Elouise Cobell, an activist who over mismanagement of Indian land, passed away on Sunday from uterine cancer. Cobell, 65, was the treasurer of the Blackfeet tribe in 1996 when she discovered that the government had failed to pay the tribe almost $50 billion in oil, gas, and grazing royalties. With the help of the Colorado-based Native American Rights Fund, Cobell sued the federal government in 1996, eventually winning a settlement in June.
