In a report leaked earlier this month, Paraguay’s Department of Indian Afffairs of an uncontacted tribe living on land recently sold to two Brazilian ranching companies. Authorities have discovered evidence of members of the isolated Ayoreo Totobiegosode Indians, including footprints and traps used to catch turtles. Since beginning logging operations, the ranching companies have cleared thousands of acres of forest to make way for cattle ranching. Native-rights activists are calling for a halt to logging operations until authorities can determine whether the logging companies legally acquired the land. Under a United Nations Indigenous Tribal Peoples treaty, it is illegal to make first contact with an uncontacted tribe unless initiated by the tribe.
