Mikaela Shiffrin Crashes Out of Killington World Cup

Mikaela Shiffrin鈥檚 journey toward her 100th World Cup win took an unexpected turn on Saturday when a crash during the second run of the Killington giant slalom sidelined the ski racing legend. But while Shiffrin recovered off the slopes, the U.S. Ski Team delivered one of its strongest collective performances of the season, offering a glimmer of hope and momentum for American skiing.

Shiffrin was on the cusp of winning her 100th World Cup race when disaster struck.

The 29-year-old ski phenom lost her edge and crashed heavily in the Killington giant slalom. She somersaulted and hit two gates before abruptly stopping in the fencing. She asked ski patrol for a sled because she 鈥渨as in shock, entirely unable to move and worried about internal organ trauma,鈥 she said in a U.S. Ski Team statement. She went by ambulance to the local hospital for evaluation.

Doctors determined that she had had no damage to her ligaments, bones, or internal organs. She suffered a puncture wound to the right side of her abdomen and severe muscle trauma but did not get stitches for the wound 鈥渂ecause it鈥檚 too deep and there鈥檚 risk of infection,鈥 Shiffrin said in the statement.

鈥淪he is pretty sore. Her return to snow is TBD (to be determined) and more information will be forthcoming,鈥 stated the U.S. Ski Team.

Having difficulty walking, Shiffrin skipped Sunday鈥檚 slalom and instead cheered for her teammates from her lodging in Killington.

Paula Moltzan and Nina O鈥橞rien both scored career bests, with fifth and sixth, respectively, in the GS on Saturday. And 19-year-old Elizabeth Bocock鈥攊n eighth after the first run鈥攃ollected her first World Cup points by finishing 23rd. Katie Hensien also had a good race, climbing from 21st after the first run to 13th.

How the Day Unfolded

On a cold, blustery day, the usual raucous Killington crowd was waiting to see what could be Shiffrin鈥檚 100th win. She skied the first run so flawlessly that it looked like nothing would stop her. With a rare combination of strength, balance, endurance, smarts, and touch for the snow, Shiffrin has rarely DNFed鈥攕ki racing lingo for did not finish. In 274 World Cup starts across 13 seasons, she had only DNFed 18 times.

The last time she didn鈥檛 finish in a GS? Seven years ago.

So when she came onto Superstar鈥檚 steep final pitch on her second run and leaned in, losing her edge and somersaulting into the next gate, the crowd gasped, then sat silently as ski patrol converged on a downed Shiffrin. The crowd cheered as they brought her down in a sled, and Shiffrin raised a hand to wave. (For on-demand access,听 subscribers ($89.99/year) can watch these races anytime.)

A Home Snow Win

Shiffrin came to Killington hoping to reach the 100-win milestone on home snow. She spent a formative part of her childhood training just 38.4 miles from Killington鈥攁t Storrs Hill in New Hampshire. As an 8-year-old, Shiffrin and her older brother Taylor ate SpaghettiOs in the car after school, then trained under the lights. From there, she enrolled at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont鈥檚 Northeast Kingdom. The crowd was filled with many who knew her, and the Killington Cup was a race she loves.

鈥淚 love being here,鈥 she said the night before the GS. 鈥淚 love the crowd. I love the people. I love how gritty and determined everybody is to pull off the best World Cup race possible and how supportive everybody is. It鈥檚 so raw and real and New England.鈥

She had specifically targeted the Killington GS this year. She wanted to execute her best skiing on this hill, which had bedeviled her in previous races. In six previous Killington Cup GSs, she finished on the podium only three times. Without going into technical details, she called the hill 鈥渁 nuisance in GS.鈥

But on the first run of GS, it looked like she had mastered the nuisance. Only Olympic GS champ Sara Hector was within a half-second of her.

Since partnering with the Share Winter Foundation earlier this year, Shiffrin has been skiing for something greater than herself, and the records finally mean something. She has shifted her perspective and sees the record/milestone conversation as an opportunity to bring more attention to the sport鈥攁nd thus more money to an organization that aims to get more kids on snow.

Now, the 100th World Cup win is indefinitely postponed. Shiffrin still has a chance to celebrate the milestone win on home snow鈥攁t Beaver Creek, Colorado, near where she also spent much of her childhood and now owns a home. The women鈥檚 World Cup heads to Beaver Creek, Colorado, for speed races on December 14-15. Shiffrin plans to race the super-G on Sunday, Dec. 15. But that race is only two weeks away. Will Shiffrin recover by then?

Tremblant World Cup Canceled

In more ski-racing news: next weekend鈥檚 Tremblant World Cup was canceled. While Killington received 21 inches of snow on Thanksgiving Day, Tremblant was not as lucky. Due to a lack of snow, race organizers were forced to cancel the two women鈥檚 World Cup giant slaloms. The races were slated for next weekend, Dec. 7-8. 2024.

What Records Are Left for Mikaela Shiffrin to Break?

Over the past 13 seasons, Mikaela Shiffrin has broken more records than we can easily count.

Most World Cup wins? Check. Eighty-eight and counting.

Most wins in one discipline? Yup, 53 in slalom so far. No doubt more to come.

Most wins in a single season? You got it. Seventeen during winter 2018鈥19.

Most prize money won in a single season? Yes, last winter: 964,200 Swiss francs (just over $1 million) and 23,000 CHF more than men鈥檚 overall World Cup champion Marco Odermatt pocketed last year.

Shiffrin has always said she鈥檚 not after records; she wants to ski well. And when she does break them, she prefers the word 鈥渞eset鈥 so as not to diminish the achievements of those who skied before her. But for the stats counters, here鈥檚 a list of records that Shiffrin can reset in the coming years.

Most Overall World Cup Titles

Two Austrian legends hold the record for most World Cup titles: Marcel Hirscher won eight, Annemarie Moser-Pr枚ll has six. To date, Shiffrin has won five big crystal globes, given to overall World Cup winners, and is gunning for another this year.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 always been one of my biggest goals, season titles,鈥 she said in a pre-S枚lden press conference last month.

A sixth overall title would tie Shiffrin with Moser-Pr枚ll, whom Shiffrin met several years ago.

