For years, our articles editor packed his outdoor stuff into grocery bags and plastic bins. Then, he discovered Kitworks, a new customizable travel system for gear.

I Used to Suck at Packing for Outdoor Trips. Then I Found Kitworks.

My wife and I used to follow the same annoying ritual on Friday afternoons.

In the hour before our daughter got out of school, we would frantically stuff our clothing, toiletries, food, and outdoor gear into reusable grocery bags鈥攖he cloth kind you can buy at Whole Foods for a buck. There was no rhyme or reason guiding what stuff went into what bag. We’d then cram these bulging sacks into several cracked and stained Rubbermaid tubs, which I’d shove into the hatchback of my Subaru in a demented game of Tetris.

We’d then battle rush-hour traffic en route to the mountains.

The process was stressful and jumbled, and the only activity I enjoyed less than loading the car was unloading it at the family condo or campsite, exhausted from the commute, often in the dark. My packing system regularly failed: Bag handles broke and fabric tore, spilling oatmeal, Legos, cosmetics, and whatever else into the bins or onto the floor of my car.

You’d assume that we would have abandoned this unruly system long ago. But no, it went on for years.

Then, this past January, I discovered .

OK鈥攖o be fair, Kitworks discovered me. Perhaps the biggest perk of working in outdoor journalism is the opportunity to test and then write about outdoor gear. And when a PR rep told me that there was a self-described “customizable gear-management system” that purported to bring order to even the most scattershot outdoor enthusiasts, I signed up.

So Many Storage Options

The outdoor industry is rapidly learning that many of its most passionate customers maintain a level of chaos that would make Marie Kondo shrivel up and die from anxiety. I am one of these people. My best efforts at living a systematic, controlled lifestyle are usually undermined by three familiar culprits: a lack of time, zero budget, and my fruit fly-like attention span. Cue the grocery bags.

In recent years, brands have addressed customers like me by pumping out a vast array of travel and storage products. Gregory sells its hard-sided ; Yeti makes a massive ; and even and 听now produce totes and soft-sided luggage.

The Kitworks Gear Box

Kitworks joined the fray in 2024. The brand is the brainchild of Greg Mills, a Portland, Oregon-based ecommerce veteran, skier, mountain biker, and trail runner. He describes himself as “a little obsessive about organization and gear” on the company’s website.

Mills wanted to create a gear storage system that catered to a wide range of outdoor activities, was built using sustainable materials, and didn’t suck. In 2022 he began checking out prototypes.

At first glance, some the products Mills eventually created aren’t dramatically different from those that were already on the market. Its Everyday Tote and Gear Cubes will look familiar to anyone who owns a Yeti Camino 35 carryall or REI’s branded luggage organizers.

But during his R and D journey, Mills came across a way to set his products apart. “I realized that the power in this solution had to come from being adaptable to everyone’s gear management needs,” Mills said.听“A gear box isn’t the right answer for every pursuit. Sometimes a tote format is more appropriate. Or a duffel when air travel is involved.”

And sometimes those boxes and totes and duffels should be customizable听for each user and his or her favorite activity. And the customer鈥攏ot the manufacturer鈥攕hould do the customizing.

What Is Kitworks?

Kitworks’ secret sauce is most evident in its Gear Box, a 22-by-17-by-14-inch cavernous rectangular box. The thing is made from an ultra-tough ripstop TPU shell, carries up to 250 pounds, and collapses down flat. Double Velcro rails line each of the four interior walls.

These rails contain the brand’s proverbial magic. You insert a series of hard-sided dividers into the box, connect them to the Velcro via Velcro tabs, and voila, you have created an organizational layout to fit your stuff. Don’t like your setup? Just undo the Velcro tabs, move the dividers around, and poof, you have a better fit.

Yep, it’s so simple it’ll make you slap your forehead and wonder why didn’t I think of this?

Prior to a recent camping trip, I got out the Gear Box and built long and narrow chambers to store our plates bowls. I then built two wider sections for the Jetboil, Aeropress, and cups and water bottles. I left one third of the box as a massive open chamber to fit the 鈥攖he smaller cousin to Kitworks’ 55-liter . In this tote I placed our dry goods for the trip: oatmeal, gorp, dried fruit, and snacks.

Two different trips, two different Kitworks setups. (Image: Fred Dreier)

On the inside of the Gear Box’s lid, I used the small straps and mesh bags to store cutlery, wipes, dish soap, cloth towel, a sponge, and some hand sanitizer.

For a ski trip, I built an entirely different setup: Two walls divided the box into thirds, and in each one I stored gloves, hats, parkas, and even my ski boots. For a weekend getaway in the spring, I left the dividers out entirely and filled the entire box with my daughter’s blankets, stuffed animals, and picture books.

Three trips, three different setups, zero grocery bags.

Kitworks also sells add-ons that connect to reinforced tabs that line the box’s interior and exterior: pockets, utility pouches, ID labels, organizers, and small gear cubes.

I’ve also utilized the 55-liter Gear Tote and smaller Everyday Tote, both of which are made from burly, recycled ripstop polyester and a TPU laminated shell. Both bags made my grocery sack system seem utterly pathetic.

What鈥檚 the Price of Being Organized?

The Kitworks system totally upended my previous way of packing鈥攖hank God. And in the months that I’ve used the products, I have noticed that packing the Subaru is a little less frantic than it used to be.

And yeah, building a custom setup for a trip is also kinda fun鈥擨 now give myself an extra few minutes to create the Gear Box of my dreams prior to a trip. No, Kitworks hasn’t totally converted me to KonMari. But hey, I’m making strides.

Throughout my testing of Kitworks, I’ve often wondered if an enterprising outdoor fanatic could create their own DIY system like this using store-bought plastic tubs, ad-hoc dividers, a hot glue gun, and cheap bags. Like other gear storage systems, Kitworks isn’t cheap. The Gear Box retails for $289, and the divider set is an extra $47. The Gear Tote is $149, and the Everyday Tote is $49.

My conclusion is that yes, you could absolutely build this鈥攁nd I encourage anyone with Type-A tendencies and some crafting savvy to try. But there are more than a few luxuries tied to the Kitworks that, in my opinion, make it a worthy investment.

When you’re not using the Gear Box, you can collapse it down to the size of a big cutting board and store it under a bed. Replicating that feature is a tough ask for even the most enterprising DIYer.

