The Best and Worst Outdoor Advice Our Fathers Have Ever Given Us

When I was a little kid, I worshipped my dad. He was bigger and stronger than听I was, and much better at catching tiny lizards. So, naturally, I took everything he said as absolute gospel, and happily followed him wherever he went鈥攚hether that was under tangles of rhododendron, through knee-deep mud, or a little too far out into the lake. Much of the time, I had no choice; I was sitting on his shoulders or holding his hand. Where he went, I went. And as long as he was there, I knew nothing could go wrong.

It wasn’t until I got older that I realized what many of us do: Our parents aren’t infallible beings. And their guidance certainly isn’t always right.

Dads seem to beparticularly good at cultivating early hero worship. They pontificate and share even dubious advice with such utter confidence that their children go on to parrot the same facts for years after.

For example: It wasn’t until my teens that I learned that earthworms do not, in fact, survive if you split them with a garden shovel by accident.听Or that egg-crate foam isn’t peak sleeping pad technology. Or that you probably shouldn’t try to nurse a baby squirrel back to health in a shoebox if you find it under a tree outside. (The squirrel’s name was Orville. For a second there, he was my dad’s best friend.)

Many of us at听国产吃瓜黑料听got started in the outdoors with guidance from our parents. We owe to them our mountain sense, our survival skills鈥攁nd many an early misadventure. All of it has turned us into the explorers we are today.

In honors of Father’s Day, we’ve rounded up some of the most memorable advice our dads have ever given us鈥攂oth good and bad.

Our Dads鈥 Best Advice

鈥淲ear a helmet when you go rock climbing. Your mother and I have invested a lot of money in the contents of your brain, and we鈥檇 hate to see it smeared on the side of a rock.”
– Bob, father of Corey Buhay, interim managing editor

鈥淒on鈥檛 walk straight uphill鈥攝igzag your way to the top. And don鈥檛 eat yellow snow.鈥
– John, father of Frederick Dreier, articles editor

鈥淣ever get between a mom and a baby anything when hiking/camping, unless you want to die. Nothing can be cute in the wilderness.”
– Calvin, father of Emilee Coblentz, packages editor

鈥淔ollow me!鈥 This advice landed me in more tree wells, sketchy climbs, and over-my-head mountain bike trails than I could count, but ultimately turned me into the outdoorswoman I am today.
– Vince, father of Mikaela Ruland, National Park Trips editor-in-chief

鈥淎lways look at where you鈥檙e headed. You should always know what鈥檚 going on at least 50 to 100 feet in front of you so that you can anticipate what might be coming your way.鈥
– James, father of Ayana Underwood, senior health editor

“Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.” This advice led to some overpacking鈥攍ike carrying a down jacket in the desert in July鈥攂ut growing up in the Colorado Rockies, where the weather can flip fast, it was the right call. And not just for the outdoors. That mindset applies to all aspects of my life: being overprepared gives you the freedom to stay loose, be flexible, and go where the wind blows you.
– father of Sierra Shafer, editorial director, lifestyle

And Their Worst Advice

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 need to wear a head net around the beehive鈥攖hey鈥檒l stop stinging as soon as they get to know you.鈥
– Bob, father of Corey Buhay, interim managing editor

鈥淩ain fly? We don鈥檛 need the rain fly.鈥
– John, father of Frederick Dreier, articles editor

鈥淧ack light. Eat bugs for protein.鈥
– Calvin, father of Emilee Coblentz, packages editor

鈥淚f you don鈥檛 have lighter fluid, you can just put some gasoline in your fire pit.鈥
– James, father of Ayana Underwood, senior health editor

The 15 Best Father鈥檚 Day Deals on Outdoor Gear

Father鈥檚 Day is just around the corner. To celebrate all of the rad dads out there, our gear team pulled together these Father鈥檚 Day deals that make buying the perfect gift a breeze. Picks range from relatively affordable alpaca socks to pricier (albeit discounted) top-of-the-line smartwatches. In between, you鈥檒l find rooftop tents from Yakima, trekking poles from Leki, and discounts on Arc’teryx gear.

While these deals are all quite different, they do have a few things in common. First off, we know dad would be stoked to unwrap any of these on June 15th. And each and every one has been approved and hand-picked by our gear team.

Garmin鈥檚 having a huge Father鈥檚 Day sale right now, and you can currently save up to $200 on smartwatches, GPS navigators, satellite communicators, golf accessories, you name it. Check out the , or keep reading for a few of our top picks.

(Photo: Courtesy Garmin)

The F膿nix 8, Garmin鈥檚 most feature-packed, high-performance, sports-oriented smartwatch, is exceptionally versatile. You may already be familiar with the critically acclaimed F膿nix Solar (was $1,000+, now $800+), which, as the name implies, gets a battery boost from the sun. There鈥檚 also the F膿nix E (was $800, now $600), a streamlined option at a more tolerable price point. As of late, though, we鈥檝e been testing and loving the F膿nix 8 AMOLED version, which features an incredibly crisp and detailed touchscreen.

The F膿nix is packed with features like sleep tracking, GPS mapping, smart notifications, a new voice-activated assistant and voice memo capabilities, a handy flashlight, and downloadable music and Bluetooth connectivity so you can listen to jams on runs without lugging your phone. It also comes pre-loaded with an editable avalanche of activities to choose from that go beyond the standard swim, bike, and run. Not to mention, the eighth edition of this watch is also more waterproof, durable, and dive-ready than ever, making it a dream watch for multi-sport adventurers.

One of the biggest gripes Garmin fans have had regarding the updated F膿nix line is price: The larger, 51-millimeter models will cost you $1,200. That said, Garmin鈥檚 biggest dollar-per-dollar discounts during this Father鈥檚 Day sale are on the F膿nix lineup, and you can now save $200 on the entire line, making it a great time to snag one of these killer smartwatches (for dad, or for yourself).

Let鈥檚 be honest here. Gifting a satellite communicator like the Garmin InReach Mini 2 for Father鈥檚 Day isn鈥檛 entirely altruistic, as it provides loved ones with priceless peace of mind whenever dad heads into the wilderness. This lightweight, compact device allows users to send text messages to check in with friends and family, transmit GPS coordinates, or hit an SOS button in a worst-case scenario. For many 国产吃瓜黑料 team members, the InReach Mini 2 is a critical piece of gear they won鈥檛 leave the trailhead without, especially on longer solo adventures and overnights.

