17 Father’s Day Gift Ideas for Active, Outdoorsy Dads

Dads are notoriously hard to buy gifts for. They’re usually not great about communicating what they want, and anything they know they want they just buy for themselves when the urge strikes. To help those scratching their heads about what to get dad for Father’s Day, we badgered the dads at ��ԹϺ�� to tell us what’s on their wish list, great gifts they’ve received and really appreciated, and dad essentials they swear by.

If the dad in your life isn’t into “stuff,” consider non-physical gifts like race entries, Airbnb credits for weekend getaways, or activity punch cards. After all, what outdoorsy dads likely want most for Father’s day is to spend the day doing what they love, whether that’s going for a bike ride, a trail run, or hitting the links (especially if they can share their passion with their kids).

I’ve tested a variety of recovery slides and sandals, but the Kane Revive shoes are one of my top picks for how versatile they are. Outerknown Apex Evolution Boardshorts��

The Apex has been one of my favorite boardshorts for years now, so I was pleased when a heavily updated version, the Apex Evolution, debuted a couple of months ago. While the original Apex was a damn-near perfect boardie, the shorts’ stretchy fabric—though thin, soft, and lightweight—wasn’t the most durable.

The new Evolution isn’t quite as light or soft, but the new fabric, a four-way stretch material sourced from retired fishing nets, is much more rugged. An updated cut also makes it easier to sit comfortably while waiting for waves. Veteran parents know there’s no such thing as one stroller to rule them all. Active families who are always on the go likely need a compact travel stroller, a jogging stroller, and some sort of gear hauler. We have all three, but these days, the Veer All-Terrain Cruiser is getting more use than the others. thanks to its versatility and packability.

Unlike many other wagons out there, you can push the Veer like a traditional stroller, which is a really nice feature when you’re conveying a heavy load of kiddos and gear. It also has burly wheels that make it easy to navigate off the beaten path. But my favorite feature of this wagon is how compact it is.

Unfolded, it seats two children on built-in benches, or it can seat a toddler and accommodate an infant car seat with the appropriate adapter. I used to own expensive sunglasses that I’d baby—always putting them away in their case to make sure the lenses wouldn’t get scratched. That went out the window when I had kids. Now, I reach for these durable and affordable Goodr sunnies. The polarized lenses still offer pretty good optical clarity for the price, but I especially like the grippy, lightweight frame that stays put on your face and on top of your head. Plus, the sporty-meets-stylish single-lens design makes these versatile enough for bike rides, hikes, and ski après sessions. Nomadix Changing Poncho

I grew up in Germany, so I have no qualms about changing in public after hikes, bike rides, or even swim sessions (not to brag, but I’ve even mastered the difficult art of changing swimsuits without cover and without exposing myself). But changing ponchos like this one from Nomadix certainly make things easier.

This one is made from 90-percent post-consumer recycled polyester, and is oh-so-soft to the touch, highly absorbent, and quick-drying. It has some weight to it, which makes it feel like you’re enveloped in a towel when you’re wearing it. I love the cinchable hood and kangaroo pocket—small details that make a big difference on windy beach days and when you’re carrying the kids’ odds and ends on top of your own.

Even better: Nomadix now makes this changing poncho for kids (one size for 3–6 year-olds and one for 6–12 year-olds), so you can buy a matching set for mom and her mini-mes. I’m 5’5” and 140 pounds, and the size M/L fits me with plenty of room to spare. Now I just have to wait for my 2-year-old to grow into his.

The selling point of these shorts for moms is in the name: pocket jogger. I think I can speak for all moms when I say that pants without pockets just don’t fly. And these shorts—which come in 5.25-inch, 7-inch, and 8.25-inch inseam lengths—boast a whopping five pockets. That means mom can carry her phone, keys, chapstick, sunscreen stick, credit cards, and emergency snack without having to carry an extra bag or purse.

I’ve been wearing the 7-inch Pocket Jogger all day, every day for almost a month (with a few days off here and there to launder them). Made from a mix of spandex and nylon, they’re highly compressive, have a snug waistband that prevents them from gradually working their way down the butt (as some spandex shorts and leggings do), and are simple yet stylish enough to serve as bonafide workout shorts or errand-running attire.

Cotopaxi Cubo Packing Travel Bundle

I was slow to adopt the packing cube travel hack, but since having kids, I’m all-in. There’s just no other way to keep all the small kid items—tiny pairs of socks, bibs, medicine, toys—organized and easily findable when you’re traveling with the family. There are lots of options out there, but Cotopaxi’s Cubo Packing Travel Bundle is a nice gift set because it includes three colorful cubes of different sizes (2L, 3L, 10L).

