Days after telling reporters that he would be at the XTERRA World Championships triathlon, Lance Armstrong attacked the swim and bike sections of Sunday’s race in Maui before fading, crashing, and dropping from 2nd overall to 23rd by the finish, 10 minutes behind winner Michael Weiss of Australia. Great Britian’s Leslie Paterson won the women’s race despite a flat tire on the bike leg and a nasty fall less than a mile from the finish on the run. She overcame a six-minute deficit at the start of the 10K to defending champion Melanie McQuaid, who collapsed with likely heat exhaustion some 400 meters from the finish.