Garmin鈥檚 Forerunner 165 Music is a top pick for runners and triathletes who want baseline smartwatch features, training insights, music capabilities, and a streamlined package at a much more affordable price. For reference, the 165 retails for a third of the price of the F膿nix (depending on the exact model), and it鈥檚 now slashed by $50. In fact, the Forerunner 165 Music rose to the top of the heap of our annual watch testing, earning the 鈥渂est for a budget鈥 superlative. If you鈥檙e looking for bang for your buck, this one鈥檚 for you.

socks on white background

If the dad on your list is a hiker who could use a sock drawer refresh, check out this Paka gift box. It features a trio of cozy, cushioned, mid-cut socks, each in a different earthy colorway and all crafted from an alpaca fiber blend. Not only is buying a gift box a way to give his sock drawer a quick refresh, buying in a pack of three will save you some hard-earned cash.

Imagine a Venn diagram. In one circle, you have whiskey aficionados and beer drinkers. In the other, you have outdoor enthusiasts. Smack-dab in the middle of that heavily overlapping Venn diagram is North Drinkware, a boutique crafter of cups from the Pacific Northwest. These cups aren鈥檛 ordinary, mind you, but instead feature famous mountains sculpted into the base of each glass, resulting in some serious inspo with each sip.

If you鈥檙e shopping for a dad who loves his whiskey, the tumblers or heavy-bottom tumblers are the way to go. Cerveza fans will be blown away by the pint glasses. In either case, the thick glass holds cold well, so you can pre-chill glasses to your heart鈥檚 content.

Even cooler than a pre-chilled vessel, however, is the fact that you can shop by mountain range to make the gift customized to the recipient. Check out pre-packaged gift sets that celebrate mountains from Colorado to Hokkaido. Or, for an even more customized gift, build your own box set and pull together a set of glasses featuring mountains that mean something to dad.

Whatever you do, don鈥檛 forget to use the code DADTEN for up to 40 percent off before Father鈥檚 Day.

Chirp is having a hefty , with recovery rollers and wheels up to 67 percent off. The RPM, short for Rolling Percussive Massager, is one of our favorite Chirp recovery tools, and it鈥檚 currently on sale for 20 percent off. An electric, rotating, knobby rolling pin designed to massage tired muscles and work out post-workout kinks, the RPM is a great gift for dads who say 鈥渁ge is just a number鈥 on the ski slopes and 鈥渙uch鈥攃ouch鈥 when they return home. You can use it to roll out everything from biceps and triceps to glutes and quads. Our personal favorite? Slotting it in the included stand and letting it work wonders on tired feet.

pizza oven on white background

For the dad who is serious about pizza, there are few better ovens for at-home use than the Roccbox from Gozney. It鈥檚 a smaller version of the brand鈥檚 commercial pizza ovens, so restaurant-quality pizza is just a few 500掳 seconds away.

It鈥檚 a versatile beast of a pizza oven, providing home pizzaiolos with the option to cook with gas or wood. The box is covered with a silicone jacket that reduces the risk of burns (though it can still burn you, so be careful), and has removable legs and burner that make packing it up a breeze. Right now you can pick it up for $100 less than usual, which is a nothing-to-sniff-at discount of 20%

If dad is an outdoors multihyphenate, he needs a hard-wearing waterproof jacket that does everything. This is where the Beta AR from Arc鈥檛eryx comes in. A lightweight-yet-durable shell designed for mountain adventures of all types, we love this jacket for climbing, hiking, camping, running, mountaineering, and any other alpine activities you can think of.

The jacket leverages Gore-Tex Pro tech for waterproofing, has pit zips to keep things cool when temperatures rise, and has two pockets on the front and one inside for small bits of gear. If he鈥檚 on a climb, scramble, or sketchy approach, have no fear: the stormproof hood is helmet compatible.

Arc鈥檛eryx鈥檚 trail running shoes are not to be slept on. The Sylan Pro is the brand鈥檚 most plush running shoe offering, making it ideal for tackling long trail runs or hikes where comfort is paramount. A rocker midsole provides an easy footfall that propels the wearer forward with each step and the 28mm stack height ensures there is plenty of foam underfoot.

The Sylan Pros are very comfortable, but they鈥檙e also designed for protection. The integrated knit collar keeps rocks and scree from finding its way into the shoes and polyurethane-coated upper keeps the foot protected from bigger rocks and roots. Finally, the 6mm lugs and Vibram sole give Dad the confidence he needs on ascents, descents and everywhere in between.

power station on white background
(Photo: Courtesy Jackery)

Don鈥檛 let Dad get caught without power. The Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 is the perfect companion for a car camping trip or glamping adventure, delivering 1500W of AC and 100W of USB-C power that charges听 phones, lights, or the fancy espresso machine that he won鈥檛 leave home without.

There are six output ports that pull from 1070Wh of power, charging an iPhone 74 times, a laptop 14 times, or a Starlink for 10 hours on one full charge. This is plenty for keeping a bustling campsite going for days on end, meaning the adventure never has to stop (at least, until the real world starts calling).

Leki has taken the trail running, hiking, and skiing to the next level with its innovative poles, which are highlighted by the brand鈥檚 Shark system, which uses integrated gloves to provide leverage and power transmission going up and downhill. The Cross Trail 3s are ideal for hiking, backpacking, or trail running, giving dad an extra couple of points of contact with the ground when things get tricky.

They come in a couple of different sizes and pack down small for easy storage, whether he鈥檚 packing them away at home or in his pack during a runnable descent. Heat-treated aluminum shafts are ultra tough and lightweight, and the tips have an interchangeable basket system that lets him adapt to the conditions for the best possible support.

In our opinion, Rab is seriously slept on when it comes to the best brands in the outdoor biz. The British brand makes exceptional mountain gear, from its apparel to bags and beyond. The Positron down jacket is the perfect companion for all seasons, from skiing or hiking in the winter to cold summer mornings high in the mountains.

A Pertex Quantum Pro shell staves off light rain and wind, while lofty 800-fill down keeps him toasty warm without any excess weight. The adjustable hood fits over a helmet, and wrist and hem adjusters make it easy to keep wind from making its way into the jacket. Summer is always a great time to pick up a warm down jacket, since most brands take this as an opportunity to flash some significant markdowns.