And the recycled material Kitworks uses in all its products is bomb-proof and water-resistant. If the peanut butter jar wasn’t quite secured, or the carton of oat milk sprang a leak, you wouldn’t听be left with a sticky mess for long. Hose it down, scrub it clean, leave it outside to dry.

Sure, you can try that with a grocery bag, but take it from me, you won’t like the results.

These hiking shoes breathe, grip, and manage moisture in heat and humidity

The Best Lightweight Hiking Shoes for Summer

Summer is here. In the southern Appalachian Mountains, that means triple-digit temperatures, humidity that does crazy things to my hair, and the constant search for cool swimming holes to battle the heat. It鈥檚 a season that demands a certain kind of footwear. Instead of a clunky, full-leather boot, I need summer hiking shoes that breathe like Wim Hof and can handle constant stream crossings and maybe even the occasional cold plunge into a deep, backcountry pool.

I鈥檝e been on a perpetual hunt for the perfect summer hiking shoe for the last decade, and this spring I committed to finding my match, testing several pairs of highly rated hikers designed for hot temperatures and intentionally leaving sandals out of my search. I spent the last month wearing these hiking shoes on backpacking trips, day hikes, waterfall hunts, and a few speed treks. Throughout the process, I found four contenders that rose above the rest, each designed for a specific situation and now on my regular rotation throughout the summer.

My 4 Favorite Summer Hiking Shoes

Best Overall Summer Hiker: Astral Nosobo听

This is it. The Astral Nosobo. Hands down, it鈥檚 my favorite summer hiking shoe, and the shoe that I reach for on most occasions, whether I鈥檓 traipsing around town for coffee or heading into the mountains for an eight-mile suffer fest. Astral is known for making water-centric footwear, and is often the shoe of choice for kayakers and paddle boarders that are constantly in and out of the water. I鈥檝e worn several models over the last decade and love them for river-based adventures. I usually wouldn鈥檛 choose them as my hiking shoes though, as they lack the support and cushion I desperately need. But the Nosobo is a true hiking shoe (with a skate-shoe aesthetic) that just happens to be comfortable around the water.

Watch: Astral Nosobo Review

The Nosobo is built on a zero-drop platform, which I鈥檓 typically hesitant to wear because I need as much cushion as possible under my feet, but Astral鈥檚 take on zero drop isn鈥檛 about minimalism. They simply created a level footbed with 20mm of cushion under the entire foot. The result is a smooth, comfortable ride that doesn鈥檛 make me feel like I鈥檓 wearing heels, which is a downside of all of the max cushion running shoes I鈥檓 addicted to.

Beneath that cushion is Astral鈥檚 proprietary G.15 rubber outsole, which was designed to handle river rocks and is the grippiest sole I鈥檝e ever tested. The upper is made from 85 percent recycled nylon and is super breathable and quick to dry, even if you decide to take these shoes for a swim like I did. Astral adopted a wider toe box for the Nosobo, which I like, but they kept their signature locking heel and secure mid foot design. Put it all together and you have a really secure shoe that doesn鈥檛 slip regardless of the situation, but also a wide, stable platform in uneven terrain.

Astral offers replaceable footbeds for the Nosobo, so if you wear them for several months and notice some of the spring and cushion has dissipated, you can slip in a brand new midsole and enjoy that new-shoe bounce again. I haven鈥檛 reached that point yet after two months, but I like the idea of replacing the midsole as opposed to buying a new pair of shoes.

I鈥檝e worn the Nosobo on hikes, rafting trips, date nights, and even to do some deep water solo adventures at the . These shoes perform really well in a variety of situations, but they鈥檝e become my go-to footwear for the summer for one simple reason: They鈥檙e comfortable. The Nosobo is the kind of shoe that I forget to take off when I get home at the end of the day and put my feet up to watch a game. They鈥檙e so comfortable, I literally forget I鈥檓 wearing them, and that鈥檚 the highest compliment I can give a pair of shoes.

Best for Backpacking: Teva Grandview Max Vent听

At first glance, the Grandview Max Vent looks like your standard bulky hiking boot, but this shoe was built for summer. Yes, the high-top style offers plenty of support for hikers carrying a heavy pack, and Teva鈥檚 Universal Heel Lock System doubles down on that support by keeping your foot in place even on steep terrain. But instead of a burly build, the Grandview Max Vent has a super breathable mesh upper that鈥檚 built on top of a plush, max-cushion midsole to provide bounce even when you hit double digit miles on the trail.

The mesh material means these shoes aren鈥檛 waterproof, but they do dry pretty quickly if they happen to get wet. I wore the Grandview Max Vent on an overnight backpacking trip and several longer day hikes in Pisgah National Forest, and was really impressed with the wide toe box and supple cushion underfoot, both of which combined for a very comfortable long-haul boot. I don鈥檛 typically love high-top hikers, but the mesh construction kept me from feeling claustrophobic in the summer heat. These boots are breezy and comfortable enough that they鈥檝e become my top choice for backpacking trips.

Best for Swimming Hole Hikes: Hoka Hopara听

Hikes in the southern Appalachians are a wet affair because the mountains are full of rivers and streams, and the trails often cross these bodies of water. While I like the idea of a hiking sandal, I need the full protection of a shoe because there鈥檚 nothing worse than kicking a rock or root while wearing an open-toe shoe. The Hopara gives you the freedom of a sandal but the protection of a shoe with an upper that fully covers the toes but plenty of cutouts to help drain water. It鈥檚 not a revolutionary design, but it works when you鈥檙e in and out of water while covering longer miles.

They were comfortable out of the box, much like the brand鈥檚 running shoes, and I didn鈥檛 have any issues with hot spots while hiking without socks. Hoka gave the sandal its signature plush midsole as well as a super grippy outsole with aggressive lugs so it can handle the trail regardless of how technical the terrain becomes. I wore the Hopara on several hikes while hunting waterfalls and swimming holes, and I was impressed with how secure they felt thanks to the lace system that cinches down easily. Also cool: They didn鈥檛 weigh me down while swimming in rivers. The Hopara has been my go-to shoe for waterfall and swimming hole adventures so far this summer.

Best for Fast Hikes: Merrell Speed Arc Surge BOA听

There鈥檚 no getting around that the Speed Arc Surge BOA is expensive. But Merrell loaded this shoe with all kinds of cutting edge tech, all designed to help you move fast on the trail. The most notable features are the midsole with a nylon plate sandwiched between two layers of foam designed to maximize energy return, and the two-point BOA fit system that allows you to dial in the fit (literally, there are dials) on the fly.

