鈥榮 official review of the new Rossignol Vizion boot in the fall.聽

Rossignol Vizion Preview with Professional Bootfitter Sam Tischendorf

JW: Sam, in your professional opinion, is the hype about this boot real?聽

ST: I think so. This is not just fairy dust sprinkled on a boot. It鈥檚 a legitimate solution for getting your foot into a ski boot. I was still hopping along on my bad knee and apprehensive about wrestling with a boot to get it on, but I was able to stand on my good leg and slide into the boot on my bad leg, hands-free and without a grimace.

Bootfitters seemed skeptical about BOA when it was introduced鈥攕ome still are. Do you get the sense that they鈥檙e more on board with the idea of the Vizion boot?

There鈥檚 more excitement with this Vizion boot compared with BOA in terms of actual technology. No offense to BOA, but all they did was put a new buckle on a boot that鈥檚 meant to wrap the foot a little better. Most brands are using BOA but doing so slightly differently, and across the board, I don鈥檛 think it鈥檚 that impactful of a difference.

The spine mechanism on this boot seems similar to a walk mechanism on a backcountry boot. Is it basically the same?

The technology Rossignol developed for this boot is unique. You open this latch on the lower buckle of the cuff that releases the spine of the boot, opening the cuff wider than any hike-and-ride boot does. You can then literally stand and slide into the boot hands-free. And the way Rossignol designed this boot, the buckles on the front wrapping section don鈥檛 get in the way.

As bootfitters, a solution we often use for folks who really struggle to get into their ski boots is a hike-and-ride boot, so we can open that walk-mode feature to help people slide their foot in. But a walk-mode feature is minimal compared to what the Vizion boot actually does.

Rossignol鈥檚 Spine Link Mechanism is primarily designed to help you get into the boot. But once you buckle up, you don鈥檛 have a massive walk-mode in the Vizion. This is not a super easy boot to walk around in necessarily, and it鈥檚 not designed to be used for uphill, which is why it doesn鈥檛 have tech inserts. It鈥檚 really an alpine boot with a mechanism built in to help you effortlessly slide into the boot.

How is the Vizion different from the rear-entry boots of yore? Those boots were all designed to address the ease of entry issue, but there鈥檚 a reason we don鈥檛 see those boots on shop shelves anymore.聽

The problem with rear-entry boots was that they just didn鈥檛 ski well. When you look at the Vizion when it鈥檚 closed up, it looks like a traditional four-buckle overlap boot. And by all accounts, that鈥檚 how it skis.

When I was walking around and flexing it, it felt like I was just in a regular four-buckle performance alpine boot. There was no feeling of 鈥渙h, this feels dodgy,鈥 or 鈥渢hey missed this feature because they focused on the ease of entry component.鈥 When you鈥檝e got the boot on, it feels like a boot you can really ski in.

And from everyone I talked to who was at the America鈥檚 Best Bootfitters boot test this spring, it sounds like it鈥檚 a really strong-skiing boot.

Who is the target market for the Vizion? Is it more casual recreational skiers who just don鈥檛 want to deal with the inconvenience of stiff boots?

It鈥檚 for everyone. If we鈥檙e being honest, we all wrestle with putting our ski boots on and taking them off. Within the bootfitting community, it鈥檚 the constant question on the table: How do we make a boot easier to put on and take off. It does not matter the skier鈥攁ll of us want and need more of that convenience.

So from a feature standpoint, we can sell this boot to a super casual, recreational skier who wants a 100 flex boot that鈥檚 comfortable and easy to get on. We can sell it to people who are a little less physically able to get into their ski boot, yet give them better performance than some of the rear-entry boots that are still floating around. But this boot is also for the expert skier who will love the boot from a performance standpoint鈥攈ow it skis. They might be interested in the ease-of-entry feature, but they鈥檙e also interested in the performance side of it.

Related:

Can you still customize it like a regular boot?

It鈥檚 made like a regular Rossignol boot, so you can custom fit it like any other Rossignol boots. From stretching to padding to whatever customization you typically do to your boot, you鈥檙e going to be able to do that to this boot, too.