If he loves a pocket knife but doesn鈥檛 want something that feels like it belongs strapped to a Navy SEAL, the James Brand Carter is a top choice. The brand makes great knives and EDC, using high-quality VG-10 stainless steel to make the Carter鈥檚 blade and G10 fiberglass laminate for the handle.

Not only does it perform, it just looks cool. The thumb disc on top of the blade stands out for its design, but is also an immensely useful feature, allowing him to flip the knife into position with ease. The reversible pocket clip will let him stow the knife anywhere he wants, and the trusty slide lock mechanism is intuitive and reliable. These things rarely go on sale, so this is a great chance to save yourself more than $20 while also snagging a great gift.

rooftop tent on car on white background
(Photo: Courtesy Yakima)

A rooftop tent is every guy鈥檚 dream. It proves his outdoor bonafides when he drives around town with it folded up, and looks even cooler when it鈥檚 splayed fully open at the campsite. Yakima makes some of the best you can buy, indeed, the SkyRise has been one of our favorites since it was first launched in 2016.

The 3-person tent provides an ample footprint for comfortable sleep at night while doubling as an awning that鈥檚 perfect for hanging out under with a deck of cards and a drink at the end of a long day on the trail, lake, or wherever his car camping adventures take him. The best feature, however, is probably the 2.5-inch wall-to-wall mattress pad that will have him drifting off into the most peaceful sleep of his life. We never see these at this steep of a discount, so if he鈥檚 had his eye on a rooftop tent, now is the time to surprise him with one.

Every dad needs a Leatherman 鈥 it鈥檚 pretty much a requirement at this point. The Wave Plus is one of the most versatile multi-tools you can buy, packing 18 different tools into its small frame. It has needle-nose and regular pliers, wire/hard-wire cutters, an electrical crimper, a wire stripper, a 420HC knife, serrated knife and saw, and others.

The multi-tool provides Dad with anything he needs to get the job done at home, at camp, or in the backcountry. Plus, it comes with the signature nylon sheath with snap closure, just like the ones your dad鈥檚 dad and your dad鈥檚 dad鈥檚 dad had in their toolbox.

17 Father's Day Gift Ideas for Active, Outdoorsy Dads

Dads are notoriously hard to buy gifts for. They鈥檙e usually not great about communicating what they want, and anything they know they want they just buy for themselves when the urge strikes. To help those scratching their heads about what to get dad for Father鈥檚 Day, we badgered the dads at 国产吃瓜黑料 to tell us what鈥檚 on their wish list, great gifts they鈥檝e received and really appreciated, and dad essentials they swear by.

If the dad in your life isn鈥檛 into 鈥渟tuff,鈥 consider non-physical gifts like race entries, Airbnb credits for weekend getaways, or activity punch cards. After all, what outdoorsy dads likely want most for Father鈥檚 day is to spend the day doing what they love, whether that鈥檚 going for a bike ride, a trail run, or hitting the links (especially if they can share their passion with their kids).

If all else fails, you can never go wrong with a pair of socks.

Free Fly Pinnacle Rash Guard in cream color

Free Fly Pinnacle Rash Guard

As a dad, I spend a lot of time outside (watching a variety of sporting events, dragging kids on hikes, etc.) so I鈥檝e come to love Free Fly鈥檚 line of hooded sun shirts, which I wear almost constantly through summer. I was excited when they released the Pinnacle, a hooded rash guard that takes the sun shirt concept and applies it to water-based activities. It has chafe-free seams, and a built-in visor in the hood to help protect your face from the sun. I鈥檝e already worn it on paddle board trips on the French Broad River near my home, and I can鈥檛 wait to break it out during our annual family surf trip later in the summer. Just be sure to order a size up鈥攖he Pinnacle is tight fitting and gets tighter when it鈥檚 wet, so give yourself a little extra breathing room. Graham Averill, 国产吃瓜黑料 gear and travel columnist听

Lumi HD Smart Projector

Lumi HD Smart Projector

Movie night is a staple in our house, and the addition of the Lumi HD Smart Projector means we can take our favorite media outside, whether I鈥檓 throwing up binge-worthy shows in the backyard or screening horror films at the campsite. The projector weighs under 3 pounds, and has wifi and built-in apps (from Prime to Netflix), so you can log into your streaming account and watch your favorite shows and movies on the big screen.

Or use the HDMI or USB ports to play content from your phone, streaming stick, or GoPro. It shoots a clear 1080P HD picture up to 200 inches big, and is Bluetooth compatible so you can hook up an auxiliary speaker if you want big sound. It doesn鈥檛 have its own battery, but it works well with portable systems like the Goal Zero 500. Add the 100鈥 roll up screen ($19), which is easy to hang in front of your garage door, or from the roof rack on your car. G.A.

Hydro Flask 12oz Cooler Cup blue

Hydro Flask 12oz Cooler Cup

The HydroFlask 12oz Cooler Cup is my go-to beverage holder whether I’m in the backyard, at a concert in the park, or floating on an inflatable unicorn at the lake. The removable silicone bottom locks in a 12-ounce beverage can or bottle, and if you invest in a lid, the cup pulls triple duty as a coffee mug in the morning and a wine or marg holder at night. Just give it a quick wash and nobody鈥檚 the wiser. 鈥擱yan Dionne, 国产吃瓜黑料 digital video producer

Igloo ECOCOOL Latitude 52-Qt Cooler
(Photo: Courtesy Igloo)

Igloo ECOCOOL Latitude 52-Qt Cooler

The ECOCOOL Latitude 52-Qt cooler proves that there is still space for a low-tech cooler in a market dominated by $400 options. For $60, the ECOCOOL keeps snacks and drinks reliably cold for weekend camping trips. It’s also solidly built, with sturdy plastic handles that don’t bend under 50-pound loads and robust clasps and hinges to secure the lid. As a bonus, the ECOCOOL is made from post-consumer recycled resin. While it won鈥檛 keep contents cold for as long as some of the more premium coolers out there, it鈥檚 a good value compromise. 鈥擩oe Jackson, 国产吃瓜黑料 gear columnist

Gregory Alpaca Gear box stuffed with outdoor gear

Gregory Alpaca Gear Garage Envy听

If there鈥檚 a dad on your list who needs to organize the garage or implement order to a chaotic gear closet, give a gift that might nudge him in the right direction. Gregory鈥檚 brawny Alpaca Gear Box 45L is perfect for both at-home organization and hauling camp supplies on the road. It features dual-sided hinges, allowing you to open it from either side or remove the lid entirely. The lid is see-through, too, so you can easily take stock of the contents. Last but not least, a gasket seal helps keep your gear dry and dust-free at camp.