You might expect all of that foam underfoot to give you a soft, max cushion ride, but that鈥檚 not the case with the Speed Arc Surge BOA. Sure, it鈥檚 a comfortable shoe, but it鈥檚 more springy than plush, which is exactly what you want if you鈥檙e trying to cover a lot of miles fast. The BOA fit system works beautifully, giving you a secure fit that you can micro adjust without creating any hot spots.

But what I love most about this shoe is the sock-like upper, which slips on easily and molds snugly around the top of your foot. The best word I can use to describe the feeling is 鈥渃ozy.鈥 Fun fact: Merrell uses threads of Kevlar in that upper to maximize durability. But be warned: The Speed Arc Surge BOA does not have an understated design, so people will notice your kicks. Several other hikers commented on the look of my shoes as we passed along the trail during my testing period. My daughter says they look like 鈥渕oon boots.鈥 Fair enough.

The Near Zero 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle Is the Perfect Gear Package for Beginner Backpackers

I remember my first backpacking trip. I was 19 years old and wanted to spend my spring break backpacking around North Georgia鈥檚 Cohutta Wilderness Area. I didn鈥檛 know I needed a sleeping pad to insulate me from the cold ground. I shivered through my first night and headed back to the dorm on day two. This was the 鈥90s, before the advent of YouTube tutorials, so I didn鈥檛 know what I didn鈥檛 know.

For newbies, backpacking can be intimidating. You have to carry all of your gear on your back, go deep into the woods, and be completely self-sufficient several miles from the nearest fast food restaurant. If you鈥檝e never done it before, it can be a scary prospect. What gear will you need? How should you pack it?

Near Zero鈥檚 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle and The Dean 60-liter pack are designed to take the guesswork out of backpacking by providing all of the gear you need for an overnight adventure in one affordable bundle. For $600, about the price of a good tent, the bundle听 comes with ten pieces of gear, from the workhorse 60-liter pack down to a titanium spork. There鈥檚 a two-person tent made from 20-denier ripstop with a single-pole design, a 25-degree sleeping bag, and even an inflatable pillow. All of the gear comes pre-packed in The Dean when it鈥檚 shipped, so just add water and food, and you can hit the trail.

Testing the Near Zero 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle

I spent two weeks testing out the system, setting up the gear in my backyard, and then using it all on an overnight 14-mile loop through Pisgah National Forest, and I was really impressed with Near Zero鈥檚 streamlined approach. If you鈥檙e already an experienced backpacker, you might find some of the aspects of The Dean and 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle unnecessary, but it鈥檚 perfect for beginners.

The Dean simplifies packing with its built-in organizational dividers with specific spots dedicated to each piece of gear. Those spots are even labeled, so you know where to put your sleeping bag, tent, cookware, etc. You can buy The Dean separately ($199), and it will still come with those dividers and labels, but I highly recommend spending a little more to get the full 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle. The ten pieces of included gear are quality items on par with what you can find in the mid-price range at your local outfitter.

That includes the , which has a single pole design with color coded tabs, making it easy to pitch even for first-timers. I like the three interior pockets sewn into the mesh for stashing items you need to keep handy. The sleeping bag and pad ( and) are both comfortable and lightweight, and the addition of the i is a nice touch. My favorite piece of gear is the 鈥攁 stainless steel, feather-weight burner that packs into the included stainless steel , leaving enough room to store a small canister of fuel inside the pot, too. If you were to buy those pieces of gear individually through Near Zero, you鈥檇 pay more than $1,000, and you could easily spend twice that much on similar gear at a traditional retail store.

All together, the bag and gear included in the bundle weigh less than 14 pounds, which isn鈥檛 an ultralight set up by any means, but it鈥檚 light enough to be manageable even for first time backpackers.

I hiked for seven miles each day of my trip with The Dean loaded down with gear, food, and water, and I was impressed with how comfortable the pack was on my back. I trekked through rough terrain, gaining 2,000 feet each day, rock hopping across streams, and shimmying beneath rhododendron tunnels, and The Dean never felt unwieldy or awkward. The shoulder and harness system are well padded without being over-engineered, and there are plenty of external pockets to stash things like snacks, keys, or your phone.

Contents inside open backpacking pack
The Near Zero 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle includes the Dean 60 L pack that’s already packed with all the backpacking gear you need. Just add food and water before heading out on your adventure. (Photo: Graham Averill)

As I mentioned, the internal dividers are the big innovation in this pack, and I personally love the idea鈥攁 place for all your gear and all your gear in its place. Experienced backpackers might not appreciate this type of organization because they likely have their own system for packing gear. If that鈥檚 the case, you can remove the dividers and have a large, cavernous space to fill as you please. One of my favorite features of the pack are the two oversized water bottle sleeves on the sides, which are big enough to fit 32-ounce water bottles and other gear, too. I stuffed my map, GoPro, and tripod in those sleeves along with my water, and could reach everything without having to take the pack off my back.

Aside from the internal organization, The Dean has a pretty straightforward design with most of the details you鈥檇 expect from a good backpack, like a dedicated water bladder slot, built-in rain cover, and a frame that鈥檚 adjustable from 14 to 22 inches.

I only have minor complaints about The Dean. There are a couple of gear tabs on the outside of the pack that occasionally get in the way of the main compartment鈥檚 zipper. I also wish that it came in a smaller size. A 60-liter pack is large鈥擨 typically try to pare down my gear to fit inside a 45-liter pack. But The Dean and the 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle are designed for beginners, and overpacking is a way that newbies comfort themselves before heading out into the big, bad wilderness, so I understand the larger size.

One thing to consider: If you鈥檙e backpacking in a place that requires a bear proof canister, you鈥檒l probably have to remove one or more of the dividers in this bag to make room for those cumbersome containers.

As for the other gear that comes with the 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle, it鈥檚 all highly curated and exactly what someone new to backpacking should carry. The titanium spork is long enough to use with dehydrated meals, so you don鈥檛 get your fingers dirty from scraping the bottom of the pouch. The sleeping gear is the ideal balance of weight savings and comfort. The tent probably won鈥檛 last for years of abuse, but most tents don鈥檛. The only thing you鈥檒l need to add to this kit is some sort of water filtration device, otherwise, you鈥檙e good to go when this bundle arrives on your doorstep.