Any early criticism or potential drawbacks to this boot?

My one complaint is that I think Rossignol missed the mark on the women鈥檚 Vizion boot in terms of aesthetics. It鈥檚 a really white boot with a plush, soft liner.聽 I鈥檓 afraid it will give women the wrong visual of what this boot actually is. Some lady customers might like the look, but it might take a while for some women to step away from the frilly visual and focus on the legitimacy of the boot from a performance standpoint.

And like any ski boot,听 Rossignol boots aren鈥檛 the perfect fit for every customer. I personally think Rossi boots work best for more moderate foot types鈥攕omeone who doesn鈥檛 have a pencil foot but does have a little bit of a heel bone. I鈥檝e found them to be fabulous for folks who have a higher instep鈥擱ossi boots tend to encapsulate that higher instep really well. They also tend to be good choices for skiers who are between two sizes鈥擨 find that Rossignol boots give you a few extra millimeters in length, so it can help with size differentiation.

But having the Vizion be available in so many different flex, last, and volume options definitely opens this boot up to a wider demographic.

First Look: Columbia Konos TRS OutDry

The holy grail of trail shoes? Instantly comfortable, lightweight, grippy, waterproof, and stable. That recipe is now a reality with the Konos TRS OutDry. And you can add reasonably priced ($120) to the list as well. Thanks to innovations in cushioning and traction that join an incredibly comfortable, secure-fitting upper that鈥檚 both waterproof and breathable, Columbia鈥檚 new Konos handles everything from gentle meandering paths to rugged and rocky summits. This is the shoe that will inspire more time on trails for everyone from beginning hikers to trail veterans.

Comfort First

Unlike boots with stiff soles and heavy-duty uppers that can be uncomfortable until well broken in, the Konos TRS OutDry feels great upon first step-in. A soft, seamless interior, plus a padded tongue and heel collar, envelop the foot, while the laces engage the Navic Fit鈩 system鈥攊ntegrated webbing that locks down the navicular bone for stability and support. And instead of a firm ride and inflexible sole, this shoe features shock-absorbing, joint-saving midsole cushioning that flexes naturally at the forefoot thanks to strategically placed outsole grooves. This is a wear-all-day kind of shoe with hike-all-day performance.

Lightweight Performance

All that cushy midsole foam is extremely lightweight while both softening impact and providing responsiveness in every step鈥攖here鈥檚 no mush here. Unique dome-shaped cutouts visible on the outsole (located directly under the heel and forefoot) further absorb force and return energy, combining with the cushioning to put a little extra spring in your hiking step. TRS stands for 鈥渢rail speed,鈥 as a nod to the lightweight resilience of that underfoot platform and its surprising energy return.

To deliver secure footing on a range of terrain, the Konos TRS OutDry features a proprietary rubber compound that excels on both wet and dry surfaces. The outsole’s lug shape, depth, and traction pattern underfoot were designed specifically for hiking. And the way it grabs hold of everything from loose, dry dirt to slick, wet rock inspires confidence.

All this tech comes in a seriously lightweight package: a mere 11 ounces per shoe.

Breathable Waterproofing

The mesh upper of the Konos TRS OutDry features TPU overlays with smartly placed cutouts for weight savings; there鈥檚 added armor where you need it and none where you don鈥檛. And the entire upper is protected by OutDry鈩 waterproofing鈥攁 bonded construction that blocks water from getting in while allowing internal moisture and excess heat to escape. That means the shoe remains plenty breathable while keeping your feet dry in summer rainstorms and shallow creek crossings or while splashing in puddles mid-hike just for the heck of it.

With its sleek all-black styling, the Konos TRS OutDry is ready to be your go-anywhere, do-anything shoe year round. As Ben Rainey, senior product manager at Columbia, puts it, the Konos TRS OutDry takes the best features of running and hiking footwear and fuses them into a shoe built for performance. 鈥淚t highlights the best technologies Columbia has to offer,鈥 Rainey adds, 鈥渕aking sure you stay cool, dry, and protected for all your outside activities.鈥