鈥淪he said something to me, like, 鈥榊ou just go for it, and you鈥檙e going to pass me,鈥欌 remembered Shiffrin. 鈥淚t was just pretty striking to me that her mind was already there at a time when nobody else鈥檚 was.鈥

鈥淪he鈥檚 a complete trailblazer in in ski racing,鈥 added Shiffrin, 鈥渁nd I would say that if I am able to match six overalls, I would consider that to be the biggest accomplishment.鈥

Shiffrin is a solid favorite to win her sixth overall World Cup trophy this year. As for tying Hirscher with eight, stay tuned.

Most World Cup Discipline Titles

For half of her 19-year-long World Cup career, Lindsey Vonn dominated the downhill rankings, collecting eight World Cup downhill titles from 2008 to 2016鈥攖he most discipline titles of any skier. Together with five in super-G and three in combined, Vonn has 16 smaller crystal globes in her trophy cabinet鈥攖ying her with Ingemar Stenmark for most.

Shiffrin has been similarly dominant in slalom and in the past decade, has claimed seven World Cup titles in the discipline. She鈥檚 a favorite to win one more this season, which would bring her even with Vonn for most World Cup titles in one discipline.

But catching Vonn鈥檚 and Stenmark鈥檚 total of 16 across multiple disciplines could be a stretch. With two giant slalom titles, plus one in super-G, Shiffrin currently sits at ten.

Most World Cup Points

In 2013, Tina Maze collected a record 2,414 World Cup points鈥1,313 more than her nearest competitor. That winter, the Slovenian competed in 35 World Cups across six disciplines and finished in the top 10 in 32 of them (also a record). Calling her point total 鈥渋ncredible,鈥 Maze had not set out that winter to hit the mark; she just wanted to win her first overall World Cup title. Which, of course, she did.

Last season, Shiffrin tallied 2,206 World Cup points on her way to her fifth overall title (breaking her previous highwater mark of 2,204 points set in 2019).

Shiffrin, though, has always aimed for quality over quantity. So don鈥檛 look for her to reset Maze鈥檚 record.

Most World Cup Podiums

Shiffrin may have reset Stenmark鈥檚 World Cup win record from 86 to 88 last season. But the legendary Swede still holds the record for the most World Cup podium finishes: 155. Shiffrin stands at 138, seventeen shy of Stenmark. Shiffrin finished on the podium in 18 World Cups last season, so she stands a good chance of resetting another Stenmark mark this year.

Most World Championship Medals

Christl Cranz dominated women鈥檚 ski racing in the 1930s, winning 15 world championship medals from 1934 to 1939鈥攖he most won by any skier (male or female). Back then, alpine skiers only competed in slalom, downhill, and combined. But world championships were held annually, not biannually as they have been since World War II.听Shiffrin has 14 world championship medals in her collection 鈥 just one shy of Cranz. Chances are the American will tie and possibly break Cranz鈥檚 record at the 2025 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, slated to be held in Saalbach, Austria.

Most World Championship Wins

Of Cranz鈥檚 15 world championship medals, 12 were gold鈥攁gain, more than any other alpine skier. So far, Shiffrin has seven world championship gold medals. Can she win five or six more? It depends on when the 28-year-old decides to retire.

Most Olympic Medals

Topping the list with the most Olympic medals, Norway鈥檚 Kjetil Andr茅 Aamodt won eight between the 1992 and 2006 Olympic Winter Games: four gold, two silver, and two bronze.

On the women鈥檚 side, Croatia鈥檚 Janica Kosteli膰 and Anja P盲rson won six each in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Kosteli膰 won three golds at the 2002 Olympics and a fourth in 2006; her other two medals are silvers. P盲rson only has one gold鈥攆rom the Olympic slalom in 2006鈥攐ne silver medal and four bronze.

Bode Miller holds the American record: six Olympic medals. For the women, Julia Mancuso has four.

To date, Shiffrin has won three Olympic medals: two gold (2014 and 2018 Games) and a silver (2018). The 2022 Beijing Games were a struggle for the American. But who鈥檚 to say she won鈥檛 win a handful more at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Cortina? It鈥檚 a ski resort that has treated her well. At the 2021 world championships in Cortina, she won four medals, including a gold in combined.

At the 2026 Olympics, the combined will be a team event, with one woman skiing the downhill or super-G leg and another competing in slalom. This new format could be fun; who doesn鈥檛 like a team event? Of the women currently on the U.S. Ski Team, Shiffrin and Jackie Wiles鈥攖he 31-year-old is back from surgery in spring 2022鈥攁re the only ones to have finished on the downhill or super-G podium in Cortina.

Mikaela Shiffrin on the Mental Side of Racing and Her Season Ahead

If you鈥檝e ever wondered what 28-year-old and two-time 2023 ESPY award winner Mikaela Shiffrin thinks is the toughest part of racing, well, it鈥檚 not actually the physical demands. We recently caught up with her during a quick break between training in Chile and jetting off to Europe to begin the World Cup season, and if there鈥檚 one thing clear it鈥檚 that Shiffrin is ready to ski, and we are more than ready to watch her season begin.

At the start of her season, it鈥檚 always hard to predict what exactly will become Shiffrin鈥檚 largest hurdle. And, as she told us, it might not even be a physicality. Shiffrin鈥檚 biggest challenge is mental when it comes to racing and competing. And even with her outstanding record and G.O.A.T. status (although ), she takes everything as it comes.

鈥淚 think its more difficult to train mentally [than physically] because you can鈥檛 train for something when you don鈥檛 know what to expect, so it鈥檚 more taking it as it comes versus training for something,鈥 Shiffrin says, adding 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how I鈥檓 going to feel at the first race or at the middle or end of the season. I need to use the support system around me, and just take it as it comes.鈥 She also places a heavy emphasis on the people she surrounds herself with who help prop her up.

鈥淭hat support system is the most important thing, and being able to take advantage of the time that we have together with my family and the closest people around me when I get that time those are things that keep me in a good mental place to be able to go to the races.鈥

And as the race season commences at the Shiffrin is ready, and excited to be back (and since that means it鈥檚 practically ski season in the Northern Hemisphere, we couldn鈥檛 be more in sync). We, however, aren鈥檛 staring down the slalom wondering if we鈥檒l secure 100 wins, unlike Shiffrin, who most certainly has it in the back of her mind.