Each features a wrap-around zipper, carrying handle, and mesh sides for breathability. Some people prefer all-mesh packing cubes so they can easily see what’s inside, but I actually like those made with some solid fabric because they hide the mess within, and the fabric gives the cube a little more structure. These nylon-polyester cubes (made from Cotopaxi’s textile scraps) are also easy to wipe clean and throw in the wash.

Thule Urban Glide 3 Double Stroller

I loved our original Thule Urban Glide stroller so much that we upgraded to the Urban Glide 3 Double stroller last fall when we had our second kiddo. This updated double stroller includes all the same features I loved about the original—smooth steering, an easy and responsive handbrake, simple folding/unfolding, large tires and suspension system that easily navigate uneven and rough terrain, a generous storage basket, and a front wheel that can be locked for jogging—but in a stroller that seats two.

It also includes some notable upgrades, like extended canopies (still with peek-a-boo windows) to provide more weather protection, extendable leg rests (great for short little baby legs), and an improved brake pedal design that’s more comfortable to engage with sandals on.

I originally hemmed and hawed over getting a side-by-side double stroller versus a front/rear double model; I was afraid a side-by-side beast like this one wouldn’t fit on some sidewalks or in the trunk of our car. But we haven’t found a sidewalk or path yet that isn’t wide enough for the Thule Urban Glide 3 Double, and it seamlessly fits into the trunk of our SUV when folded up (though without much room to spare).

Duer Performance Denim Lite Harbour Pant

For months after having each of my kids, I shunned denim; I didn’t want to wear anything as constricting, stiff, or uncomfortable as jeans. But these denim pants from Duer are not your average “jeans.” Made from a mix of cotton, polyester, and elastane, the Performance Denim Lite Harbour pants are as light, stretchy, and comfortable as a pair of thin, cotton sweatpants.

The cut is also equal parts relaxed and stylish, with a high-rise, drawstring waist, relaxed hip and thigh cut, and tapered leg. The best part about these pants: They’re flattering despite having a more relaxed cut, and they don’t sag in the butt like some other pants made from lightweight materials. These have become my go-to pants, even as temperatures rise into the 80s in my home of Boulder, Colorado, because they’re just so dang airy, comfortable, and versatile. Fit note: These run large, so I recommend sizing down.

Olukai Kawela

Every mom needs a pair of slip-on sneakers like the Kawela. Technically, these shoes were designed for golf, but I love them for everyday wear. The sporty look and drop-in heel make the Kawela super versatile and convenient, and the lightweight materials, stiff sole, and stellar traction make them ideal for sandy playground sessions with the kids, biking into town for coffee with girlfriends, and even casual hikes. Bonus: They’re water-resistant, so you can play around creeks and ponds without worrying about getting your feet soaked. A note on fit: I find that Olukai shoes tend to run small and narrow, so I size up half a size.

Alternative to buying slip-on sneakers: Turn her favorite pair of sneakers into slip-on shoes with elastic shoe laces. My husband replaced the traditional laces on my go-to sneakers with these as a Christmas present last year, and they’ve made my life so much easier. This is a brilliant gift idea for moms who spend 20-plus minutes wrestling their kids into shoes and jackets but have no time to properly tie their shoes before having to run out the door because they’re late—again.

Last-Minute Gifts from a Bad Uncle

It’s less than a week until Christmas. If you’re anything like me—a childlike adult living kid-free—that means you might have just enough time to��get a gift to your nieces, nephews, and friends’ offspring sometime before January.

Two years ago, I wrote a piece explaining my program of purchasing��children the most dangerous, parent-annoying knives, motorcycles, and archery gear possible. But since then, I’ve had something of an epiphany: If I don’t cause lost fingers, bloody noses, or extensive damage to homes and vehicles, those parents will actually let me spend time with their kids. And that can be fun, especially if those kids are set up to enjoy the same activities you do.

Through experience with my own nephew Roscoe, who I’m pretty sure is about 12��and lives in rural France, plus a varied assortment of other kids with parents I like, here’s how I go about setting them up for success outdoors.

1. Determine the Kid’s Current Age

Children often change ages at irregular, unpredictable moments. And, in some circumstances, they may even grow and change clothing sizes. Determining where those numbers currently lie is the key to successfully buying the right gifts.

When in doubt (read: is all the time), you can ask the parents or grandparents for their kiddo’s ages and sizes. If questions like “How old is Penelope again?” will ignite a contentious conversation over the irregularity of your visits, then you can simply look inside their jackets or shoes, which may be hanging in a mudroom. Last year’s receipts, likely buried somewhere in your spam folder, are also a good source of clues.

