Deepwater Wind plans to break ground on the first U.S. offshore wind farm聽 after Rhode Island moved to fast track development of the project. The initial 30-megawatt Block Island facility will power 10,000 homes in Rhode Island, but the company is aiming to build three additional 1,000-megawatt along the New England coast. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has indicated that offshore wind power in the Atlantic has the potential to produce more electricity than all U.S. onshore wind-generating projects combined.
