Thorpe Seventh in Return to Swimming

Five-time medalist hasn't raced since '06

Ian Thorpe, the once-dominant swimmer from Australia who retired from the sport in 2006, finished seventh in his return to competitive racing at a world cup event today in Singapore. Thorpe won a combined five gold medals at the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympic Games before quitting the sport at age 24. In February, Thorpe announced that he would for the 2012 Olympics in London, raising the prospect of a match up against American Michael Phelps. Now 29, Thorpe finished second-to-last in Friday’s 100-meter individual medley, three seconds behind winner Chad le Clos of South Africa.
