Like much of New York City, the Brooklyn neighborhood of Red Hook, best known in cycling communites as the host to an eccentric, annual urban criterium in October, is still reeling in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. In light of the damage, organizer David Trimble has teamed up with Castelli Cycling to raise funds for the recovery. Trimble and Castelli designed a聽special edition Restore Redhook jersey and are donating the proceeds to two local organizations helping with hurricane relief, 聽(RHI) and 听(搁搁贬).
In Red Hook, dozens of local businesses, homes, shops, and artist's studios were inundated and millions of dollars of property and inventory lost. RRH has created a from locals with first-hand images of the flooding and destruction. The Red Hook Criterium wasn't spared. According to Trimble, waist-deep waters that filled his space, which he shares with boutique cycling company Gage + Desoto, damaged equipment and ruined merchandise.
Sales of the Restore Red Hook jerseys have exceeded expectations, with over $25,000 raised so far. The -produced design is available in both race-weight short-sleeve ($100) and thermal long-sleeve versions ($120). They are for sale at by pre-order through December 1, and jerseys will be delivered in mid-January.
