Get the comfort of a trail runner with the durability of a hiking shoe

First Look: Danner N45

Nothing challenges a shoe like thru-hiking a long trail. On the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, you need the Goldilocks of hiking footwear: comfortable, breathable, lightweight, and durable. If that sounds like a tall order, it鈥檚 because it is, and most thru-hikers compromise by choosing comfort over durability, using trail runners that need to be replaced at least four times on the journey from Mexico to Canada.

But the days of compromising are over. The designers at Danner have come up with the new, a hybrid shoe that marries the breathability, comfort, and lightweight materials of trail running shoes with the durability, stability, and traction of more traditional hiking shoes. The goal was to create an option that鈥檚 more appropriate for a months-long thru-hike, says Yoji Kaneda, a product line manager at Danner.

Featuring ultralight and durable nitrogen-infused EnduroFoam midsoles, the N45 has a high energy return that feels like you鈥檙e walking on air. (Photo: Danner)

Durability

Kaneda says the Danner team studied how various shoes break down in order to make the N45 more durable. They found that on long thru-hikes, other shoes鈥 midsoles lose cushion over time. After that, the rubber outsole begins to deteriorate. With that in mind, designers found the sweet spot for the N45鈥檚 midsole鈥攐ne with high rebound yet more durability compared to the soles used on typical trail running shoes. The midsole foam is also nitrogen-infused supercritical foam, which adds more cushion and rebound than what鈥檚 found in a lot of hiking shoes, so they feel springy despite having a more durable construction.

Eventually the soles will show wear, as even the most durable rubber deteriorates after enough miles. To help remedy this, at the brand鈥檚 factory in Portland, Oregon, extending their life and adding to the shoe鈥檚 sustainability story.

Of course, long-lasting soles won鈥檛 matter if the uppers don鈥檛 hold up. The N45鈥檚 uppers are made with cut- and abrasion-resistant Perspair, a PU-coated nylon thread woven to create a material that is extremely lightweight and breathable yet incredibly durable.

Performance

Traction is also top-notch, thanks to Vibram Traction Lugs, which flex to increase surface area by 50 percent鈥攁nd more surface area means better grip. 鈥溾嬧媁hen I was hiking in Sedona earlier in February, the Vibram Megagrip compound did really well on hot, dry rocks and also on partially snowy forest floors,鈥 Kaneda says.

Comfort

You can鈥檛 have maximum comfort without a great fit, which is why the women鈥檚 version of the N45 is built specifically for the anatomy of a woman鈥檚 foot. That means creating a new last, or foot mold, which requires countless hours of research and design. led to a precision fit for the N45, with a narrower heel and wider forefoot, reflecting how women鈥檚 feet have changed in the modern era. This women-specific fit is also used in the , which is highly breathable and cushioned and retains Danner鈥檚 legendary craftsmanship.

Add it all up, Kaneda says, and with the N45, 鈥測ou get a lightweight hiker that provides more stability, grip, and durability than trail runners while still having the benefit of lightweight, plush cushioning.鈥 Not too hard. Not too soft. Just right.

Why should women put up with ill-fitting, blister-causing boots? They shouldn鈥檛. That鈥檚 why Danner spent three years perfecting Precision Fit鈥攃reating hiking, work, and lifestyle footwear designed specifically for the female foot.

Crafting the Perfect Boots for Women

Since 1932, Danner has been making boots for the trail, work, and life. In that time, the Portland, Oregon鈥揵ased company has earned a reputation for quality, comfort, timeless style, and innovation. But unlike some storied brands, Danner is not resting on its past. As a master of boot design, Danner is committed to using the latest technology and studies to bring the best fits to market. That鈥檚 why the brand spent years researching, testing, and creating 鈥攁 fit that perfectly matches women鈥檚 footwear needs. To learn more about Precision Fit and the diligence that went into its development, we heard from longtime Danner product line manager Pamela Lo.

Precision Fit
Precision Fit aims to provide the best-fitting boots for women. (Photo: Danner)

国产吃瓜黑料: Why was it important to create a boot fit for women?

Pamela Lo: Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and supported with footwear that fits right. Women鈥檚 foot morphology 颈蝉苍鈥檛 the same as men鈥檚. And Danner鈥檚 dedication to developing a true women鈥檚 fit is helping to fill the need for diversified options for use on the trail, at the jobsite, deep in the backcountry, or casually strolling through town. Compared to Danner鈥檚 standard fit boots, the new Precision Fit lasts鈥攖he foot-shaped mold used during footwear manufacturing鈥攈ave a narrower heel, wider forefoot, and a lower height increase from toes to ankle to accommodate the biometrics of women鈥檚 foot shapes.