I’ve been testing the Gear Box for a couple of years now on van life adventures and car camping trips. I’ve even used it to tame a (hypocritically) messy gear room. In that time, I鈥檝e definitely thought to myself, 鈥淗uh, we could use another four or five of these.鈥 Enter the aptly named 鈥淕arage Envy鈥 bundle鈥攁 collection of six of these mighty gear tubs. That adds up to 270 liters of packable volume. Just imagine the possibilities. (If one or two tubs is enough for you, .) Drew Zieff, 国产吃瓜黑料 gear contributor

Big Agnes Big Six Armchair
(Photo: Courtesy Big Agnes)

Big Agnes Big Six Armchair

The Big Six Armchair beats other camp chairs out there because it checks all the boxes: it鈥檚 comfortable, stable, and very packable for a high-backed chair. Credit the 20-inch seat height, generous 20-inch back height, and the high-tenacity Robic nylon upper that stretches tightly against six connection points on the chair to provide firm upper back support. Bonus: the two-piece, sub-four-pound chair packs down small enough to fit into a 25-liter daypack. This would be a great chair even if it never left camp, but the beauty of the Big Six is that you can easily pack it up and hike short distances with it. 鈥擩.闯.

Kane Revive Active Recovery Shoe

I鈥檝e tested a variety of recovery slides and sandals, but the Kane Revive shoes are one of my top picks for how versatile they are. While the footbed texture and smooth ride make them feel like a recovery shoe, plentiful heel support and a more streamlined silhouette make them my favorite for running errands and pretending to be the Loch Ness Monster at my kid鈥檚 playground without worrying about rolling my ankle. I highly recommend this shoe for active dads who have grown tired of using a lacrosse ball to treat their aching feet. 鈥擩.闯.

Simple Modern Kona Travel Mug with Locking Flip Lid for Father's Day gift

Simple Modern Kona Travel Mug with Locking Flip Lid

When I’m heading out for a long drive (with my son or going to visit my son), I like nothing better than a cup of hot coffee to sip on as the miles go by. What I don’t like is when it goes cold in 15 minutes and I’m left drinking a tepid, tasteless brew, or I spill it getting it to the vehicle, or I have to wrestle with a travel mug that’s too big or requires two hands to open. The Kona Travel Mug with Locking Flip Lid solves all these issues.

It’s seriously leak-proof when closed (I’ve turned it upside-down and not spilled a drop), the lid flips open with vigor at the push of a button, it’s just the right size (16 ounces, or a Starbucks 听grande)听for my three-shot, mocha pot-brewed “au lait” and it fits securely in about any cup holder as well as in my hand. Best of all, it keeps my coffee hot for hours鈥攗p to eight hours, according to the 国产吃瓜黑料 Lab, and for six hours even when out in 39 degree weather. Jonathan Beverly, 国产吃瓜黑料 senior gear editor

Minus 33 Lightweight Algonquin Men's T-Shirt Crew for Father's Day gift
(Photo: 101 Degrees West)

Minus 33 Lightweight Algonquin Men’s T-Shirt Crew

As their name suggests, Minus 33 apparel is usually associated with frigid outings. But this lightweight short sleeve is ideal for high-output activities on cooler summer days, and for casual wear at any temps. Given the uber-soft feel and classy drape of the 100-percent merino jersey knit, I tend to reach for it first when I want to look good and feel comfortable in social settings, but have been impressed with its wicking, dry-time, and mobility on runs and hikes as well. And its odor-resistance is unparalleled: I wore it for three consecutive days on a road trip, then for a morning run on the fourth day, and it still smelled so fresh I felt funny putting it in the laundry. It also has proved more durable than other all-merino fabric, holding its new-like shape and texture after multiple washes. Comfortable, stylish, and low-maintenance鈥攚hat dad wouldn’t want that? 鈥擩.B.听

Insta360 Ace Pro 2

Insta 360 Ace Pro 2 Action Camera

GoPro and DJI have long dominated the action camera market, but Insta360 is making its mark with the Ace Pro 2. Co-engineered with Leica, the camera shoots ultra high-resolution footage, rich 4K slow-mo, and captures high-quality audio. It also has a laundry list of amazing features, including a dedicated chip to help with low-light shooting, a back screen that flips up for great selfie footage, and industry-leading stabilization. The total package makes it nearly impossible to shoot bad footage. If the dad in your life likes to shoot footie of his biking, skiing, or overlanding adventures, he鈥檒l love this camera. 42 Birds Cork Lightweight Yoga Mat And Massage Balls Bundle听

This Cork Yoga Mat from 42 Birds is a game-changer for yoga and home workout routines. Not only does the cushioned cork material grip well under sweaty hands and feet, but it鈥檚 also more sustainably sourced than conventional mat materials and free of harmful chemicals and compounds. Regardless, the tactile experience during a downward dog is downright lovely, to the point I won鈥檛 be returning to rubber anytime soon. This bundle comes with three cork-wrapped, fascia-blasting massage balls (two are the size of tennis balls, the other closer to a cherry tomato). Whether the dad on your list is a greenhorn yogi or a seasoned guru, this gift will have him saying 鈥渘amaste.鈥 鈥挤.窜.

Ombraz Viale sunglasses
(: Courtesy Ombraz)

Ombraz Viale Sunglasses听

If you鈥檙e unfamiliar with Ombraz鈥檚 armless sunglasses, they ditch the otherwise standard-issue, breakage-prone folding arms you see on every other pair of shades on the market. Instead, the shades utilize adjustable cords to cinch the sunglasses in place, resulting in a tighter, customizable fit that won鈥檛 fall off or snap mid-adventure. When you鈥檙e not wearing the shades, the cord acts like a retention strap, keeping the Ombraz safely around the neck and reducing the chances of losing your precious sunnies.

