The U.S. Navy has that it will buy 450,000 gallons of biofuel to power a fleet of supersonic jets housed on an aircraft carrier. The algae-based biofuel鈥攚hich will be mixed with regular gas鈥攊s considerably more expensive than traditional fuel at $15 per gallon. But the purchase is part of a Navy plan to get half its fuel from alternative sources by 2016, and President Obama鈥檚 to boost biofuel production. The U.S. Marine Corps has also made inroads into renewable energy in an effort to reduce dependence on supply lines.