鈥淩ight now, it鈥檚 not based off of any kind of record or specific kind of performance I want to have, it really just boils down to鈥 I want to ski fast, I want to still feel like I have the ability that I鈥檓 still improving, and I feel good.鈥 Oh, and on that coveted, golden hundred? 鈥淚t sounds kind of simple to say, and there鈥檚 a certain amount of focus I have to put on results, but I try to keep my focus on my skiing and the clarity I want to feel when I鈥檓 on my skis and how I want to race. Hopefully, that won鈥檛 be the biggest challenge this year since the record happened last year, but now everyone鈥檚 talking about one hundred so please just get out of my head,鈥 the latter comment she mentioned while shooing her hand away from her head, giggling.

Numbers and records aside, Shiffrin is already looking forward to her favorite event. It鈥檚 not on legendary soon-to-be Olympic snow in Cortina, or even the season opener in Soelden, Austria. Shiffrin has her eyes set on Vermont. will once again take place over Thanksgiving weekend and is set to have one hundred women from 21 nations competing for the podium.

鈥淚鈥檓 always excited for Killington. The home races are always really exciting. They always manage to pull it off just before the race because they have the most powerful snowmaking on the planet.鈥 She鈥檚 also looking forward to the roar of the crowds, 鈥淭he people come from all over the East Coast, and they鈥檙e the biggest crowds we see on the entire World Cup. The crowds are unbelievable.鈥

And a face within those massive crowds? Well, that might just be singer-songwriter and famed Vermont native Noah Kahan. Kahan has spectated and performed at the Killington Cup in years prior and recently had a profile written about him as , and the writer? None other than Mikaela Shiffrin, who happened to spend several years living closeby to Kahan鈥檚 hometown while attending Burke Mountain Academy.

鈥淚 got a chance to meet Noah this year, he鈥檚 done some projects with the U.S. Ski team, and he did a concert in Killington鈥 and then stayed for [the Women鈥檚 slalom] race and watched from the finish area, and at the time I didn鈥檛 make the connection. Then [this summer] came to the Taylor Swift concert with my teammates and me, and it was just the most wild experience.鈥 Shiffrin explained that despite thinking he was part of the team when they first met (he was, after all wearing U.S. Ski team gear) they鈥檝e kept in touch.

鈥淎nd with that connection is why I think TIME asked me to write the piece. They give you the option between doing an interview and having a TIME writer write the piece, or doing it yourself and I said, I have to do this, and make it perfect and meaningful,鈥 adding 鈥淚f he reads this, I want him to cry.鈥

Mikaela Shiffrin Just Became the Greatest Ski Racer of All Time

On February 19, 1989, Sweden鈥檚 Ingemar Stenmark won his 86th World Cup race鈥攁 giant slalom in Aspen, fewer than 100 miles from Edwards, Colorado, the hometown of American skier Mikaela Shiffrin. Thirty-four years later, in a strange twist of ski-racing serendipity, Mikaela Shiffrin surpassed Stenmark鈥檚 World Cup win record in 脜re, Sweden鈥擲tenmark鈥檚 home country.

Displaying her unshakeable balance, Shiffrin won her 87th World Cup race, a slalom at the 脜re World Cup on Saturday, March 11. Fittingly, it was one of her best slalom performances ever, with a winning margin of almost a full second (0.92) over Switzerland鈥檚 Wendy Holdener.

鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty hard to comprehend,鈥 Shiffrin told TV viewers immediately after the race and shortly after hugging her brother Taylor during the podium celebration. 鈥淢y brother and sister-in-law are here, and I didn鈥檛 know they were coming, so that makes it super special.鈥

Shiffrin鈥檚 ski racing talent is rooted in her upbringing, in part, trying to keep up with older brother Taylor on the slopes. She both cried and laughed at his surprise visit in 脜re and said she could not wait to celebrate her record-breaking day with Taylor, his wife Kristi, and her mom.

鈥淚 can鈥檛 put a name with the numbers,鈥 Shiffrin said later. 鈥淚 don鈥檛 know how to define that. When you have these special moments, like being on the podium with Paula Moltzan in Semmering, seeing my brother and Kristi and my mom in the finish today鈥攖hat鈥檚 what makes it memorable. I鈥檓 so proud of the skiing I did both runs today and so proud of the team this whole season. Every step of the way, being strong and focused and positive and having the right goals and helping me manage my own focus and distractions. It鈥檚 been incredible to be part of that. I鈥檓 just really thankful.鈥

Watch: Shiffrin’s journey to victory #87

Video loading...

It was Shiffrin鈥檚 13th World Cup win this season and 53rd World Cup slalom victory (six of which came this season). It鈥檚 the second most races she has won in a single season (she won 17 races in 2019), with three more World Cups on her calendar next week.

The winning stats do not end there. Shiffrin also clinched her second World Cup giant slalom overall title on Friday鈥攁n accomplishment that made her even happier than winning the GS race itself. She learned that she had won the title before she skied her second run of GS.

鈥淚f you asked me in the start gate, 鈥榃ould you prefer to get this victory or to win the [giant slalom] globe, you get one, but you don’t get both, what would you choose?,鈥 I would choose the globe,鈥 Shiffrin said. 鈥淭hen I was like, 鈥極kay, got that already, now I can push a little bit.鈥欌

鈥淭hen you come into the finish like, 鈥業 can’t believe that all of that happened today,鈥 it’s a little too much to comprehend,鈥 she added

Shiffrin and her supporters celebrate the victory. (Photo: Jonas Ericsson/Agence Zoom / Getty Images)

The GS globe, she added, is a symbol of consistency throughout a season鈥攕omething she covets more than single race wins.

With her 20th giant slalom win, Shiffrin tied Vreni Schneider鈥檚 women鈥檚 GS-win record鈥攁 record that had stood for 30 years. Shiffrin has won six giant slaloms this season, tying Schneider鈥檚 best season (six GS wins in 1989, the same year she won 14 World Cups鈥攁 record that Shiffrin smashed in 2019 with 17 World Cup wins). Shiffrin has one GS left on her schedule at World Cup Finals next week.

