Funny thing about Rolex: While the brand may be synonymous with luxury, the century-old, Geneva-based watchmaker has legitimate adventure bona fides. In 1926, it engineered the world’s first truly waterproof watch, then sent it on a swim across the English Channel. In 1953, Tenzing Norgay wore a high-altitude prototype on the first ascent of Everest. And in 1960, when Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard touched down on the deepest spot in the ocean鈥攖he Mariana Trench, almost 36,000 feet below sea level鈥攁n experimental predecessor of the Deepsea (the watch you’re looking at) was strapped to the hull. It came up working fine. Fifty years later, this version is built to survive down to 12,800 feet鈥攄eeper than any other standard-issue mechanical watch in the world.
