The Matterhorn will be closed to climbers on July 14, the 150th anniversary of the first ascent of the iconic peak, .听
It will be the first closure in the Matterhorn鈥檚 history and is meant to honor the nearly 600 climbers who have died on the mountain, including four of the seven-man team that first reached the summit in 1865, the Times reports.
The closure will coincide with the unveiling of the redesigned ,聽which, at 10,695 feet, serves as the base camp for most of the nearly 3,000 climbers who summit annually, according to the Times.听
In addition to solar power and an eco-friendly waste management system, the redesigned hut will also have 130 beds鈥40 fewer than in the past. The reduction in beds is designed to limit the number of climbers allowed on the mountain at one time and curb crowds. Between 500 and 1,000 fewer climbers will reach the summit each year, the Times reports.
