Like the rest of us,聽Chris Robinson聽was terrified when he saw the tsunami crash into Japan in 2011. So to聽protect against a similar event in his hometown of Palo Alto, he decided to build a tsunami-proof capsule聽in his backyard.

Dubbed the , the floating聽unit is聽constructed mostly聽from plywood聽and is shaped more like a聽hoagie sandwich than a sphere. All told,聽it鈥檚 22 feet long, airtight, and built to withstand a serious beating.聽

The Ball is still in progress,聽but once it鈥檚 finished, Robinson聽will test his invention聽in the Pacific, then return it to his backyard and rent it out on AirBnB. He'll聽also post the blueprint聽and construction聽instructions online for anyone who wants to build a survival pod of their own.聽