If you鈥檙e backpacking-curious and looking for a way to take the leap without making any gear-related mistakes, Near Zero鈥檚 国产吃瓜黑料 Bundle is essentially foolproof.

Get the comfort of a trail runner with the durability of a hiking shoe

First Look: Danner N45

Nothing challenges a shoe like thru-hiking a long trail. On the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, you need the Goldilocks of hiking footwear: comfortable, breathable, lightweight, and durable. If that sounds like a tall order, it鈥檚 because it is, and most thru-hikers compromise by choosing comfort over durability, using trail runners that need to be replaced at least four times on the journey from Mexico to Canada.

But the days of compromising are over. The designers at Danner have come up with the new, a hybrid shoe that marries the breathability, comfort, and lightweight materials of trail running shoes with the durability, stability, and traction of more traditional hiking shoes. The goal was to create an option that鈥檚 more appropriate for a months-long thru-hike, says Yoji Kaneda, a product line manager at Danner.

Featuring ultralight and durable nitrogen-infused EnduroFoam midsoles, the N45 has a high energy return that feels like you鈥檙e walking on air. (Photo: Danner)

Durability

Kaneda says the Danner team studied how various shoes break down in order to make the N45 more durable. They found that on long thru-hikes, other shoes鈥 midsoles lose cushion over time. After that, the rubber outsole begins to deteriorate. With that in mind, designers found the sweet spot for the N45鈥檚 midsole鈥攐ne with high rebound yet more durability compared to the soles used on typical trail running shoes. The midsole foam is also nitrogen-infused supercritical foam, which adds more cushion and rebound than what鈥檚 found in a lot of hiking shoes, so they feel springy despite having a more durable construction.

Eventually the soles will show wear, as even the most durable rubber deteriorates after enough miles. To help remedy this, at the brand鈥檚 factory in Portland, Oregon, extending their life and adding to the shoe鈥檚 sustainability story.

Of course, long-lasting soles won鈥檛 matter if the uppers don鈥檛 hold up. The N45鈥檚 uppers are made with cut- and abrasion-resistant Perspair, a PU-coated nylon thread woven to create a material that is extremely lightweight and breathable yet incredibly durable.

Performance

Traction is also top-notch, thanks to Vibram Traction Lugs, which flex to increase surface area by 50 percent鈥攁nd more surface area means better grip. 鈥溾嬧媁hen I was hiking in Sedona earlier in February, the Vibram Megagrip compound did really well on hot, dry rocks and also on partially snowy forest floors,鈥 Kaneda says.

Comfort

You can鈥檛 have maximum comfort without a great fit, which is why the women鈥檚 version of the N45 is built specifically for the anatomy of a woman鈥檚 foot. That means creating a new last, or foot mold, which requires countless hours of research and design. led to a precision fit for the N45, with a narrower heel and wider forefoot, reflecting how women鈥檚 feet have changed in the modern era. This women-specific fit is also used in the , which is highly breathable and cushioned and retains Danner鈥檚 legendary craftsmanship.

Add it all up, Kaneda says, and with the N45, 鈥測ou get a lightweight hiker that provides more stability, grip, and durability than trail runners while still having the benefit of lightweight, plush cushioning.鈥 Not too hard. Not too soft. Just right.

For nearly a century, has crafted boots with purpose and integrity, footwear to equip those who choose the unlikely path鈥攖hose who cut fresh trails, those who pioneer. Key West听

This fun and funky island, the southernmost point you can drive to in the United States, is the unofficial cultural hub of The Keys. It鈥檚 famous for its resident artists as well as its annual celebrations, like , which culminates in a parade on the last Saturday of October. A stop at the is a must; there you鈥檒l learn about the author鈥檚 life on and off the island and have a chance to see one of Hemingway鈥檚 six-toed cats.

Hop on the and you鈥檒l be guided through highlights, from former cigar factories and speakeasies to the southernmost point in the United States and Harry S. Truman鈥檚 鈥淟ittle White House.鈥

The Lower Keys

This tangle of quiet islands between Marathon and Key West offers a tranquil escape known for small-town vibes, scenic bridges, and preserved land and marine refuges. The Lower Keys are surrounded by pristine, protected waters鈥攊deal conditions for exploring life beneath the surface. The 524-acre makes for an easy entry into snorkeling. You can rent all the gear you need from the local concessionaire and then enter the water directly from the beach to find coral heads, tropical fish, and conch close to shore in just a few feet of water.

Marathon

One of the greatest experiences you can have in The Keys is catching a fish in the afternoon, then having a professional chef cook it for you that very evening. Marathon is a great place to do exactly that, at , which specializes in cooking your very own catch, which the chefs will prepare either broiled, grilled, or fried and round it out with two sides.

The ten-mile-long community, made up of 13 separate islands, has plenty of other options if you鈥檙e not an angler but still want fresh fish. Hit , which offers a variety of prepared local seafood as well as fresh ceviche and sushi. Islamorada听

Known as the sportfishing capital of the world, the six islands that make up Islamorada boast fast access to some of the most fertile fishing waters in North America, with anglers reeling in the most sought-after game fish in the world, from tarpon to bonefish. There鈥檚 so much fishing surrounding Islamorada, it can be hard to know exactly where you should focus your efforts. First, pick your fish, then home in on a location. Key Largo听

The first island you reach from the mainland, Key Largo acts as a gateway to the greater Keys and is renowned in its own right for its lush, tropical forest and public land, boasting two state parks as well as portions of a national park and national marine sanctuary.

In fact, you could spend your entire trip to Key Largo bouncing from one outdoor adventure to the next. If you鈥檝e always dreamed of the open sea, spend three days learning to sail a Catalina 22 at the , then borrow one of the school鈥檚 boats for your own adventure after completing the course.

Amateur botanists and animal lovers should hike the trails of , home to a West Indian hardwood hammock that protects more than 80 protected species, from wild cotton to the American crocodile. And no trip to Key Largo is complete without paddling , where you might spy manatee, turtles, and stingray from the deck of your paddleboard.听With such a close connection between land and sea, it鈥檚 no surprise Key Largo is home to dolphin therapy, one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the world. The nonprofit provides therapeutic encounters for military vets and people with special needs, as well as experiences for all visitors. Every morning, guests have a chance to meet the pod of dolphins that live in the center. You can even sign up for a yoga class with the dolphins.