I’ve been testing the Viale this spring and digging it. It sports a gently curved, rounded frame, with a classic, notched keyhole nose bridge. The model offers outdoor dads both exceptional style and enough performance for hiking, camping, and daily life. Inset in the claimed 鈥渋ndestructible鈥 frame are top-tier polarized lenses from Zeiss, one of the sunglasses industry鈥檚 biggest names, and Ombraz鈥檚 optics are unsurprisingly solid. 鈥挤.窜.

Monument Grills Eminence 405

Searching for that perfect Father鈥檚 Day gift? Level up dad鈥檚 outdoor cooking game with the heavy-duty, high-end Eminence 405 from Monument Grills. The ClearView庐️ lid makes it easy to see inside without lifting the lid, and everything from temperature and propane gas capacity to alerts and timer settings sync from the touch-panel LED screen right to the app. With side searing station, this smart grill brings the heat.

Coleman 8-Person Darkroom Skydome

Coleman 8-Person Darkroom Skydome Tent

The Darkroom Skydome is a no-brainer for families who car camp. At $230, this eight-person tent costs less than half what other popular eight-person tents cost (like The North Face Wawona 8 and Big Agnes Bunk House 8). It also uses light-blocking fabric to keep the interior darker (and cooler) during the day, making it a great option for families with little kids who still take naps. Its massive interior (12鈥 by 9鈥) mean there鈥檚 also plenty of room for plush camping mattresses, pack-n-plays, and other family gear. 鈥擩.闯.

Nestout Power Bank in beige

Nestout Power Bank 15000mAh听

Nestout鈥檚 Power Bank 15000 mAh looks a bit like a military canteen, and it鈥檚 as tough as one, too. The portable power source鈥檚 lithium battery is wrapped in a shock-absorbent liner, which is then encased in an overbuilt hard shell. Sealed screw top caps protect the input and output ports, resulting in a dust-, water-, and adventure-proof device. The bank features two USB-A ports and a faster USB-C PD port, so you can charge up your outdoor tech as quickly as possible. From empty, the Power Bank charges up in three and a half hours, and can charge an average smartphone three or four times before it needs to be topped up again. As if that weren鈥檛 enough, the bank boasts an integrated tripod mount and is compatible with Nestout鈥檚 line of camp lights. This is a gift that will be used day in and day out, especially for frequent travelers, outdoor photographers, and digital nomads. 鈥挤.窜.

Kids Ride Shotgun Seat

Kids Ride Shotgun Seat

My wife and I learned early on that my daughter was not a big fan of long outdoor activities. The one outdoor activity she would tolerate, I eventually discovered, was bike rides with the Kids Ride Shotgun bicycle seat. My wife bought me the basic Shotgun seat attachment when my daughter was two-and-a-half, and the apparatus quickly revolutionized our relationship with the outdoors.

My daughter had a short tolerance for bike rides in the rear third-wheel seat, but came alive when she was allowed to sit up front. She could see the road, path, and trail ahead, and the fresh perspective produced a love of bike rides. Suddenly, biking became our favorite father-daughter activity. My daughter is almost five now, and she’s added a few inches since we got the seat, but she still fits on the bike (just barely). Frederick Dreier, 国产吃瓜黑料 Articles Editor

Grey Paka Trail Socks

Paka Trail Socks

Unwrapping a fresh pair of socks for Father鈥檚 Day will never get old, and that鈥檚 especially true when it comes to these Paka Trail Socks. I’ve been loving everything I鈥檝e tested from Peru-based Paka over the last year or two. As the brand name suggests, Paka focuses on the magic of the alpaca fiber, a lightweight yet resilient material with natural quick-drying, temperature-managing, and odor-combating properties. 鈥挤.窜.

Men's boardshorts with wavy print
(Photo: Courtesy Outerknown)

Outerknown Apex Evolution Boardshorts听

The Apex has been one of my favorite boardshorts for years now, so I was pleased when a heavily updated version, the Apex Evolution, debuted a couple of months ago. While the original Apex was a damn-near perfect boardie, the shorts’ stretchy fabric鈥攖hough thin, soft, and lightweight鈥攚asn’t the most durable.

The new Evolution isn鈥檛 quite as light or soft, but the new fabric, a four-way stretch material sourced from retired fishing nets, is much more rugged. An updated cut also makes it easier to sit comfortably while waiting for waves. The gusseted fly is less revealing than that of the previous model, and the braided drawcord and broad waistband ensure a comfortable, secure fit in heavy surf. Long story (board)short, if it鈥檚 good enough for Kelly Slater, it鈥檚 good enough for the wave-chasing dad on your list. 鈥挤.窜.

We Asked Our Dads About the Oldest Gear They Still Use

Like many of our readers, we were fortunate enough to grow up with outdoorsy dads who helped guide us toward a lifelong love of playing outside. We took the time to call up our dads (hint, hint) to give them some love and chat with them about their favorite moments outside. Many of them are still rocking gear from their first excursions outdoors, and we thought we’d share some of our dads’ favorite pieces of outdoor gear that they still use to this day. We suggest you ring them up and do the same, you never know what gems live in your dad’s head鈥攐r his garage. To all the dads out there, happy Father’s Day!

鈥擳he Editors

father's day

I got this Osprey fanny pack in the 鈥70s. I have鈥攓uick count鈥攕ix other fanny packs around the house right now. I have used all of them. And then I come back to the Osprey one. Others are better for more urban things, and work well as slings as well as on my hips. But if I want to use a fanny pack vs a backpack, and I often do since I sweat less that way and prefer to carry things on my hips rather than shoulders, this remains the one I usually turn to for a hike, like I did in Santa Fe this past week; like I did when we went fishing in northern New Mexico two summers back.

Most fanny packs these days are too small to carry what I want, or too flimsy in the way they can be tightened to the back and hips. This one has water bottle bags where the elastic has worn and the holders sag by this point. But it can carry 10L (just a guess) and has a design that lets you slip clothes or extra soft stuff between the main compartment and the front small compartment (for sunblock, toothpicks, etc). It鈥檚 wonderfully ugly by now, but it still works. I have lighter ones, I have a heavier one, I have a slightly larger, less used version of this one but this is the one I come back to. I bought it when it first came out, from Down Works here in Santa Cruz (where Osprey packs began, and run by people involved with the packs when all of them were UC Santa Cruz students). They used a cinching system when they first started that still is about the best I鈥檝e seen. I鈥檝e used the pack for walks here in Pogonip often, on trips, hiking, and it鈥檚 still great. It does the job. 鈥擯aul Skenazy, father of features editor Matt Skenazy

A fly box. Silver, brushed aluminum, a sticker on the front showing how to tie fishing knots, green plastic interior with space for 100’s of flies鈥攚et and dry. Still in great shape despite its age and use, even the plastic and the clasp. It was brand new when I got it over 55 years ago as a gift from my father. I suspect it was a birthday gift, but he may have given it to me prior to a fishing trip.