But the world wasn鈥檛 comparing Shiffrin to Schneider鈥攖hey were stacking her up against Stenmark. It took Stenmark just over 14 seasons to win 86 World Cups; Shiffrin just over ten. Shiffrin hit the mark at age 27, while Stenmark was 32. Shiffrin鈥檚 87 wins have come in every alpine discipline; Stenmark鈥檚 in just two: slalom and GS.

Shiffrin has won 53 World Cup slaloms, 20 GS races, five super-G events, three downhills, one alpine combined, and five parallel races to get to 87. Stenmark won 46 slaloms and 40 giant slaloms.

Of note: throughout most of Stenmark鈥檚 career, super-G was not yet a discipline, and there were fewer World Cups on the schedule. For example, in 1979 (the year Stenmark won his most World Cup races), there were 33 men鈥檚 World Cup events, 13 of which were downhills or combined races鈥攎eaning Stenmark competed in 20 World Cups (he won 13).

By comparison, in 2019鈥攖he season Shiffrin won a record 17 World Cup races鈥攖here were 35 women鈥檚 World Cups, with Shiffrin competing in 26 of them across five disciplines.

鈥淪he鈥檚 much better than I was, you cannot compare,鈥 Stenmark told the Associated Press in February. 鈥淪he has everything. She has good physical strength, she has good technique, a strong head. I think it鈥檚 the combination of everything that makes her so good.鈥

鈥淎nd I鈥檓 also impressed that she can ski good in slalom and in super-G and downhill also,鈥 he added. 鈥淚 could never have been so good in all disciplines.鈥

But Shiffrin would take nothing away from the Stenmark.

鈥淣o matter what I do, if I achieve 86 or 87, or whatever number I achieve, it doesn’t change anything about what Stenmark accomplished,鈥 she explained after tying Stenmark鈥檚 record. 鈥淚t’s a really, really cool number. It’s wild, but for me, consistency and progression throughout the season has always been my biggest goal.鈥

Stenmark was not in 脜re to watch the World Cup races. He did not want to take the attention away from Swedish skiers, four of whom made the flip in this weekend鈥檚 slalom and GS, with Olympic champion Sara Hector landing on the podium in third in Friday鈥檚 GS and Anna Svenn Larsson taking third in slalom on Saturday.

In a TV interview after the GS, Shiffrin was invited to say something to Stenmark who was watching from afar.

鈥淣o matter what I do, it doesn’t ever compare to what you achieved,鈥 she said. 鈥淢aybe I get the 87th victory. Maybe not. But for me the biggest dream is to be mentioned in the same sentence as you.鈥

鈥淲ho you are and who you already were as a ski racer and what you achieved as a human, that’s been the most inspiring thing,鈥 she added.

Beyond her affiliation with Stenmark and his homeland, the fact that Shiffrin tied the World Cup win record in 脜re also holds meaning. It was the site of her first World Cup win back in December 2012. It was also the site of her first, and so far only, major injury鈥攚hen she hurt her knee back in 2016 and missed a couple of months of World Cup racing. And in 2020, Shiffrin was slated to race in 脜re, her first race back after her father tragically died, until the pandemic shut down the world.

Shiffrin does not believe in destiny, but she does believe in 鈥渟ome level of karma or some kind of forces beyond our control that sway how things happen.鈥

鈥淔or whatever reason, it seemed destined to get at 86 here in Sweden,鈥 she said after she had had time to process her GS win. 鈥淚’ve really experienced it all and felt it all in 脜re, and for this to happen today, here, it feels somehow like that karma sway has been involved a little bit.鈥

While all eyes were on Shiffrin, the light also shown on her U.S. teammates. In slalom, finished just off the podium in fourth鈥. She accomplished this feat only a few weeks after having surgery on her left hand.

Moltzan broke her hand a month ago when the U.S. won the world title in the team parallel event. She returned to the U.S., had surgery in Vail, Colorado, and returned to racing with three plates and 25 screws in her hand. She only had one day of slalom training before the races in 脜re.

With a 15th place finish in GS on Friday, moved up high enough in the rankings to qualify for World Cup Finals鈥攋ust over a year after her devastating crash in Beijing.

World Cup Finals begin on Wednesday in Soldeu, Andorra, with men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 downhill. Shiffrin is planning on racing the super-G on Thursday, then GS, and slalom next weekend. She already has the sewn up, so Finals will be a celebration of sorts of her historic season.

Mikaela Shiffrin Just Split from Her Longtime Coach

For Mikaela Shiffrin, it seems major competitions are the time to make big decisions about her coaching team. The U.S. Ski Team today announced that Shiffrin is parting ways with longtime coach Mike Day, who鈥檚 been by her side throughout her , including on February 8, when she won silver in the FIS World Championship super-G.

The coaching change went into effect immediately, with Day reportedly making his way back to the U.S. after learning about the decision.

鈥淢ikaela wants to do something different going forward,鈥 U.S. Alpine director Patrick Riml told on Wednesday. 鈥淎nd she informed Mike and Mike decided to go home. It鈥檚 a shock for me that he took off.鈥

According to reports, Shiffrin informed Day that she planned to take a new direction with her staff at the end of the season.

鈥淎fter working with Mike Day for seven seasons, I鈥檝e decided to move forward with new leadership on my team for the next phase of my career,鈥 Shiffrin said in a statement released by the U.S. Ski Team. 鈥淚 want to thank Mike and acknowledge all of his work and dedication over the last several years.鈥

It鈥檚 not the first time Shiffrin has made significant changes to her coaching staff mid-season. Last year, she dismissed longtime coach and trainer Jeff Lackie just three weeks before she was set to compete in the Beijing Olympics. Lackie had been a member of Shiffrin鈥檚 coaching staff for six years.

Shiffrin has not yet shared what new direction she鈥檚 taking with her staff, or who will replace Day as head coach. Team Shiffrin still includes her mother, Eileen Shiffrin, as well as assistant coach Mark Mitter, who joined her staff at the start of this season. Shiffrin, the superstar on the U.S. Ski Team, has always had her own personal coaching staff that operates separately from the larger U.S. Ski Team and its discipline-specific coaching teams and athletes.

