To test the best all-natural lip balms, I went until late January without applying anything to my lips. The result: lots聽of cracking, bleeding, and pain. As you can guess, I was happy to finally uncap a variety of the market鈥檚 most popular ointments and start the healing process.聽

The Test:聽I chose products with all-natural ingredients聽to narrow the field. And while I鈥檓 sure I鈥檝e left out some brands,聽the following eight聽are some of the most common you鈥檒l find in outdoor retailers. For the test, I applied them side聽by聽side on different parts of my lips聽and took notes every 15 minutes to see how each felt and how quickly they started to heal my chapped skin. Afterward, I continued the test by聽spending聽one full day with each stick聽to see how it聽worked over the course of 24 hours.

Portland Bee Balm聽

With just three ingredients鈥攂eeswax, olive oil, and coconut oil鈥斅爄s聽the simplest product here and the most effective. The area where I applied the balm immediately felt and looked better聽and continued to feel soothed throughout the night. After a full day of use, this聽balm almost completely healed my lips with no overpowering scent. Bonus points: it聽was also the least greasy of the bunch.

All Good Certified Organic Coconut Lip Balm聽

聽also did a great job in both聽the short- and long-term tests for overall healing power. Like the Portland balm, this one聽didn鈥檛 have much tingle (which I like), and the subtle coconut scent wasn鈥檛 overpowering. Only downside? It was greasy and messy to apply.

Lip Trip SPF 15

uses聽cinnamon plant聽derivatives to聽protect against the sun鈥檚 rays聽light so your lips won鈥檛 get burned, even if you鈥檙e out for hours on a聽bluebird day. Aloe and lanolin made it聽plenty soothing,聽but it had the worst smell of the bunch.

Soothing Touch Lemon Cardamom Lip Balm

I could feel the 聽tamping down the inflammation in my lips almost immediately because of the in its formula. After several hours,聽it kept my lips feeling good, but I found that it didn鈥檛 have quite the same long-term healing power of the Portland or All Good balms. It did smell the best of everything I tested聽(reminiscent of聽Lemonades聽Girl Scout Cookies).

Eco+Lips Medicinal Lip Balm

This was the balm, and it delivered the strongest initial punch, thanks to a mixture of peppermint and tea聽tree oil. These ingredients immediately started to soothe my lips聽but also left them slightly numb. Long聽term, Eco+Lips聽was right in the middle when it came to leaving my lips feeling less cracked and angry, but it didn鈥檛 completely heal them.

Badger Lip Balm Highland Mint

, which also uses peppermint oil,聽had a more subtle聽initial punch than the Eco+Lips stick, which was nice. But it didn鈥檛 soothe quite as well聽as some of the other balms. I did, however, like the strong peppermint smell, which helped mask my coffee breath.

Dr. Bronner鈥檚 Peppermint Organic Lip Balm

I was expecting a one-two punch from this lip balm because聽the company鈥檚 peppermint soap is so strong, but it was . The peppermint smell is聽also more subtle than that of the聽Badger balm. In terms of healing power, Dr. Bronner鈥檚 helped my lips both short聽and long聽term聽but didn鈥檛 stand out in any way.

All Good Lips SPF 15 Original

鈥檚 original formula聽uses聽zinc to deliver UVA and UVB protection. Hearty doses of聽calendula聽and聽comfrey聽put it聽on par with the best聽soothing lip balms from the non-SPF category. Unlike聽Lip Trip, this balm聽had a clean聽herbal and citrus scent.