Most people know the听 as a great escape to one of the most unique places on earth. Calm. Serene. Laid back. Just the right setting to recharge your batteries and rejuvenate your spirits. But a getaway to the Florida Keys and Key West is much more than peace and quiet. And not just because of the legendary fishing and the world鈥檚 most spectacular dive sites. The Keys mean history. Art. Theater. Museums. Shopping. Fine dining. Entertainment. And much more. All told, 120 miles of perfect balance between natural beauty and extra-ordinary excitement.

Cotopaxi Abrazo Half-Zip Fleece Jacket
Abrazo means 鈥渉ug鈥 in Spanish, which is what this fluffy fleece jacket from Cotopaxi feels like. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

Cotopaxi Women’s Abrazo Half-Zip Fleece Jacket for $90 ($120)

Abrazo means 鈥渉ug鈥 in Spanish, which is what this fluffy fleece jacket from Cotopaxi feels like. As part of the brand鈥檚 effort to be more Earth-friendly, this piece is made with 100% recycled fabric, with those bright, patchy colors we鈥檝e come to know and love. A zippered chest pocket makes it easy to stash small essentials, like keys and a credit card, while elastic cuffs help seal in warmth. Forgot your gloves? This garment has a pass-through kangaroo pocket that鈥檚 perfect for hand warming.

Smartwool Women’s Performance Hike Light Cushion Crew Socks for $19 ($25)

It often feels like quality Merino socks are never on sale, but Smartwool’s socks are 25% off for a limited time. These Hike Light crew socks are some of my all-time favorites for three-season hiking because of their ventilating mesh zones and well-placed cushioning around the soles of the feet. After dozens of trail miles in them, I’ve never experienced a blister or a hot spot on my heel, thanks to their incredibly form-fitting design for and .

Dakine Charger Mips Snow Helmet for $97 ($130)听

The Dakine Charger helmet is designed with the Mips Brain Protection System for added safety. Created by a brain surgeon, the idea behind this cranium-protecting tech is simple: to redirect rotational motion away from the head, lowering the chance of a traumatic brain injury during a fall on the slopes. It鈥檚 so effective that my mom made me splurge on a helmet three years ago, and honestly, I haven鈥檛 looked back. Dakine鈥檚 Charger Helmet also comes in three different colors and sizes to suit a wide variety of riders. A 100% recycled foam liner and webbing add a touch of eco-friendliness to its design, but my favorite feature is its plush, removable ear pads, which help keep your lobes warm when you鈥檙e shredding in the terrain park.

KUHL Fugitive Flannel Shirt
Kuhl鈥檚 Fugitive Flannel Shirt is made from an incredibly soft, midweight cotton and Tencel fabric that offers breathability and warmth. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

Kuhl Men’s Fugitive Flannel Shirt for $64 ($85)

I鈥檓 a huge fan of gifting flannel shirts to my friends when temperatures start to drop, and is made from an incredibly soft, midweight cotton and Tencel fabric that offers breathability and warmth. Small metal accent buttons and adjustable cuffs add just a touch of panache. It also comes in five earth-toned color schemes, so the lumberjack on your list can wear his or her favorite hue, too.

REI Co-op Women’s Midweight Base Layer Top for $38 ($55)

I recently tested 13 different base layers, and was easily the best synthetic style for shoppers on a budget. Now, at 30% off, this Bluesign-approved, Fair Trade garment is even more affordable. Summiting something above the tree line? Its UPF 50+ fabric helps protect against the sun鈥檚 harmful rays. Uphill skiing? Its 92% recycled polyester naturally wicks away moisture during intense cardio sessions. Most of all, I adored its integrated thump loops, which made for easy layering on a recent canyoneering trip to Moab. And you can pair it with the for a complete set.

Garmin inReach Mini 2 for $300 ($400)

We鈥檝e written a lot about the Garmin inReach Mini in the past, praising it as a fantastic communication tool for the avid backcountry adventurer. When I hiked the John Muir Trail back in 2021, it was one of my key pieces of safety gear and I even used it to text my partner and ask him to send a different piece of equipment I needed to my next stop. The inReach Mini made the wilderness feel less terrifying as a solo female hiker. REI is taking $100 off its sticker price of $400 this November, meaning that you or your loved one can dispatch emergency services or text each other seamlessly in the mountains. Just don鈥檛 forget to download the Garmin Explore App for easier smartphone access on your trip.

Flash 2 Tent
The compact tent is easy to stuff into an elastic water bottle pouch on the side of your pack. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

REI Co-op Flash 2 Tent for $300 ($429)

It鈥檚 tough to find an ultralight two-person tent for under $450, but REI鈥檚 Flash 2 is reminiscent of similar Big Agnes designs鈥攁t a fraction of the price. With 40 inches of headroom and 29 square feet of floor space, it鈥檚 just large enough for two hikers, and its double doors mean easy middle-of-the-night bathroom breaks, which your backpacking partner will thank you for. But with a minimum trail weight of 2 pounds, 13 ounces, it鈥檚 also light enough to take on a solo trek, without missing out on useful details like internal mesh pockets and an included rainfly. The tent is designed to be compact (and packs down about the size of a 32-ounce Nalgene), so it鈥檚 easy to stuff into an elastic water bottle pouch on the side of your pack.

Nemo Stargaze Reclining Camp Chair听 for $150 ($250)

It seems like every time I write about car camping chairs, the NEMO Stargaze tops the competition. One of our resident testers called it 鈥渕ore like a mini-hammock than a chair鈥 because of its swing-style design, which allows users to recline way back for optimal celestial viewing. Two integrated cup holders make it easy to stash a beverage or a phone close at hand, and an adjustable, padded headrest keeps your neck comfy if you鈥檙e, say, scouring the sky for the Perseids. It weighs in at just under 8 pounds and easily folds into an included carry bag when you鈥檙e ready to pack up, making this portable backcountry lounger easy to bring along on different adventures, whether that鈥檚 a music festival or a remote car camping trip. And now, it鈥檚 $100 off, so this stargazer is even sweeter.

Superfeet Hike Support Insoles for $41 ($55)

As a former dancer and big-time backpacker, my 37-year-old feet need Superfeet鈥檚 insoles more than ever, and their entire lineup is 25% off right now. My favorite is the , which suits my medium-height arches well and is specifically designed for trekkers who spend time rambling around on trails. A carbon fiber heel cap puts extra spring in your step (literally), while odor-resistant dual-layer foam gives your feet the cushy landing they deserve on punishing downhills. These stabilizing insoles are built to keep their shape, with a guaranteed 12 months or 500 miles of adventuring.

