Lonesome George, the last remaining Pinta giant tortoise, on Sunday. Edwin Naula, the head of the Galapagos National Park, said that George’s keeper of 40 years found his motionless body. “His life cycle came to an end,” Naula said. Scientists in the Galapagos had spent years trying to mate the tortoise to females of a closely related subspecies, but none of the three clutches of eggs produced hatched. A spokesperson for the park said that they would conduct a necropsy to determine what killed the animal, believed to be over 100 years old.
