Sport Climbing: Tres Bon, Robyn
By Todd Balf (with Jim Kelly, Martin Dugard, and Alison Osius)

Robyn Erbesfield has no peer in sport climbing. Period. At the World Cup finale last December in Birmingham, England, she out-jousted France’s Natalie Richer in the women’s superfinal to cap an undefeated World Cup season and win her third consecutive tour title. In fact, the 31-year-old American expatriate, who lives in France, was an impressive fifth if you include the 13
men, since their final was contested on an almost identical and equally technical route. OK, she did have one loss this season, a non – World Cup event in France, a mere five weeks after wrist surgery. “When I win my fifth season title,” Erbesfield says, “I’ll think about slowing down. Until then, no way.” Meanwhile, there are encouraging signs of parity in men’s sport climbing —
Francois Legrand lost his first World Cup title in five years to countryman Francois Lombard.