Danner Mountain 600 Leaf GTX Hiking Boots
During REI鈥檚 Winter Sale, all Danner footwear is 25% off. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

Danner Mountain 600 Leaf GTX Hiking Boots for $165 ($220)听

Danner has long been a top hiking boot brand for outdoor lovers, making big waves in the retail scene after being featured on the cover of Wild and in the Reese Witherspoon film based on the book. As part of REI鈥檚 Winter Sale, all Danner footwear is 25% off, and the incoming snowy season makes for a great time to upgrade your waterproof footwear with the . Your feet will stay dry with a Gore-Tex liner and a full leather upper, while the Vibram sole offers solid grip on the trail, even when it鈥檚 wet and muddy out. Best of all? If you do manage to wear this duds out, they can be resoled and restitched for decades of use.

Smartwool Women鈥檚 Classic Thermal Merino Crew Base Layer Top for $86 ($115)

I鈥檝e been a huge fan of Smartwool鈥檚 uber-soft Merino wool base layers for nearly a decade because of their superior warmth, natural odor resistance, and next-to-skin fit. This Classic Thermal Merino Crew Top is constructed with 250-weight Merino wool fabric, which is warm enough for most winter pursuits, like resort skiing or snowshoeing in a national park. Personally, I love that Smartwool offers this piece in 15 different colors, making it easy for me to show a little personality on the slopes. It鈥檚 on sale for and 鈥攁nd don鈥檛 forget the , which are also 25% off.

REI Co-op 650 Down Jacket
REI Co-op鈥檚 650 Down Jacket is easily my favorite budget-friendly puffer, and now, it鈥檚 a whopping 40% off. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

REI Co-op Women鈥檚 650 Down Jacket for $77 ($129)

At just $129 on a typical day, REI Co-op鈥檚 650 Down Jacket is easily my favorite budget-friendly puffer, and now, it鈥檚 a whopping 40% off both styles for and . Its super-soft face fabric has kept me cozy on many chilly morning dog walks, and the fact that it鈥檚 coated with a non-fluorinated durable water repellent (DWR) is just gravy. Best of all, unlike many other affordable down puffies, this one is , uses filling, and comes from a company.

Fj盲llr盲ven Women’s Expedition Pack Down Hoodie for $196 ($280)

If you鈥檙e looking for a warmer, beefier down jacket to keep you toasty this winter, look no further than Fj盲llr盲ven鈥檚 Expedition Pack Down Hoodie for and . It鈥檚 designed as a throwback to the brand鈥檚 vintage styles, using ethically sourced 700-fill-power down to create a packable and lightweight puffer weighing 15.4 ounces. Its shell and lining fabrics are made with 100% recycled nylon, and recycled synthetic insulation inside the shoulders helps keep you warm, even when you’re sweating from wearing a pack. Traveling light? The entire jacket packs down into its small inside pocket for easy stashing.

Osprey Ariel 65 Pack
The pack, which was designed specifically for women, has an adjustable torso slider that makes it easy to dial in the perfect fit.

Osprey Ariel 65L Backpacks for $240 ($320)

I鈥檓 a sucker for Osprey鈥檚 form-fitting multi-day packs and its All-Mighty Guarantee, which protects all products for a lifetime of heavy use. We rated the Ariel 55 as our favorite women鈥檚 backpacking pack in 2018, and its latest iteration is still excellent. The pack, which was designed specifically for women, has an adjustable torso slider that makes it easy to dial in the perfect fit while an injection-molded foam backpanel keeps air flowing even on sweaty ascents. The pack鈥檚 fabric is treated with a PFC-free DWR coating, and its hip pockets can each easily stash four protein bars. I also love the backpack鈥檚 feature set, which includes a rain cover and dual ice axe loops.

La Sportiva Men’s Bushido III Trail Running Shoes for $109 ($145)

We praised the Bushido II in 2019 for its superb traction and excellent durability. This newer model for and offers much of the same grip and build quality but with improved outsoles, increased breathability, and a wide fit option. This lightweight trail runner is designed to slide on like a sock, eliminating painful pressure points and decreasing the possibility of blisters. (As a bonus, the mesh lining is entirely recycled material.) A 1.5mm rock guard helps protect your feet on the roughest, rockiest trails, while 4mm lugs make for an aggressive grip on gravelly, scree-covered slopes.

On a Budget? 8 Affordable Hiking Apparel and Footwear Picks We Love

One of the greatest things about much of the wilderness in this country? Exploring it is free for anyone with a sense of wanderlust. But getting kitted out for a trip into the wild? That鈥檚 a very real, cost-dependent barrier to entry. I鈥檒l admit that my first backpacking trip as a cash-strapped hiker was done in unforgiving denim jeans and a leather jacket. Thankfully, there are a multitude of low-budget options for quality hiking and backpacking apparel鈥攊f you know where to look. Below is a smattering of my favorite tried-and-tested budget-conscious clothing.

Merrell Speed Eco Hiking Shoes - Women's
When I wore these while hiking in the Rocky Mountains, I particularly loved the built-in toe and heel brakes on the sole pattern (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

Merrell Speed Eco Hiking Shoes for $110

Unfortunately, eco-focused apparel and footwear often comes at a premium. But these lightweight hikers from Merrell are mostly made from recycled material, laces to footbed, and come with a very reasonable $110 price point. They鈥檙e great shoes in their own right, too. Sewn with recycled jacquard and mesh, with a grippy, 30% recycled rubber outsole, the pair weighs in at a scant 20.1 ounces. When I wore them hiking in the Rocky Mountains, I particularly loved the toe and heel brakes on the sole pattern, which kept me stable while tramping across tree roots and gravel.

Columbia PFG Tamiami II Long Sleeve Shirt for $25 ($50)

Designed to be a sweat-wicking, sun-shielding long sleeve for anglers who are out on the water all day, this lightweight sun shirt has become my summer hiking staple. That鈥檚 because its UPF 40 protection and ventilating, mesh-lined back panel keep me cool and sunburn-free when I鈥檓 up in Colorado鈥檚 high alpine. Two small, zippered pockets on the women鈥檚 version fit keys and lip balm for when I鈥檓 going out for a quick dog walk without making the top feel like a full-on safari piece.