Shiffrin will now continue her World Championship run in Courchevel-Meribel, France, without Day, competing in the women鈥檚 giant slalom on February 16 followed by the slalom on February 18. Winning both events鈥攈er specialities鈥攚ould mean ending this World Championships, which has been punctuated by both highs and lows, on a positive note.

Shiffrin got off to a shaky start in France after , an event she was expected to win. Then she dismissed speculation that she was on track for a by grabbing silver in the super-G just two days after her disqualification.

But on the heels of that race, Shiffrin was targeted by a small protest from environmentalists who believed, mistakenly, that she was traveling by helicopter between her off-site training base in Orcieres, only a 40-minute drive from the World Championship venues in Courchevel. That rumor spread at the same time that Shiffrin鈥檚 name was attached to the open letter sent by more than 300 professional skiers .

Needless to say, it鈥檚 been a rollercoaster of a World Championship for Team Shiffrin.

Mikaela Shiffrin Had a Rocky Start at the Alpine Ski World Championships

Mikaela Shiffrin may be in the midst of another record-breaking season, but that doesn鈥檛 mean she doesn鈥檛 still have bad days. In Monday鈥檚 opening race of the 2023 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Courchevel-Meribel, France, Shiffrin failed to finish the slalom portion of the alpine combined鈥攁n event where she is the reigning world champion.

The world championships kicked off Monday and run through Sunday, February 19.

Shiffrin was sitting in sixth place after the super-G component of today鈥檚 alpine combined, 0.96 seconds out from the leading pace set by Italy鈥檚 . Then in the slalom鈥攈er speciality discipline鈥擲hiffrin was posting the fastest split times before she straddled the third-to-last gate, causing her to ski out of the course and be disqualified.

The shocking moment harkened back to the Beijing Olympics, when . It鈥檚 even more surprising given the record-breaking run Shiffrin is currently on. She鈥檚 won 11 World Cup races this season, finished first or on the podium of her last four races, and just two weeks ago surpassed Lindsey Vonn鈥檚 win record to become .

鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 happen very often,鈥 Shiffrin admitted after the race. 鈥淚 felt like I was skiing really well. I had a really good run.鈥

Shiffrin knew that to overcome Brignone鈥檚 lead from the super-G, she鈥檇 have to ski 鈥渇ull, full gas.鈥

鈥淪o I was doing that, take the risk that you don鈥檛 finish,鈥 Shiffrin continued. 鈥淭his is what you have to do if you want to earn a medal at the world championships. On the end, it was like letting it go to the finish just one gate too soon and then you鈥檙e out.鈥

Brignone, , ultimately went on to win today鈥檚 alpine combined, with Switzerland鈥檚 Wendy Holdener finishing second and Austria鈥檚 Ricarda Haaser in third. Isabella Wright was the only American to finish both portions of today鈥檚 race, landing in 13th overall.

It鈥檚 undoubtedly not the start to her World Championships Shiffrin was looking for, but as she heads into her next race, a super-G on Feb. 8, she鈥檚 focused on the good skiing she did today, not on the one mistake she made.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always quite positive how I was skiing,鈥 said Shiffrin. 鈥淚 have some work to do to figure out where I can make up some time in the super-G. It鈥檚 so much fun to ski this hill so I鈥檓 looking forward to it.鈥

Kronplatz, literally, means 鈥淐oronation Place鈥 and today, in Kronplatz, Italy, for the Queen of Skiing, it was exactly that. Here, under perfect conditions on the steepest giant slalom of the World Cup tour, Mikaela Shiffrin scored her 83rd World Cup victory. In doing so she passed Lindsey Vonn as the winningest woman in skiing history.听听

Shiffrin doesn鈥檛 like the term 鈥渂reaking records.鈥 She prefers 鈥渞esetting鈥 records. On Tuesday, she made a smashing reset. Now only Sweden鈥檚 Ingemar Stenmark, with 86 wins, stands in front of her in all-time World Cup wins.

鈥淏reaking sort of insinuates that something鈥檚 been lost,鈥 Shiffrin said leading into these races. 鈥淲hat other athletes have done before you is not something that can be broken. I much prefer resetting records, because it actually shows that it鈥檚 building off of something else.鈥

Shiffrin accomplished today鈥檚 task in what has been her style this year, winning both runs of the day over a field stacked with talent. Women鈥檚 GS has emerged as the most competitive field in World Cup racing, featuring ten women with victories in the event.

鈥淭he level is pretty incredible,鈥 said Shiffrin. 鈥淭o be a part of this competition you have to be pushing on the limit 鈥 and then if you make one mistake, if it鈥檚 a big enough mistake, you鈥檙e off the podium, maybe out of fifth position, tenth position, so you have to be taking the risks and sometimes it鈥檚 going to be good, and sometimes it鈥檚 not.鈥 Shiffrin, who started her career by dominating in slalom, now seems to be doing the same in GS. This season alone she has won four of the seven GS races, all after leading the first run.

Also Read:

Tuesday鈥檚 podium was nearly identical to the last GS, in Kranska Gora, Slovenia, with Shiffrin again on top. This time, Lara Gut-Behrami and Italy鈥檚 Federica Brignone switched places, ending the day in second and third听respectively.听

鈥淚 was a bit nervous for the second run but mostly I hate waiting,鈥 said Shiffrin. 鈥淔inally when it was time to go, everything went quiet and I just pushed as hard as I could every turn.鈥澨

Tuesday鈥檚 races fall in the middle of a grueling seven-race stretch spanning two weekends and four events. It started with two downhills and a Super G in Cortina last weekend, stops in Kronplatz for two GS鈥檚 and then will move on to Spindleruv Mlyn in the Czech Republic for two slaloms.

