I tend to get sentimental about my gear. I鈥檒l hold on to a pack or a pair of skis for as long as I can, patching up minor damage to get as much life out of a piece of equipment as possible. But inevitably the point comes when it鈥檚 time to send a favorite jacket or running shoe to the great gear shed in the sky. Since it鈥檚 springtime鈥攖he season when a functioning rain shell is essential鈥擨 spoke with Clara Culp, who does聽repairs for the聽聽in Bend, Oregon. Culp鈥檚 been fixing outdoor equipment for five years, and she says that the shop gets about 30 customers each month who come in with rain shells or pants that need touching up. Here聽she breaks down four common jacket ailments, as well as how to determine if they can be fixed or it鈥檚 time to move on.

DWR Wearing Off

Why It Happens

鈥淭he waterproofing that coats the face fabric will deteriorate over time,鈥 Culp explains. The most common causes are dirt buildup and improper laundering. 鈥淩egular detergent washes off a lot of the聽DWR,鈥 she聽says.

How to Fix It

Culp suggests washing rain gear with purpose-made Nikwax ($22) and ($13) treatment. 鈥淭hat should be the only thing you use to wash it,鈥 she says. Nikwax聽has聽revived quite a few of my ailing jackets over the years.

When to Toss聽It

鈥淚f a 30-year-old jacket is starting to feel grimy or waxy, it聽probably won鈥檛 absorb the treatment anymore,鈥 Culp says. That griminess is a sticky feeling on the exterior, a tell-tale sign that the jacket is ready for the trash.

Busted Zipper

(Sarah Jackson)

Why It Happens

It鈥檚 obvious when a zipper is broken鈥攖he pull snags or comes off completely. Culp says that the coils used on waterproof zips make them聽prone to failure, and when they fall apart聽they鈥檙e聽difficult to repair. The Gear Fix team replaces聽waterproof zippers with simple two-toothed聽YKK ones. They don鈥檛 keep out as much water, but 鈥渢hey鈥檙e way more durable,鈥 she says. 鈥淲aterproof zippers are great if you鈥檙e going to be immersed in water, but they just don鈥檛 last.鈥

How to Fix It

First check with the manufacturer: a broken zipper聽can sometimes be repaired under warranty. If you're out of luck, and you have the skills, you can do it yourself with a sewing machine. 鈥淚t鈥檚 definitely doable at home, but you鈥檒l聽want to do some research first,鈥 Culp says, since you聽need to replace the pull itself plus the teeth. Replacement zips are inexpensive and available at many outdoor shops or online. Important note: the needle will breach the waterproofing as you stitch. Seal up those holes聽with ($8).

When to Toss聽It

If the聽fabric can handle it, you can replace the zipper as many times as needed. But when it becomes so riddled with stitching that it聽can鈥檛 accommodate聽any more, or if the jacket already lets in too much water, best to聽retire it.

Delaminating Layers

(Sarah Jackson)

Why It Happens

Especially on older jackets, the inside lining聽can separate from the waterproof membrane. 鈥淭he main reason is buildup of dirt, sweat, and body oil,鈥 Culp says. To prevent that from happening, she suggests letting the jacket completely dry out before putting it away. Never store it wet鈥攖hat will attract fungus and bacteria that can聽degrade the glue holding the layers together. 鈥淭he material聽needs to breathe for it to maintain its function,鈥 Culp says. Exposing the jacket to heat for a long time is another no-no. Membranes can peel apart if a jacket sits in the sun in your car, for example, which can melt聽the glue holding聽them together.

How to Fix It

鈥淲aterproof-breathable repair tape聽can help keep a jacket from delaminating further,鈥 Culp says. In my experience, ($5) gets the job done.

When to Toss It

While repair tape can do a lot for minor cases, it鈥檚 no聽silver bullet. 鈥淚f the whole inside is peeling, tape is not going to do anything for you,鈥 Culp says. 鈥淭he jacket won鈥檛 protect you from water anymore, and there鈥檚 no way to relaminate it.鈥

Seam-Tape Failure

(Sarah Jackson)

Why It Happens

Seam sealing is an amazing process used to waterproof聽the tiny stitch holes in a jacket. But聽like the jacket鈥檚 layers, it can come unglued if not properly cared for. 鈥淗eat makes the glue melt and the seams come apart,鈥 Culp says.

How to Fix It

If you notice the seam tape starting to peal, nip it in the bud with some repair adhesive. ( works well here, too.)聽In a pinch, carefully ironing problem spots聽can work by reheating the glue enough for it to be sticky again. But Culp advises against touching the iron directly to the jacket, as that聽can melt the fabric.

When to Toss It

If ironing doesn鈥檛 work and repair tape won鈥檛 stick, the jacket is toast.