What boot styles are offered in Precision Fit?

Precision Fit is available in three styles: Inquire (mid and chukka), Jag II, and Sandy Ridge. Get to know each style by clicking on the feature below.

What kind of research went into bringing Precision Fit to life?

Danner spent three years working to bring Precision Fit to life. We conducted numerous fit clinics with women of various ages and backgrounds, worked with renowned last manufacturers in the footwear industry, and gathered significant research and data regarding women’s foot morphology. The information we collected helped us identify the root of women鈥檚 discomfort in standard boot fits, giving us direction for the new fit. Here鈥檚 some of what we learned:

馃ゾ The heel shape in women鈥檚 boots is often too wide, causing friction and blisters.

馃ゾ The toe box in women鈥檚 footwear is often too narrow, which can cause discomfort or injury.

馃ゾ Biometric foot data from more than 40,000 women found that women require a lower height increase from toes to ankle for optimal support.

How did Danner test the Precision Fit styles throughout the design process?

We focused on pressure points across the top-selling women鈥檚 boot styles, including our own, to distinguish the discomfort-causing features and fits across the industry. With our in-house AETREX foot-scanning machine, we were able to capture the accurate foot dimensions of our fit testers and precise pressure-point information. Equipped with detailed information on what women鈥檚 feet need and what was currently available on the market, we got to work. The Danner team went through several iterations of fit testing, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data to adjust fit, before achieving the desired result: Precision Fit.

Precision Fit
Compared to Danner’s standard fit, the new Precision Fit lasts have a narrower heel capture, wider width in the forefoot, and a lower height increase from toes to ankle. (Photo: Danner)

What are the benefits of having a better-fitting boot?

The obvious benefit is comfort, of course, but that鈥檚 not all. Precision Fit also improves stability and support.You鈥檒l notice how your heel feels more secure and the width perfectly hugs your foot鈥攏o heel slipping or foot pinching. The fit accomplishes a locked-in feel while maintaining a spacious toe box. Whether you鈥檙e hiking backcountry trails in the Inquire, working on a jobsite in the Sandy Ridge, or walking to brunch in the Jag II, Precision Fit allows you to go about your day in a boot that feels like an extension of you.

Precision Fit will eventually reach all of Danner鈥檚 different footwear categories, including our hike, work, hunt, military, tactical, lifestyle, and outdoor lines. We are excited to offer women better-fitting boots for all their needs and adventures, giving them the opportunity to go anywhere in comfort.

How connecting with pack animals can help you connect with nature in a deeper way

The Llama Whisperer

For most people, living next to a herd of llamas would be entertaining鈥攑robably a great story for cocktail conversation. For , it became a life-changing experience that revealed a special relationship with the animals and set her on a new career path connecting people with llamas. 鈥淭hese days, many people ache for connection to the land,鈥 Wolf says. 鈥淪uch connections are immensely healing yet can be very difficult to achieve for people who live in the rush of modern urban life. Llamas can provide a secure bridge into the wild鈥攚here walking with llamas eases the soul and heals the mind.鈥 We caught up with Wolf about her packing outfit, Burns Llama Trailblazers, her mission to foster deeper connections with nature, and how help her do it.聽

国产吃瓜黑料: What鈥檚 the mission of Burns Llama Trailblazers?

Lisa Wolf: At , we strive to prepare our llamas for life as working companions for their people. In turn, we train people to interact with their llama as skilled partners.聽

We put our llamas through a rigorous training program beginning the day they are born. By the time our llamas are six months old, they have gained the manageability skills required to be excellent companions. They are then trained to carry loads while working in strings and dealing with challenging obstacles in extreme off-trail conditions in backcountry settings.

That makes our llamas trustworthy and skilled backcountry companions able to facilitate the yearning people have for connection with the land鈥攐ur llamas are excellent teachers. We believe filling that need is essential for dealing with our current environmental crises.聽

What inspired you to become a llama trainer and backcountry guide?