Decathlon MT100 Hooded Down Puffer Jacket for $100

We鈥檝e written about Decathlon鈥檚 well-loved puffy jacket many times over the years for its very competitive price point. I鈥檝e worn this baby on late-season hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park and on snowy dog walks around my Boulder neighborhood. It鈥檚 made with a soft polyamide fabric and Responsible Down Standard-certified 800-fill power insulation. It鈥檚 also fitted around the waist and hips, making it easy to layer under a shell.

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Jacket
This jacket delivers the two-layer breathable waterproofing you鈥檇 find in a pricier shell. (Photo: Courtesy of REI)

REI Co-op Trailmade Rain Jacket for $70

With its funky, high-vis colors and prints, REI鈥檚 Trailmade Rain Jacket hits an impressive $70 price point while still delivering a two-layer, breathable waterproofing you鈥檇 find in a pricier shell. Its cinchable hood helps keep errant droplets out when the wind kicks up, while zippered hand pockets make it easy to stash a few small essentials, like a phone and a paper map. Hikers looking for a slightly more waterproof, breathable shell can fork over $30 extra for the brand鈥檚 (still extremely affordable) Rainier jacket.

Decathlon Quechua MH100 Hiking Shorts for $25

Hiking shorts shouldn鈥檛 cost a fortune, and this pair from Decathlon hits the sweet spot between comfort and fit at an exceptional $25 price point. Weighing-in at 3.9 ounces for a size medium, these lightweight shorts are designed with slightly stretchy, durable polyester fabric that dries quickly and wicks moisture well. Two basic-but-functional hand pockets and a semi-elastic waist round out this hiking kit staple.

Columbia Newton Ridge Waterproof Hiking Boot for $60 ($100)

Columbia鈥檚 popular Newton Ridge Hiking Boot hits all the marks for a sturdy hiking boot. It boasts excellent ankle support and midsole cushioning for moderate backpacking loads. A seam-sealed grain leather and suede upper is waterproof and plenty durable for years of abuse. And a sticky, widely spaced lug pattern does well in everything from slickrock to mud. Pro tip: while these boots are already some of the best-priced you鈥檒l find anywhere, they routinely go on sale for $60.

Teva Original Universal Sandals
Teva鈥檚 Original Universal Sandals have a cult-like following for a good reason: they last for what feels like forever.
(Photo: Courtesy of REI)

Teva Original Universal Sandals for $27 ($55)

I鈥檓 not usually a hiking sandals person, but Teva鈥檚 Original Universal Sandals have a cult-like following for a good reason: they last for what feels like forever. They鈥檙e also so comfortable that I鈥檓 partial to throwing them on to walk my dog around town whenever it gets above 90 degrees. Are they the most grippy or supportive Tevas on the market? No, but for $55, you鈥檒l get durable, soft recycled polyester webbing and comfy EVA foam footbeds that are great for flat trails, walking around camp, and water-based adventures.

Outdoor Research Vigor Grid Fleece Quarter-Zip Pullover for $49 ($99)

For folks in need of a high-output fleece, the OR Vigor checks all the boxes with its moisture-wicking grid pattern. The Vigor has flat seams and enough stretch to move comfortably while bending over or reaching up, while thump loops make for easy layering on frigid days. A zippered chest pocket is also handy for stashing keys and a wallet on quick runs or trips to the gym. Best of all? It鈥檚 protected by Outdoor Research鈥檚 鈥淚nfinite Guarantee鈥 in the off-chance you manage to bust a seam.

Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots
The Merrell Moab 3 has an upper of performance-suede leather and mesh. (Photo: Courtesy Merrell)

for $90 ($150)

We鈥檝e written about Merrell鈥檚 Moab 3 before, noting that it improved an already great design with a waterproof (yet breathable) M-Select Dry liner and an enhanced, shock-absorbing footbed. The outsoles are built for rugged terrain, too, sporting an exclusive-to-Merrell TC5+ Vibram compound that won鈥檛 quit on granite slabs and mucky uphill slogs. Even better? The Moab 3 also has an increased commitment to sustainability, with 100% recycled laces, webbing, lining, and eyelets.

听for $98 ($130)

We get it鈥攈iking in high-top boots isn鈥檛 for everyone, and have the chops to keep up on-trail with much burlier footwear. Gravel-grabbing 4mm lugs make for aggressive traction on loose, steep trails, while removable EVA foam insoles add cushioning and support in targeted areas. Relatively earth-friendly materials abound in this design, too, from the 100% recycled laces and uppers to Vibram EcoDura outsoles, which use 30% recycled materials.

for $180 ($240)

The Kaha 2 GTX might be the most supportive lightweight hiking boot that I鈥檝e ever tested. At under 2 pounds, these grippy and breathable shoes feel more like a trail runner than a high-top boot with ankle support. Yet, they provide the same trail-grabbing Vibram soles and heel stability you might expect from a chunkier hiker. A Gore-Tex membrane provides waterproofing, upping the ante and making these an ideal three-season boot. Plus, the is also currently on sale for 25% off.

for $145 ($199)

These hiking boots were made for messy, wet conditions. They offer waterproof (yet breathable) Gore-Tex linings, tenacious rubber outsoles, and welded TPU lacing harnesses to customize a secure, dialed-in fit. Aggressive outsole brakes also make for safer trekking across slick or uneven landscapes.

Keen Women's Targhee III Hiking Boots
Keen鈥檚 Targhee III is a mid-height, waterproof hiking boot that’s popular on the trails. (Photo: Courtesy Keen)

for $120 ($165)

Keen鈥檚 Targhee III is one of those fan-favorite hiking boots that I see every time I set foot on a Colorado trail, and with good reason. With soft leather uppers and thick, 4mm lugs, these waterproof boots are made to go the distance. And at 1 pound 12 ounces, the lightweight style offers excellent support and traction without feeling like two bricks strapped to your feet. They鈥檙e also reasonably wide (without feeling too wide), so the design works for a large range of foot shapes.

for $37 ($75)

We ranked Keen鈥檚 as one of our favorite shoes for outdoorsy kids last year, and with this stellar 50% off deal, we鈥檇 be remiss if we didn鈥檛 recommend them again. A secure bungee lacing system makes it easy for little crushers to adjust the fit without having to fiddle with laces, and non-marking rubber outsoles keep the boots stuck to rough, rocky trails. On top of all that, these boots are equipped with the same waterproof, breathable membrane that the company鈥檚 adult shoes are lined with, to help keep feet dry in rainstorms and during mellow stream crossings.

