If you like crappy weather—or at least camping in places with crappy weather—you’ll shell out the dough for a specialist tent like the Kaitum. On the outside, this caterpillar of a shelter sprouts a web of guy lines that turn the Kaitum into a four-season fortress. Inside, it’s a cavern more than seven feet long, with doors and roomy vestibules at either end. While light enough for three-season use, it’s an honest winter player, ready to burrow into snowdrifts and stow tons of cold-weather gear. The Kaitum sets up fast with just four stakes, but when rigging for a blow you’ll need 18 (!) pegs. 5.5 lbs; www.hilleberg.com
Bonus: The integrated fly/canopy design keeps the inner tent dry when you pitch it in rain.
Bummer: Vents require finicky attention to prevent condensation.