I didn鈥檛 plan this. I was busy refining my artistic skills and hoping to gain gallery representation when I moved into a cabin next to a herd of llamas. My own llamas had been killed by dogs, and I was craving llama companionship. I mentioned to the owner that if she was going to breed llamas, she needed to give them something to do. She said, 鈥淗ave at it.鈥

When she and her business partner purchased their new herd sire, Wahoo, he proved to be an untrained handful that I couldn鈥檛 resist. When Wahoo was fully trained, I took a group of friends on a pack trip to nearby Steens Mountain, and Wahoo led my string of eight pack llamas. Everyone loved it, and I never looked back.

danner boots
The Danner Light is designed for durability and stability in tough terrain. (Photo: Danner)

Why use llamas for long-distance treks?

Llamas are like people: not all are inclined to undertake long treks, but the ones that are do so spectacularly. Their padded feet do not damage the trails. Their size is easily compatible with humans, and they can fit in small vehicles compared to horses. Their calm nature makes them excellent trail companions; they鈥檙e unlikely to panic, and their awareness and vision will spot the mountain goats before you do. Llamas drink about the same amount as you, eat very little, and a fit 300-pound llama can carry 75 pounds of gear.聽

They鈥檙e also very nimble, which is great for technical terrain. Once, during a Pack Llama Trail Association pack trial, I was lining up a group of llamas to negotiate a break in a rimrock cliff that was jammed with loose, sharp boulders. The slot was barely wide enough for the llamas to fit through with their packs. The ranch kid standing next to me asked what we were doing. I said, 鈥淛ust watch.鈥 The llamas negotiated the climb easily while the ranch kid stood with an open mouth. He was used to horses, which would have been stymied. Then he said, 鈥淚 want one of those.

How often do you hike with llamas in the backcountry?

Llamas are like humans: they get fat and lazy if they sit around. So I have to exercise them, often taking up to eight llamas out at a time. I鈥檓 always in front, pounding my feet across the ancient lava beds, through the brush, and down the canyons.

Lisa Wolf at her llama farm
Lisa often wears the Danner Stronghold when she’s working with her llamas. (Photo: Danner)

In this part of Oregon, rock is everywhere. It eats boots fast. I need sturdy, tough boots that last. I need high tops that keep debris out and strong uppers to shield against sharp llama toes. Soles need to be durable and well designed for traction so I don鈥檛 spend too much time on my rump. The boots have to stand up to weather extremes. I鈥檓 on the go every day, so my boots need to be easy to care for, and since even durable soles eventually wear down, it helps if they can be easily recrafted. And Danner boots have everything I need and more.

My current favorite boot is the Danner women鈥檚 , because it鈥檚 durable, gives me stability in rough terrain, and performs admirably in the challenging conditions I face.聽

What鈥檚 one of your most memorable experiences with llamas?

What experience with llamas 颈蝉苍鈥檛 memorable? OK, here鈥檚 one: I stood on a hill overlooking the llama camp during a pack trial in Idaho. I wasn鈥檛 much for hanging out with people at the time and had sought refuge with my super-packer, Sid, who also seemed inclined toward solitude. As we stood there in companionable silence watching the goings on far below, I draped my arm over Sid鈥檚 shoulders and let my mind drift. And then the world shifted. Suddenly, instead of a human and a llama standing on the hill, there was just one of us, melded together, knowing complete companionship, trading thoughts without words. My life hasn鈥檛 been the same since. Llamas can do that if you are ready.

The Voice 50: The Hottest Gear of Next Season

After all but losing spring 2020 to the pandemic, retailers and consumers alike are looking for gear to get excited about in 2021. So excited, in fact, that we decided to add their votes to our ranking of next season鈥檚 top products. Together, we鈥檝e pored over, narrowed down, and rated this year鈥檚 submissions to bring you the 50 most coveted products, ranked.

With all the supply chain disruptions and bleak sales during the pandemic, many brands and retailers are focused on selling through what鈥檚 currently in stock. So we opened up our TV50 nominations to select in-line products as well. They are indicated below with the label “Available Now.”

Breaking Down the Votes

How did we come up with this list? We received 359 submissions from 159 brands. Prices ranged from $2 (for a packet of energy gel) to $4,799 (for a kayak). We culled the list to the most interesting 65 products, then put these finalists out for a vote among three different user groups: our internal editorial team, a panel of retail shop owners, and consumers drawn from a group of superfans of BACKPACKER, our sister publication. Everyone voted on each product, assigning a rating from one (not interested) to ten (very interested).

Here are the top picks of each voter group.