Shiffrin is one of few tech athletes who race all events. She sees speed as a reset for her mind. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a different kind of challenge. It鈥檚 a place where I know I can win, but I don鈥檛 expect to win ever.鈥 On one hand, racing speed creates a grueling schedule and takes away from training time in tech.听 On the other hand, speed events are opportunities to gain valuable points towards the overall title, while also building a comfort and hunger for speed that transfers to more aggressive GS skiing. On Tuesday, the gamble paid off.听听

The first run was set by Shiffrin鈥檚 coach, Mike Day, and sought to capitalize on the racer鈥檚 recent time on speed skis. Running fourth, Shiffrin took a direct, confident line, finishing in 58.72, just .13 ahead of Switzerland鈥檚 Lara Gut Behrami, who notched top-five finishes in all three speed events in Cortina. Italy鈥檚 Federica Brignone was close behind in third, comfortably ahead of Shiffrin鈥檚 chief Slalom rival Petra Vlhova. American Paula Moltzan charged from 12th to finish fifth.

That set the stage for a tightly contested second run, set by Vlhova鈥檚 coach Mauro Pini. American Nina O鈥橞rien, tied for 29th, kicked it off with a scorching run that would move her up to 18th in the final standings. Moltzan spun around and tumbled on the final pitch and did not finish. Vlhova held her spot and was edged out by Brignone. Then came Gut-Behrami, taking the lead by nearly one second, making the point that these victories, no matter how many you have in your pocket, are not easy.听听

As the last racer at the start, Shiffrin watched. 鈥淚 was thinking, 鈥榳hy did I watch?鈥 I can鈥檛 go that fast. I was a little bit wild in some spots, but it felt so clean and I thought I wouldn鈥檛 be faster but I could maybe be close.鈥 Shiffrin crossed the line .45 ahead of Gut-Behrami and skied herself solidly into the history books.

In the finish, Gut-Behrami could only smile and raise her hands in acceptance. Today, like so many days before it, Shiffrin was just too good to catch.听听

It seems the only person who was surprised was Shiffrin herself. 鈥83. It was almost completely out of my mind today, like we鈥檙e just restarting the season from square one. I guess it鈥檚 very fitting that it would come in the moment when I actually am thinking about it the least and don鈥檛 expect it at all.鈥

Shiffrin鈥檚 83 victories, starting in December 2012,听 have come across all six Alpine disciplines. She holds the record for slalom victories (52) and her 18 career Giant Slalom victories are second only to Swiss great Vreni Schneider鈥檚 20. Shiffrin has done it all by age 27 and in just 237 starts. As commentator Steve Porino put it, her 35 percent win rate 鈥渞everberates across all sports.鈥澨

The victory was Shiffrin鈥檚 ninth this season and her fifth in GS. She leads the Overall World Cup Standings with 1,417 Overall points over Lara Gut-Behrami鈥檚 861. Petra Vlhova is in third with 846. Shiffrin also leads the GS and SL standings.听听

Shiffrin struggled at first to put her feelings into words, referring people to the upcoming episode on , where she records her thoughts on the bigger picture, while staying focused on her skiing.

鈥淓very step of the way people tell you you鈥檙e amazing before you鈥檝e done anything,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really hard to stay focused on the right things. I have family and I have my closest friends, my coaches through the years鈥搕hey鈥檝e always been focusing on the proper things, what I believe are the right things to think about in life. And maybe that鈥檚 why I鈥檓 here now and 83 means a lot less to me than how I skied on the mountain.鈥澨

On the awards podium, after the standard Prosecco shower and the medals presentation, Shiffrin bowed to accept one more prize鈥攁 golden crown, placed on her head before the very familiar national anthem played in her honor.

Racing continues in Kronplatz on Wednesday with another GS.

鈥淪imply the Best.鈥 The chorus that played in the finish area of Sunday鈥檚 World Cup giant slalom said it all, as Mikaela Shiffrin clinched her 82nd World Cup victory, tying the record set by American Lindsey Vonn. After her 6th place finish on Saturday, Shiffrin said she鈥檇 need patience to match the record that she started building ten years ago. She had to wait one day.

Shiffrin started the race with bib 1, and never relinquished her lead, winning both runs and taking the victory over Italy鈥檚 Federica Brignone by .77 seconds. Switzerland鈥檚 Lara Gut-Behrami finished 3rd. The ever-composed Shiffrin let out a scream as she crossed the line, then leaned over and put her head in her hands to take in the moment.

鈥淚 was so nervous this run,鈥 Shiffrin said immediately afterwards. 鈥淚 have a rash on my face I was so nervous. I don鈥檛 know why, maybe a little bit was because of 82. I just really wanted to ski well, and I did.鈥

The day started with an even faster course than Saturday鈥檚 screamers. Shiffrin鈥檚 winning time was a full two seconds faster than the winning pace a day earlier. Only Italy鈥檚 Brignone, and Saturday鈥檚 surprise winner, Valerie Grenier of Canada, were within a half-second of Shiffrin.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 ski faster,鈥 Shiffrin said after the run.听 鈥淚 felt much, much better this first run than yesterday. I had to try to change my feeling from yesterday. It was very good skiing and I鈥檓 happy with that.鈥

Conditions on Kranska Gora鈥檚 Podkoren slope appeared to deteriorate more in the warm temperatures Sunday, making for a bumpier ride down the hill that gets no direct sunlight.听 That, combined with a turn-heavy set on the second run course, created especially tough conditions for the top skiers, who ran in reverse order. Several of the women near the top of the order shuffled positions, with Gut-Behrami and Slovakia鈥檚 Petra Vlhova finding a way to smooth out the course and gain ground.

Also Read:

Then came Brignone, in attack mode and taking every risk鈥攁nd the lead. Shiffrin, as she has been in so many races this year, seemed unstoppable, her skis glued to the snow but also finding the fall-line more than on Saturday, and her lead never in doubt. When she came through the finish, winning the race and the run, she not only tied the record but also asserted that the best is yet to come.