Not all items are appropriate for all ages. For example, a pocket knife that may be a good choice��for a nine-year old could seem lame to a 13-year old. And, buying clothing in a larger size than currently fits the child in question may allow them to enjoy that item for longer.

Last year, I flew��to France to visit my family. And rather than stab in the dark at my nephew’s current sizes or interests, I simply borrowed him one day, and took him to an outdoors store for a shopping spree. There, he was able to make his own mistakes purchasing clothing, absolving me from my sister’s judgement. I did make sure to buy him a new pocket knife on the way out the door,��though. The biggest, scariest looking one seemed like an appropriate choice.

2. Decide Which Interests You Want a Child to Develop

Hanging out with kids can be pretty boring if they don’t enjoy the same activities you do, or if they’re bad at them. So equipping kids with the��skills necessary to keep up can make it way cooler to spend time with them.

When he was ten, I took my friend’s kid Russell on his first camping trip. Wildlife watching is one of my favorite activities and I want Russell to be able to enjoy it too. So, I got him a ($195). Not only are monoculars more affordable than binoculars, but they’re also more robust, lighter, and easier to use.

Kids will be bad at your favorite hobbies before you bully them into getting good, so it’s a good idea to reduce their potential points of failure and barriers to enjoyment. Not only can Russell now enjoy watching the coyotes, rabbits, and hawks in his backyard, but when I eventually put him in front of a wolf or grizzly bear, he’ll know how to operate his scope and won’t need to ask annoying questions.

3. Buy a Toy You’ll Enjoy, Too

Often, social obligations dictate that your relationship with a niece, nephew, or friend’s kid doesn’t stop with the act of giving a gift. You may be expected to help the human child assemble, learn to use, or practice with whatever you bought them. Choosing something that you will enjoy playing with,��too,��is a great way to avoid boredom or worse: having your expansive knowledge of how all things work called into question.

This year, I got Roscoe a model truck from ($89), a new toy brand based in Bozeman, Montana, that uses advanced CNC automation and 3D printing techniques to make high-performance gravity vehicles. Not only does the box say “12+” on it, which I’m pretty sure aligns with my nephew’s current age, it has 273 parts to assemble. That sounds like enough time to drink at least two beers, and after we complete the truck we’ll be able to send the thing off sweet jumps while I explain how suspension works. Since I enjoy both beer and suspension lectures, I’m setting myself up for the most enjoyable afternoon possible. And he may also get something out of our day.

4. When in Doubt, Try an Activity

After that shopping spree last year, I took Roscoe to a climbing gym in a nearby town. Not only did this require no gift wrapping, planning, or shipping, but it also gave me the chance to be better at something than a small child. It turns out that your nieces and nephews actually like hanging out with their uncles and aunts, and spending time with the little ones can be fun for you, too.

A few years ago, veteran product designer Delian Scudder discovered a treasure trove of deadstock kevlar-reinforced nylon laminate fabric originally meant for high-end sailcloth. He bought a stack and set about hand-stitching duffel bags, totes, and pouches from it. Scudder’s bags are as light, strong, and distinct as they come. The best holiday gifts often fit in two main categories. The first category is: “A gift that makes my everyday routine that much better. “ The second goes something like: “This is a gift I’d never splurge on, so it’s amazing that I received it from someone else.” With those parameters in mind, we reached out far and wide to find gifts both big and small, expensive and affordable, and obvious and unexpected. A team of six testers put well over 100 products through their paces, and after weeks of testing and comparing, we came up with the final list.

For example, one of the products that made the cut under the “everyday routine” category was the Suunto Race S watch in our fitness category. Running tester Meg Healy loved how it was the perfect training watch that kept her motivated and updated all week long, no matter the length of her workout. Lead tester Jakob Schiller flew all over the country (Alaska, California, Seattle) with the Mystery Ranch Mission Rover 45 pack and was always impressed with how it was perfectly sized for a three-day trip, easily fit in an overhead compartment, and was comfortable to wear while schlepping through airports.

Presents that fell into the “I’d never buy this myself category” included things like Sonos Ace headphones and Howl propane campfire in the tech category. The headphones, which are as much as a car payment, seem excessive, but you understand the appeal once you hear how they truly enrich every piece of music, from John Coltrane to Taylor Swift to Cypress Hill. A $1,300 gas campfire seems absolutely ridiculous until you stand next to one on a chilly fall night and realize that this new piece of technology is actually as warm as a campfire (if not warmer) and does a great job setting the vibe after dark.

He’s opened so many cardboard boxes he could start his own recycling facility, and his garage, as you might suspect, is a mess.