The box is used to hold flies and be carried around with you while fishing whether it be in a boat, vest, chest pack, or fanny pack. I am sure I used it soon after I got it although I am not positive where I was. It was either on a local lake such as Lake Cushman or American Lake in Washington State, or in Canada at Decka lake. I was in love with the box as it made me feel like I was a legitimate fly fisherman and I loved the organizational aspect of keeping all my precious flies in one place.

I think in most ways my relationship with the box hasn’t changed, despite having many more fly boxes now. I still love the feel of the brushed aluminum as I open the box; still love the simple utility; love the memories it evokes of two of my favorite people, my dad and my brother, who have both passed away and were my favorite fishing buddies; and marvel how it has stood the test of time. I use the box every year, pretty much every time I go fishing in fresh water. I wouldn’t sell it, which makes it priceless to me. 鈥擜lan Barronian, father of senior editor Abbie Barronian

Father's Day

I bought this Gerry puffy jacket during a ski trip to Salt Lake City back in 1971 or 1972. My previous ski coat, which I鈥檇 had since the mid-sixties, had broken its zipper, and I needed to find a replacement. I forget where I bought it鈥擨 probably got it at the base area shop at Alta. This jacket was a huge upgrade from my previous ski jacket. It鈥檚 down with a nylon skin and the seams are all on the inside鈥攖his was cutting-edge stuff back then. Why do I still have it 53 years later? It still works and it鈥檚 still warm! 鈥擩ohn Dreier, father of articles editor Fred Dreier

It鈥檚 probably a bit trite, but my oldest piece of gear that鈥檚 still a fully functional part of just about everything I do outside has to be the Swiss Army knife my grandma gave me for high school graduation 46 years ago. Its facilitated hundreds of backcountry lunches and minor emergencies over the years, from the Canadian arctic to Morocco. But mostly it keeps the memory of my grandma fresh whenever I pull it out of my pack. 鈥擲teve Brown, father of 国产吃瓜黑料 contributor Meaghen Brown

My Dad Loves Food; Here's What I'm Getting Him for Father's Day

Every year when mid-June rolls around, I see a surplus of Father鈥檚 Day gift guides that boast the latest and greatest grilling tools, lawnmowers, drill bits, and corny mugs reading, 鈥淕o ask Mom.鈥 While those are great for a certain type of man, that鈥檚 simply not my dad.听

My dad likes to cook out occasionally, but he doesn鈥檛 captain his grill with the same fervor as a grill master. And while he enjoys summer burgers and hot dogs, his culinary skills don鈥檛 begin and end behind 鈥極le Reliable, our beat up grill. His role isn鈥檛 simply to monitor the meat at a cookout and make dad jokes while passing out cold beers, but to provide nourishment, adventure, and love.听

Even though he’s not the most skilled chef (sorry, dad) with tons of cooking knowledge, he’s has taught me more about food than anyone else. He’s shown me the rare and beautiful balance of enjoying delicious meals while focusing on the healing, nutritious aspects of food. Not only that, but he practices lifelong learning by constantly improving upon what he knows about nutrition and introducing new foods with such genuine enthusiasm. Best of all, my dad makes cooking the most simplest of meals an experience. To him, taking the time to slowly and carefully chop a bell pepper into near perfect slices is not only a key part of the process, but I can tell he enjoys it. When he’s cooking, he’s cooking. He’s not rushed to get everything onto our plates, almost like he doesn’t want the experience to be over. I think that’s something I’ve learned from him and applied to life in general.

*Sniffle.* Is someone cutting onions? Goodness.

Dad and I
My Dad and I at the annual Shawshank Hustle 7K in Mansfield, OH.

Someone like that is pretty unique and deserves a gift he鈥檒l actually use. Gone are the days of watching him fake excitement over a rubber handle grill brush, underwear with steaks on them, or an apron that says, 鈥淪hhh It鈥檚 Grilling Szn.鈥澨

Matcha whisk
Matcha whisks are used for mix matcha powder so nothing is left clumped on the bottom of the mug. (Photo: Matchaful)

Matchaful Black Bamboo Whisk, $69

My dad is a big matcha guy. He drinks it not only for the caffeine, but for its high antioxidant count, and heart-healthy nutrients. Plus, he loves to take an extra five minutes out of his morning to enjoy the routine of whisking his tea. Matchaful hand-crafts its whisks from Japanese bamboo that is cut, dried for a full month, and shaved down until it has bristles. My dad is the kind of guy who would appreciate the sort of time and effort it took to make a kitchen essential he uses every morning.

Made In Pans
Made In Pans are non stick, heavy gauge aluminum with a stainless-steel base. (Photo: Made In)

Made In Non Stick Frying Pan, $129

In addition to his daily matcha, my dad makes eggs every morning (and whenever the time arises), but his pan is in bad shape. The bottom is scraped, burnt, gouged, and quite frankly, pathetic. He deserves a durable, non-stick frying pan with a stainless steel base, but it鈥檚 something he would never buy for himself.

Holos
Holos is an overnight muesli with ingredients like rolled oats, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, Goji berries, and more.

HOLOS Overnight Muesli, $65.04 for a 12 pack听

After eating a sample of this HOLOS Overnight Muesli 鈥 a blend of rolled oats, seeds, nuts, and dried berries soaked overnight 鈥 my dad was hooked. He was telling everyone and anyone about this muesli. (Which, by the way, is packed with 20 grams of plant-based protein, 13 different vitamins and minerals, and CFU probiotics!) This is a great Father鈥檚 Day gift, as the individual packets are on the pricier side. My dad never splurges on himself, so I鈥檒l do it for him.

