Residents of the coastal areas of northwest British Columbia have been told to seek higher ground inland following a late Saturday tsunami warning brought on by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake and its aftershocks. “A major earthquake occurred in the Haidi Gwaii region,” according to a statement released by Natural Resources Canada. “It was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel and Houston.” While no damage has been reported at this time, marina workers in the area reported seeing boats leaping out of the water. The tsunami warning, issued for an area stretching from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, included the possibility of “widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents.”
