Triathlon: The Waning of Tinley?
By Todd Balf (with Martin Dugard and Alison Osius)

Scott Tinley, hoping to rub out the memory of a subpar performance at last year’s Hawaii Ironman, didn’t do himself any favors when he chose to headline the season-opening Ironman at Auckland, New Zealand, last March. Tinley had one of the worst days of his career, with a grim 48th-place finish sending him back to the states looking into medical reasons for his recent troubles.
Of course, New Zealand didn’t do wonders for many r茅sum茅s. Gusting winds, rain, and ocean chop wreaked havoc on the sorry-to-be-alive field of 700. Packs of swimmers were tugged off course, with many washing up 200 yards from the finishing chute. In the men’s field, two-time champion Ken Glah was second out of the water and took over the lead on the bike leg. But
Germany’s Stefan Holzner made big inroads into Glah’s three-minute-plus lead, dropping him at mile 80. The German clocked a personal best, 2:59:36, and took his first Ironman.
