Alexander Kendrick, a 16-year-old from Los Alamos, New Mexico, has invented a device that allows cavers to text to the surface of the Earth from deep underground, reports. It's basically a computer attached to a hand radio. It transmits data via low-frequency radio waves, which can penetrate rock, unlike high frequency FM waves. Why is this wunderkind's invention important? It would facilitate rescue ops in case of a caving emergency. If someone breaks a leg 1,000 feet underground, for example, rescuers could get to the injured party more quickly by communicating via this gadget.