鈥淚t was a fight. But it was pretty amazing conditions and I got a report from the coaches and they were like, 鈥業t鈥檚 really attackable, so just go for it,鈥欌 she said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been in this position before and I鈥檝e given it away and today I wanted to fight for it.鈥 Afterwards, Shiffrin noted that her run was among the best she鈥檚 ever skied. 鈥淚 just felt so good with my skiing and that鈥檚 the most special thing.鈥

On the podium, and afterwards in interviews, Shiffrin let the tears flow, noting that it was her father, Jeff, who, before she won her first World Cup, instructed her to memorize the words of the national anthem. 鈥淗e said, 鈥業f you ever win, you鈥檇 better sing it,鈥 so I always think of him when I鈥檓 up there.鈥 On this day, she reflected on her father, who passed away tragically in 2020. 鈥淢ost races these days I鈥檒l think of him and be able to refocus and that鈥檚 been a big improvement for me since last season.鈥

Shiffrin and mother Eileen

Shiffin also noted how exciting it is to be part of the broader success of American skiers, who, despite the challenge of spreading limited resources across such a huge country, manage to find success in this European-dominated sport. 鈥淲hen I look around now at my teammates鈥擯aula, Nina, all of these women鈥攊t makes me realize when you do focus that energy in the right way, actually how many of us can be on the top and it makes the future for me even more exciting than anything our team has accomplished in the past,鈥 she said.听

It was indeed a good day for North Americans, with five making the second run behind Shiffrin. They were led by Saturday鈥檚 unexpected victor, Canada鈥檚 Grenier in 6th. Paula Moltzan bumped up her game and smoothed out the course, finishing 8th. Teammate Nina O鈥橞rien continued her comeback from injury, scoring points in 25th, just behind Canadian Britt Richardson in 24th.

As for the numbers, despite the patience it took, Shiffrin achieved this record with blazing speed. It took Vonn 13 years and 13 major injuries over 395 races. As Vonn told commentator Steve Porino, 鈥淚 literally bled for that record.鈥 Shiffrin, who has had no major injuries, got here in ten years and 233 races.

Vonn had nothing but respect and encouragement for Shiffrin, telling the AP: 鈥淚鈥檓 really happy for Mikaela. Records are meant to be broken and it鈥檚 a sign of progress. And if anyone is to break my record, I鈥檓 really happy that it鈥檚 an American. She鈥檚 going to continue pushing the limits and continue to inspire other Americans. There were a lot of women who paved the way for me. And now it鈥檚 her turn to pave the way for the next generation.鈥

At age 27, and with eight victories in this season alone so far, it appears Shiffrin has much more in the tank. Her 17 GS victories are second only to Vreni Schneider鈥檚 20. Next up to slay is the all-time record of 86 wins by Ingemar Stenmark, though Shiffrin is mindful of keeping the hunt for records from getting in the way of her goals.

If I get there, I hope that I can keep it in my own head in a way that it鈥檚 not a relief to get to 86 because it would be such a shame to feel relieved about 86 victories,鈥 she admitted. 鈥淚 should just celebrate whatever comes for the next races and for the rest of my career because I don鈥檛 want to ruin it with chasing some record that probably shouldn鈥檛 be broken.鈥

Sunday鈥檚 win extended Shiffrin鈥檚 lead in the World Cup standings. With 1,115 points she now leads Vlhova by 419 points, and trails GS leader Marta Bassino by only 25 points.

Shiffrin returns to competition on Tuesday in Flachau, where she has notched four wins.

Five Story Lines to Follow with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team

Mikaela Shiffrin鈥檚 pursuit of history isn鈥檛 the only reason to tune into World Cup skiing this season. New faces on America鈥檚 alpine and cross-country teams are emerging as consistent podium threats鈥攁nd hometown races and new broadcast services make it easier to watch them ascend the rankings. Here鈥檚 how to tune in and what to watch for this competition season:

Mikaela Shiffrin Leads an All-Star U.S. Alpine Team

Having stood atop the World Cup podium 76 times, Shiffrin is only six victories away from tying Lindsey Vonn for the most wins by a female skier. She鈥檚 also only ten wins from tying Ingemar Stenmarks鈥 record of 86, the most victories ever by any skier. In 2019 alone, Shiffrin scored 17 wins, so it鈥檚 certainly possible that she could accomplish both records, which would confirm her, at just 27 years old, as the greatest ski racer ever. Though Shiffrin will garner most of the headlines as she chases those records, it鈥檚 worth keeping an eye on other American skiers. Rookie Ava Sunshine Jemison, who, when she wasn鈥檛 skiing, grew up competing in surf events, finished in the top 30 in her first two World Cup starts (not even Shiffrin accomplished that). On the men鈥檚 side, Vermont鈥檚 Ryan Cochran-Siegle, who won America鈥檚 only medal at last season鈥檚 Olympics (silver in the super G), will compete for the overall title in super G and downhill, and Vail鈥檚 River Radamus, who nearly found the podium in Beijing (fourth in giant slalom), is on track for a tour win in that event. Two skiers coming back from injuries are also worth noting: Breezy Johnson, who got hurt just a few weeks before the Beijing Games, has a chance to win the women鈥檚 overall downhill title. And Tommy Ford, who, during the 2019 season, was in the hunt for the overall Giant Slalom crown before suffering a horrific injury, has already managed a sixth-place finish in this season鈥檚 World Cup opener.

Nordic Stars to Watch

American audiences began noticing just how good U.S. cross-country skiers had become in 2018, when Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall won Olympic gold in the team sprint event. Randall has retired, but Diggins and the rest of the women鈥檚 squad is still racking up victories on the World Cup. Diggins won the overall World Cup title in 2021, making her only the second American to accomplish that feat (Bill Koch won the overall in 1982). Julia Kern and Hailey Swirlbul have both earned podium results. And Rosie Brennan has won multiple World Cup races. In addition, the men鈥檚 team is greatly improved. Vermonter Ben Ogden was 12th in the sprint race at the Beijing Games (the best sprint result at the Olympics by an American man), and Scott Patterson and Zak Ketterson teamed with Brennan and Diggins to win a World Cup mixed relay last season.

New Technology Powers the Stars

If your favorite American ski racers look sharper this season as he or she carves through courses, it might be due to technology that the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team began developing just prior to the pandemic. The tech, called Slope Sense is a monitor attached to skiers鈥 back protectors. Using GPS and IMUs (an electronic device that measures inertia), the team can now detect the forces on a skier鈥檚 body鈥攁t 100 times per second鈥攖hroughout the turn. Using that data, the team has been able to build a proprietary exercise machine that mimics exactly those forces, allowing skiers to get the same sensation of going in and out of gates right in the gym.

