What Gear Do I Need for a Big Thru-Hike?

I figured anyone who's hiked hundreds of miles across the United States would probably have some useful advice, so I asked five Pacific Crest Trail veterans about the most essentials tools in their packs

By the time聽Pacific Crest Trail hikers reach Ashland, Oregon (my hometown), they鈥檝e walked either聽1,706 miles,聽if聽they鈥檙e heading north, or 844 miles southbound. Either way, they鈥檝e spent a helluva long time on the trail and have been forced聽by necessity聽to dial in their kit. To glean some gear tips from these masters, I chatted with a handful who were hanging out in town聽(all identified by their trail names).

Sketch

(Joe Jackson)

Trail name origin: 鈥淚 draw sketches.鈥

Hometown: San Francisco, California

Age: 36

Tip: Pete Brook, who鈥檚 written about his time on the PCT for 国产吃瓜黑料,聽suggests backpacking in cheap shorts. 鈥淚f you are happy hiking in shorts, it鈥檚 the one piece of gear where you don鈥檛 really have to get anything high tech. You can go to a thrift store, you can go to Walmart. The only thing I would say is to get a pair with pockets,鈥 says Sketch. As a bonus,聽they鈥檙e relatively cheap and easy to replace.

French Fry

(Joe Jackson)

Trail name origin: 鈥淚 really, really love french fries, specifically McDonald鈥檚 french fries. I am a pretty healthy person, but that is my Achilles heel.鈥

Hometown: Temecula, California

Age: 26

Tip: 鈥淕et big hipbelt pockets [on your pack],鈥 says French Fry. Why? Because with big pockets, you can store your lunch and eat it on the move,聽which is important when you鈥檙e trying to log a lot of miles.聽Same goes for your water鈥攈ikers suggest聽using a hydration system聽or making sure water bottles are accessible with a聽pack on.

Blue Cheese

(Joe Jackson)

Trail name origin: 鈥淚t had something to do with the smell of my feet at some point.鈥

Hometown: Cologne, Germany

Age: 22

Tip: Start cheap and upgrade as needed. Blue Cheese聽didn鈥檛 want to spend a lot of money on the wrong gear, so she started with what she already had at home聽and figured out what to invest in while on the trail鈥攖here are stores that carry gear along the way. So far,聽she鈥檚 bought a new backpack, a new sleeping bag, and a new tent,聽all of which meet her specific needs.

Vertigo

(Joe Jackson)

Trail name origin: 鈥淚 was in Cajon Pass, 300聽miles in, and I just woke up one day and stumbled聽around for three days.鈥

Hometown: Winnipeg, Manitoba

Age: 36

Tip: You can spend weeks in the same set of clothing. Proof: Vertigo has gone hundreds of miles in one pair of shorts, one shirt, one pair of underwear, and two pair of socks. He likes wool because it cuts down on the inevitable stink and suggests going for nice kit from brands like Icebreaker because the quality聽stuff will hold up better to the abuse.

Cookie Scrambler

(Joe Jackson)

Trail name origin: 鈥淚 had lots of Swiss chocolate cookies at the beginning, and I was giving them to other hikers鈥 was also scrambling up boulders to get the best pictures, and that鈥檚 how I got the scrambler.鈥

Hometown: Zermatt, Switzerland

Age: 35

Tip: You don鈥檛 have to go ultralight when you鈥檙e backpacking or thru-hiking. 鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 afford the ultralight gear. In Europe, to get ultralight gear is very difficult, so I thought I would start off with what I have,鈥 she says. Without water, her pack weighs聽45 pounds, but she鈥檚 worked up the fitness to keep up with other hikers on the trail.
