Calm winds on the Red Sea this week stranded a Polish wind surfer who was attempting to ride 124 mile across from Egypt to Saudi Arabia, forcing him to fight off sharks with a pocket knife for two days while he waited for help. Jan Lisewski, 42, was roughly 40 miles off the coast of Saudi Arabia when winds died and his kite collapsed. Lisewski fought off sharks for 40 hours before rescuers from the Saudi coast guard picked him up. “I was stabbing them in the eyes, the nose and gills,” he said. Lisewski gained fame last July .
