Triathlon: Ask Mr. Ironman

If you placed bets on last year’s triathlon season, Andy Carlson was the ultimate preseason gamble. In 1990 he was Triathlete magazine’s Rookie of the Year and a star-to-be. In 1991 he was a disaster. Unfocused and beset by personal problems, Carlson ended the year with only two third-place finishes. So what did he do? After Mike Pigg outkicked him
in San Jose last June, the 25-year-old Carlson rang Mr. Ironman, Dave Scott, and flew to Boulder to train under his tutelage. Scott concentrated on Carlson’s biking, and it seems to have paid off. At the Bud Light Triathlon Series Las Vegas Championship in late September, Carlson built a solid lead three miles into the bike leg and buzzed the notoriously unkind desert course in
2:00:57. Runner-up Brad Beven was more than a minute back, and Pigg, dogged by a bad ankle, wound up sixth in 2:03:36. Said Carlson, “Dave told me to be aggressive and get my face on TV.”