Wonder Valley Olive Oil
A blend of Arbequina, Favalosa and Tuscan olives hand-picked from Californian groves. (Photo: Wonder Valley )

Wonder Valley Olive Oil, $36

Rated by New York Magazine as one of the best finishing olive oils on the market, Wonder Valley Olive Oil would be perfect for my dad鈥檚 daily spinach, walnut, and blueberry salad. This is his staple meal, and he always eats it with a slice of whole wheat bread. For those who love olive oils, you know how fun it is to try different varieties. Wonder Valley has been described as buttery, peppery, and dynamic, which sounds like it would be perfect on Dad鈥檚 salad!

Happy Dad
Happy Dad has lower carbonation than the leading seltzer brands with the same simple but tasty flavors. (Photo: Happy Dad )

Happy Dad, $17.99 for a 12 pack

Believe it or not, my dad would often rather have a refreshing seltzer over a beer. In flavors like lemon lime, black cherry, pineapple, and watermelon, Happy Dads are tasty but aren鈥檛 overwhelmingly sweet like other seltzers can be. He鈥檇 love sipping these on the patio while not grilling. Plus, he鈥檇 get a kick out of the name.听

Dual Folding Cell Phone Stand
This phone stand fits the iPhone 14, 13, 12, 11, Pro Xs, Xs Max, and X8. (Photo: Amazon )

Nulaxy Dual Folding Cell Phone Stand, $8.99

Often when my dad is cooking, he tries to multitask by watching a movie, listening to a podcast, or FaceTiming. This often leads to him trying to set the phone up on a flimsy salt shaker or accidentally setting it in a dollop of sour cream, butter, or egg that鈥檚 gotten on the counter. As simple of a gift as this cell phone stand is, he鈥檇 use it all the time鈥攁nd never would his phone be sticky or yolk-covered again.

Pizza stone
Speed Steel gives you the even bake of a wood fired oven, in your home oven. (Photo: Nerd Chef )

Speed Steel Pizza Plate

My dad is the pizza guy. Open his fridge on any given day of the week and you’ll find a package of pizza dough, ICOE (In Case Of Emergency). It’s not just about the taste of the pizza, it’s about the ceremony for him. He’ll set the mood with some music, pull out all the fixings for pizza (脿 la dad means mozzarella cheese, peppers, pepperoni, and black olives) and take his sweet old time placing each ingredient in its place. I swear, he organizes the olives. To meet this decorum, a Speed Steel plate (also called a pizza stone) absorbs heat and retains it the same way a brick oven would. This allows for a crispier crust and even bake.

Saffron
Saffron is generally easy to grow and, when in full bloom, has blue flowers with orange and yellow pistils. (Photo: Eden Brothers)

Saffron Crocus Bulbs, $12.99 for 12 bulbs

My dad loves turmeric because of its benefits and uses it on everything. In the past he’s grown it himself, harvesting the roots and shaving it down into powder. He’d love to grow a different plant like saffron, which has been shown to improve mood (it’s often called the sunshine spice) and contains cancer-fighting properties. Part of the gift is that he gets to expand his cooking experience and not only reap saffron’s nutritional benefits, but enjoy the process of cultivating and watching it grow. Note: While saffron is best planted in the fall, you can also start to grow it in an indoor pot.

国产吃瓜黑料 dad Jacob Moon shares his advice on the most important part of parenting鈥攕pending time together outdoors

When photographer and his wife, , went on their first date, they climbed a mountain together. With snowshoes on and ice axes in hand, they tagged the snowy summit of Mount Superior, outside of Salt Lake City. The Moons discovered they are the best and happiest versions of themselves when they spend a lot of time outside, so that鈥檚 what they did. Since then, their life together has been infused with adventure and far-flung trips.听

Their values didn鈥檛 change when their daughter, Zoey, was born six years ago. After years of working as a travel nurse, with ample stints of time off between gigs, Moon took a job as full-time nurse at a hospital. But he quickly realized the job wasn鈥檛 a fit because it didn鈥檛 allow for his nonnegotiable: the ability to be outside with his family as much as possible. He quit the job and leaned into photography.

The first year of Zoey鈥檚 life on planet Earth was epic鈥攁 camping trip to Jade Lake in Washington at three weeks old, a backpacking trip in Montana, a road trip down the West Coast, and a van trip in New Zealand. She saw the redwoods, the ocean, and tall jagged peaks. Getting out there was less about stunning vistas and picture-perfect landscapes鈥攖hough those certainly didn鈥檛 hurt鈥攁nd more about prioritizing spending time together in nature, away from life鈥檚 distractions.

Essential Gear: Promaster Land Different trips, from the Pacific Northwest鈥檚 rainforests to Alaska鈥檚 glaciers to Utah鈥檚 canyon country, require different gear. But one essential product works everywhere: the . This all-conditions watch is well suited for any adventure you take it on. It鈥檚 durable and scratch-resistant, and it features atomic timekeeping technology that automatically updates the time and date. Powered by Eco-Drive technology, the Promaster Land is a sustainable, battery-free essential for high-speed adventurers. (Photo: Citizen Watch)

鈥淲e wanted to give her the best life that we knew how,鈥 says Moon. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a life outdoors.鈥 Moon didn鈥檛 get hooked on the outdoors himself until he was 26. Even though he鈥檇 long stared at the Wasatch Front and wanted to hike a mountain, none of his friends did outdoorsy things, so he never felt like he had the chance. One day, he decided to go for it. Moon grabbed his dad鈥檚 camera and hiked to the top of Utah鈥檚 Mount Timpanogos by himself. 鈥淔rom there, it seems like everything totally did a 180,鈥 he says. He started spending all his time outside learning new things鈥攊ce climbing, rock climbing, backcountry skiing鈥攁nd loved every minute of it.听

Today, the Moon family spends eight months a year on the road. Zoey loves when the family drives the van down to Baja, where they spend their days splashing in the water, learning to swim, and paddleboarding. She also has a soft spot for slot canyons and the otherworldly sandstone towers in Utah鈥檚 Goblin Valley State Park.

