The crew of a hijacked ship saved themselves earlier this week the old-fashioned way: with a message in a bottle dropped into the ocean. boarded the the Italy-flagged ship the Montecristo on Monday off the Somali coast in the Indian Ocean. As the pirates approached, the crew sent a distress signal alerting a NATO gunship, but soon after lost contact when the pirates disabled this ship’s communications equipment. Meanwhile, the Montecristo‘s 27 sailors holed up in a safe room, wrote out a message explaining that they were unharmed, put the message in a bottle, and threw it out a window. Upon reading the note and realizing that the crew were protected, a team of boarded the ship and arrested the pirates.
