When 聽debuted in 2014, we were so excited about the communication device鈥檚 promise that we awarded it a Gear of the Show award. The 1.8-ounce unit,聽which sells in pairs聽for $199,聽syncs聽with an iPhone or Android phone聽via Bluetooth to聽enable聽users to send and receive text messages聽and share GPS coordinates聽without a cell signal.

The tech sounded great in theory, but we didn鈥檛 get the聽chance to test it聽until now.聽Spoiler alert: the tool聽works brilliantly.聽This week,聽I tested two of the聽devices in Brooklyn, where goTenna is headquartered. I stood at one end of Prospect Park聽and communicated with my partner at the other end of the park,聽about a mile away. There were no mountains between us, but there were several large hills and lots of big buildings. To simulate an off-the-grid scenario, we turned our phones to airplane mode and started texting away using the device鈥檚 radio signal.

The texts came through flawlessly, although you are limited to 160 characters or fewer.聽The GPS聽also worked as promised. We downloaded maps to our phones before turning off the cell signal鈥攇oTenna makes maps of states聽and聽countries聽available for free online鈥攁nd each of us appeared as little icons on the map. That feature could be key in the backcountry if you get separated from your party.

The聽technology will be聽groundbreaking for international聽travelers (no exorbitant overseas mobile bills!),聽people who play and work in the backcountry, and professional emergency responders who currently rely on聽satellite聽radios that cost upwards of $1,000.

Pairing the device with my phone was as easy as setting up a pair of Bluetooth headphones. There was聽no radio interference聽because聽goTenna聽works within its own frequency.聽The company聽claims聽you can sync up to ten聽devices at once, although we didn鈥檛 test this on that day.聽聽

There are some limitations.聽GoTenna聽originally聽said聽the devices would have a range of up to聽50 miles聽but scaled that estimate back to six miles during beta testing.聽The range might go to double digits if both devices are on hilltops with nothing between them, but I wouldn鈥檛 want to bank on that.聽

The devices聽don鈥檛 allow users to access the Internet or make calls鈥攋ust text and see location鈥攁nd you can't use a goTenna to text an unpaired聽cell phone.聽But the technology truly seems聽groundbreaking for international聽travelers (you can text your travel companions without an international data plan),聽people who play and work in the backcountry, and professional emergency responders who currently rely on聽satellite聽radios that cost upwards of $1,000.聽

The company聽just won a grant from , a competition funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The money will allow goTenna聽to give聽units to more than 10,000 small businesses聽located throughout Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn聽that were聽victims of Hurricane Sandy. This is especially聽fitting as the idea for the tech was born in the wake of聽that natural disaster.

Preorder customers should receive聽their devices any day. If you want to buy a pair now,聽it should arrive before the holida鈥媦s.