听for $92 ($185)

As someone who鈥檚 rolled her ankles more times than she can count, I鈥檓 a big fan of high-top trail runners that double as ultralight hiking boots. Weighing in at just 1 pound 3 ounces, checks all my boxes. I took a pair on a four-day trek through Chilean Patagonia this year and was impressed with how the grip locked into loose terrain when I was scrambling off-trail with a pack on. The extra-cushy foam midsoles also helped me stay comfy on big-mile days with weight on my back.

Xero Women's Xcursion Fusion Hiking Boots
These minimalist and lightweight hiking boots offer excellent traction. (Photo: Courtesy Xero Shoes)

for $105 ($150)

If you鈥檙e into minimalist running and hiking shoes, chances are you know all about Xero Shoes鈥 excellent traction and design. At just 1 pound 4 ounces per pair, these waterproof hiking boots certainly qualify as ultralight. Plus, they have zero drop soles, burly 3.5 mm lugs for traction, and are made with vegan-friendly materials. Keep in mind: The company recommends ordering a half size up in this style.

for $88 ($125)

We鈥檝e extolled the virtues of Astral鈥檚 extra-grippy TR1 water shoes before, and this hiking-forward version of the design features the same super-grippy, non-marking G15 rubber outsoles. The main difference? This model boasts a more lightweight profile, more mesh, and a slightly lower price point that鈥檚 now nearly 30% off. A 100% recycled upper also adds a touch of sustainability to these low-top shoes.

The Gear I Used During a Backcountry Survival School in Utah

I just spent a week backpacking around Utah鈥檚 Dixie National Forest, learning a mix of primitive and modern survival skills while traversing terrain that ranged from sandy desert canyons to high-elevation pine and aspen forests. The survival gear I carried during this adventure was minimal. I made a lot of it during the trip, like a bow-drill fire kit and a piece of cloth we turned into a backpack. It was hard. Making fire when you鈥檙e cold isn鈥檛 easy. Shivering through the night without a sleeping bag is鈥ell, cold.

I did have some survival gear with me, though not everything I took into the wilderness performed well. My pants ripped, and a fleece jacket I brought collected so much debris that it was like wearing the forest on my back. Fortunately, a handful of items that I used throughout the week shined, making everything easier. Here are the key pieces of survival gear that helped me get through a week of backcountry survival school.

Stetson Bozeman hat

I knew I needed a full-brimmed sun hat to keep the desert ball of fire off my face and neck, but I also knew the temperatures would range from the high 70s to the low 40s. I wanted something that could keep me warm during inclement weather, but not overheat my dome mid-day鈥攕o something straw wouldn’t work. Enter The Bozeman, which is made from 100 percent wool, so I knew it would breathe in the heat and keep me warm when the temperature dropped.

A cowboy hat

Even better, it鈥檚 part of Stetson鈥檚 Crushable hat series, which features stylish lids that can be packed away, sat on, shoved into a backpack, slept on, and they will reform back to their original shape. I abused this thing, even using it to pad my homemade backpack straps at one point, and the hat always popped back into shape when I needed it. Not only did it keep me from burning in the sun, but it鈥檚 naturally water resistant and worked as an umbrella, which kept my head dry during rain showers. The Bozeman gets the MVP of survival school award.

Pendleton blanket

Pendleton Olympic National Park blanket听

About halfway through the week, us students 鈥渆arned鈥 a blanket, which we turned into backpacks during the day and became our sole source of warmth at night. I brought one of Pendleton鈥檚 National Park series of blankets, which are made from thick, pure virgin wool. You can pick your size, from twin to king, and I went with the full, which was a little heavy while carrying it throughout the day, but I didn鈥檛 complain about the extra fabric at night.

We slept exposed to the elements each night, and this blanket formed a cozy barrier that kept me perfectly warm until the sun came up. It was also easy to brush the debris off the fabric, which doesn’t sound important, but is actually a big deal when you鈥檙e rolling around in leaves, dirt, and sticks all night.

We were allowed one sweater during this adventure, and I went with this 100 percent merino wool layer that has been part of my ski kit for a few years. I chose it because I knew it had a great warmth to weight ratio and could handle moisture well. Good thing too, because it rained on us one afternoon as we were climbing to 9,000 feet. I slipped into this sweater to stay warm, and it dried completely before nightfall when I needed it to keep me warm as I slept. It also looks great, too. Just because you鈥檙e surviving in the desert doesn鈥檛 mean you can鈥檛 look cute.

Altra Olympus 6 running shoe

I鈥檝e run in Altra鈥檚 Lone Peak sporadically in recent years, and I like the company鈥檚 take on the zero-drop shoe concept, which boils down to an even amount of cushioning throughout the footbed. When you compare that to other shoe companies that achieve zero drop by removing most, if not all of the cushion, it seems like a pretty smart choice. For this particular adventure, I knew I would be on my feet for several hours each day, so I wanted the most cushion possible, which led me to the Olympus 6.

The Olympus 6 is a zero-drop, max-cushion beast of a trail runner that many A.T. thru-hikers rely on for consistent comfort and performance. I hiked a variety of terrain, trudging through thick sand, scrambling down sandstone slot canyons, and jumping over creeks, and the Olympus handled it all like a champ. I appreciated the roomy toe box (my feet were definitely swelling towards the end of the week) as well as the cushioned cuff, which locked my heel in place while also keeping some of the sand out of my shoe. Most nights were so cold, I kept these shoes on my feet as I slept, and after seven days of constant hiking and wear, I exited the survival school without a single blister or hot spot.

I鈥檒l be honest, I originally packed a much more expensive fixed blade knife for this course. But one of my instructors convinced me to go with this much cheaper option because of its single edge blade, which makes carving wood more straight forward and is easier to sharpen by hand. I鈥檓 glad I switched. I wore this knife on my hip all week and used it to make a variety of tools, from an eating spoon to the hearth-wood at the center of my fire kit.

It鈥檚 a simple design: a 104-millimeter carbon steel blade is backed by a comfy, rubber grip, making it easy to wield. It can handle fine carving tasks (like fine-tuning the bowl of a spoon) as well as brute tasks like chopping firewood. The moral of this story? Just because a knife is cheap doesn鈥檛 mean it won鈥檛 perform.
