LaVecchia, 48, a former boat builder, recommends not shying away from the cooler months of the year鈥攂igger, emptier waves during Maine鈥檚 nor鈥檈aster-battered autumn are savored by some surfers. 鈥淎round November, there aren鈥檛 that many people in the water,鈥 he says. 鈥淭here are a loyal group of maybe 50 who surf year-round.鈥澨
