Congressional legislators from Utah on Thursday proposed a bill that would legalize construction of a gondola linking Canyons Resort to nearby Solitude Mountain. Under the plan, the eight-person lift would traverse a 30-acre parcel of federally protected watershed in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The project would drop travel time between the mountains, currently an hour by car, and increase the resorts’ combined ski-able terrain to 6,000 acres. The idea has been hotly debated in Salt Lake City and is expected to face stiff opposition from environmentalists in Utah and Washington.