The U.S. Becomes a World Cup Destination

For the first time in history, the U.S. will host eight World Cup events. That means there鈥檚 more opportunity than ever to watch your favorite athletes compete. Included in the collection of events are aerial and mogul competitions in Utah and freeski and snowboard competitions in Colorado and California. There are also several alpine ski races, first at Killington Mountain in Vermont (women鈥檚 slalom and giant slalom) in November, then at Beaver Creek, Colorado for men鈥檚 super-G and downhill in December. There鈥檚 also a series at Palisades Tahoe in Lake Tahoe, California (men鈥檚 slalom and giant slalom) in February. But perhaps the most exciting news is that World Cup racing will return to Aspen, Colorado in March, where the men will take on one of the more iconic tracks for the first time since 2017. Dubbed 鈥淎merica鈥檚 Downhill,鈥 the course is noted for its huge, 100-foot jumps, extreme steeps, and technical turns. If you do make it to Aspen for the race, try getting there early and hike to the bottom of Spring Pitch. There, you鈥檒l be able to see most of Aztec, which includes the steepest section of the course and highest speeds. 鈥淭o be able to hold the lead and dominate on home snow felt like defending the honor of American skiing,鈥 AJ Kitt, an American downhiller, once wrote. 鈥淚 felt the whole country on my shoulders鈥攊n a good way.鈥

New Ways to Watch

Through a new partnership with the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team, 国产吃瓜黑料+ is streaming .听NBC platforms will also broadcast 19 hours of coverage of domestic World Cup events across their platforms, including live and tape-delayed coverage on NBC, CNBC, and Peacock. Skiandsnowboard.live will stream events abroad (a season鈥檚 pass costs $16), except for events held in Austria. There鈥檚 a complicated story behind Austria鈥檚 broadcast rights to World Cup events, but they have struck a deal this year with NBC. So, to watch the Hahnenkamm, Flachau, and Stubai races, you鈥檒l need a Peacock subscription.

鈥淭hank you Levi!鈥 Mikaela Shiffrin鈥檚 words from atop the podium in Finland summed up what was a spectacular weekend for the American skier. in as many days, kicking off her 2022-23 campaign with a perfect score of 200 series points.

Shiffrin鈥檚 49th slalom victory breaks her own record for wins in a single event, and brings her total World Cup victory tally to 76 (just six shy of Lindsey Vonn鈥檚 82 and ten short of Ingemar Stenmark鈥檚 all-time record of 86). For as much as it could in the four-ish hours of Lappland daylight, the sun shone on Shiffrin who won both runs of the day in a tightly contested race. Switzerland鈥檚 Wendy Holdener unleashed a gutsy second run that moved her from fourth place up to second place, just .28 seconds behind Shiffrin. As she did on Saturday, Slovakia鈥檚 landed on the podium, in third.

鈥淭wo races in a row like this is a really big effort,鈥 said Shiffrin, 鈥渟o I am just really happy.鈥

While the weekend sweep is an ideal way to start the season, Shiffrin acknowledged that the moments of success, while special, were also fleeting. 鈥淓ven after 12 years [on the World Cup], I鈥檝e realized I am never going to feel like 鈥業 am there鈥. Now I am ok with that,鈥 she said.

The double victory marks a return to dominance for Shiffrin after her disappointing campaign at the 2022 Winter Olympics, where she left without earning a medal in the five events she entered. Shiffrin, the most dominant slalom skier ever, about the pressure she felt during the Games鈥攕he came into the Olympics after enduring a season altered by injuries. Her setback continued the ongoing discussion about at the Olympics.

Shiffrin showed her resilience after the Olympics by winning a World Cup Downhill in march and securing the series overall title in slalom. Still, her dominance in Levi marks her first double victory since the Games.

The strong start also shifts the balance of power in the ongoing slalom rivalry between Shiffrin and Vlhova. The two, both 27, have dominated the event in recent years, despite following very different pathways to the top. Shiffrin鈥檚 first victory came in December 2012, at age 16. She won the World Cup Slalom title that season and Olympic slalom gold the following season in Sochi 2014. Vlhova, by contrast, won her first World Cup in 2015. By 2019 she was second to Shiffrin in the overall slalom standings. She took the slalom title in 2020 and the World Cup overall title in 2021. Then, at the 2022 Olympics, while , Vlhova finally scored Olympic gold.

In Levi, success brings a skier a prized reindeer, the award since 2013 to each race鈥檚 victor. To put the pair鈥檚 dominance in perspective, only one woman other than Shiffrin or Vlhova鈥擳ina Maze in 2014鈥攈as won a reindeer. Heading into the weekend, Vlhova had five, and Shiffrin four. After today, Shiffrin now has a herd of six.

Going into today鈥檚 second run, Shiffrin held a slim .07-second lead over Germany鈥檚 Lena Duerr, but admitted that if she was going to bet on anyone on the second run, including herself, it would have been the steely-nerved Vlhova. It was Holdener鈥檚 second run, however, that seemed untouchable. It was, by everyone except Shiffrin. 鈥淚 just tried to push really hard. I was actually really surprised,鈥 said Shiffrin. 鈥淪he鈥檚 so strong,鈥 said Shiffrin of Holdener. 鈥淚 love to race with her. She鈥檚 pushed my limit.鈥

Holdener, who is still in search of her first slalom victory, claimed her 15th runner-up position in the event.

Three more of the seven Americans at the start鈥, Ava Sunshine and Katie Hensien鈥攍anded in the top 30 to qualify for a second run.

It turned out to be another day of heartbreak for Moltzan, who straddled on her first run yesterday. Moltzan finished 12th on the first run and was leading by more than .7 seconds on the second run when she caught a gate and fell hard.

Related:

The second run saw the young Americans come out strong but encounter trouble on the swingy turns of the lower steep. Ultimately, they skied to finish to score World Cup points awarded to the top 30. For Hensien, in her 18th World Cup slalom start, it was her third time in the points. For Sunshine, it was her second time in the points in as many tries. The two finished 26th and 27th respectively.

Sunshine, 20, once again qualified for the second run, this time in 23rd place. Katie Hensien started with bib 58 and completed the first run in 29th position.