Essential Gear: Promaster Dive A beach vacation in Baja requires a watch that鈥檚 made to play in the water. The is water-resistant up to 200 meters. Plus, it looks great out on ocean adventures and during dinner at a restaurant back on land. The best part? It鈥檚 powered by any light source, so it never needs a battery. (Photo: Citizen Watch)

Zoey learned to crawl in New Zealand. She took her first step in Death Valley. Her first bike ride was on a dry lake bed in Utah. There were a lot of firsts along the way for Moon, too. 鈥淵ou get to experience things again for the first time through her eyes,鈥 he says. 鈥淲hen we took her to the Washington coast, we were like, 鈥楬ere are clouds, here are wildflowers, here鈥檚 a tree, here鈥檚 moss.鈥 It鈥檚 really cool to experience things for the first time and share them with somebody you really love.鈥澨

Essential Gear: Garrison听When exploring the red-clay Utah desert, you can bet on the sun beating down on you. is , which harnesses light and never requires a battery. The Super Titanium case, which is five times harder and 40 percent lighter than stainless steel, stands up to the rough desert sandstone. (Photo: Citizen Watch)

While Moon takes the concept of 鈥渁dventure dad鈥 to the extreme, he believes anyone can tap into the joy he鈥檚 found鈥攁nd he hopes they do. He encourages folks to start small like he did. When he and Natasha took Zoey camping at three weeks old, they brought a 鈥済igantic 12-person tent, massive cots, and massive chairs.鈥 All that gear helped them feel safe and comfortable. It also helped them realize camping wasn鈥檛 that scary and they probably didn鈥檛 need all that stuff the next time they went. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to go that far to have a new experience outdoors,鈥 Moon says. 鈥淕et away from electronics and distractions, and focus on time together.鈥澨

Moon sometimes worries that sharing his grand adventures might make other parents feel like they could never do it, but that鈥檚 not true. 鈥淵ou just have to build up to it. Start simple, go ahead and take everything but the kitchen sink with you, learn how to take care of a kid outdoors, and then move up to bigger adventures,鈥 Moon says. 鈥淭he end goal is just spending uninterrupted time together in whatever fashion.鈥

8 Father鈥檚 Day Splurges for the Dads in Your Life

There are many different types of gifts to get someone on Father鈥檚 Day, but we would argue that the best are those that don鈥檛 just satisfy needs, but those that also indulge wishes with delight. These eight items are sure to upgrade dad鈥檚 outdoor kit鈥攁nd charm him at the same time鈥攚hether he鈥檚 a camper, hiker, angler, forager, paddler, or beach lounger.

Bote Inflatable Hangout Chair Classic ($349)

Bote Inflatable Hangout Chair Classic

Best for Chillers

Like a backyard lounge chair鈥攂ut built for floating鈥攖his inflatable raft combines a rigid deck with a PVC sling that lets Dad kick back in cool, watery comfort. The pivoting back moves between reclined or upright sitting positions, and instead of a recessed cup holder, a magnetic plate secures any metal tumbler or can koozie. And we love that the sturdy D-rings make it easy to tether to a swim platform or other rafts. Bonus: after the session at the lake or seashore, the deflated lounger packs down to cigar-box size so he can take it anywhere.

Best for Wannabe Bartenders

Built tough for campsites and tailgate apr猫s sessions, these drink accessories let mixologists take their show on the road without worrying about breaking their gear. Big enough to hold more than just ice, the double-walled Rambler Beverage Bucket ($150) chills two wine bottles or a six-pack of cans. The stainless steel ($50) keeps gritty fingers out of the cubes and the ($20) keeps concoctions cold in style.

iKamper Apron ($80)

Best for Craftsmen

Help Dad keep his clothes unstained and unscathed with this heavyweight apron, made from scraps of rooftop tent fabric. The waterproof, densely-woven poly-cotton canvas shields against wood chips, wayward hatchets, or greasy bike wrenches. It looks spiffier than your typical kitchen, plus there鈥檚 plenty of room for tools, notebooks, pens, and gloves in the three pockets. You might have a hard time keeping him out of it.

Best for Anglers

For dads who covet handmade bamboo fly rods, we propose this more affordable (yet exquisitely crafted) fiberglass option. Its slow action and delicate feel appeal to anglers who love the old-school stuff (and make it forgiving enough for beginners), yet its newly-engineered S-2 glass delivers superior accuracy and lets experts hit palm-sized targets on technical waters. Thus anglers of varying abilities call this their ticket to bliss on small mountain streams and spring creeks.

Opinel No. 8 Mushroom Knife ($34)

Opinel No. 8 Stainless Steel Mushroom Knife

Best for Foragers

Any pocketknife can harvest mushrooms and other wild edibles, but this handsome tool offers greater practicality and convenience for the dedicated seeker of wild food. The curved blade wraps around stems for cleaner cutting, and the built-in brush (made of boar bristles, the preferred shroom-scrubbing material) lets foragers field-clean their finds with ease and efficiency. We love how the birchwood handle takes on an attractive patina with repeated use. If you really want to go the extra mile, you can have the handle and blade engraved.

Roark Boatman 2.0 Board Shorts ($100)

Roark Boatman 2.0 Boardshorts 17"

Best for All-Day Trunkers

If dad鈥檚 summer uniform is a pair of swim trunks, gift him board shorts that come with a lifetime guarantee: made of ultra-tough Cordura fabric with four-way stretch, the Booatman stand up to rocks, coral, and brush while allowing for full freedom of movement. One zippered pocket holds valuables (and the shorts themselves, when packed), while the 17-inch inseam offers just-right coverage for surfers, anglers, and paddleboarders.

Best for Hunters and Gatherers

This folding saw transforms the tedious chore of cutting wood into a source of self-powered satisfaction. Unlike cheapo blades, this laser-cut piece of Japanese steel features a proprietary tempering process that keeps the metal flexible, yet resistant to dulling (the steel鈥檚 high carbon content preserves sharpness over many uses). It also dispatches bone, making it ideal for game processing as well as campfire-building (it can also be replaced in case of damage). We were impressed with the grip the composite handle afforded us in wet conditions.

NEMO Stargaze Reclining Camp Chair ($300)

Best for Big Rockers

We鈥檒l say it here: this is the most coveted chair in camping, newly updated for easier packing and improved comfort for bigger bodies (the frame鈥檚 vertical posts are now curved to accommodate broad shoulders). Pockets on both sides hold a phone or beverage, and the fabric feels soft and ventilated鈥攏ever sticky. Leaning back into the chair automatically reclines it into 鈥渟targaze鈥 mode, and the swinging hammock design offers rocking-chair relaxation on any surface.
