The event also marked the third consecutive in which Slater and Wright have competed in the final heat, sparking what could be a new surfing rivalry and simultaneously making ASP history: Never before have the same two surfers reached the finals in three consecutive events. Wright, 21, is in his sophomore year on the world tour and won his first event earlier this month at the . Slater, who is 39 and among the oldest competitive surfers in the world, is a ten-time ASP world champion. His win at Trestles was his 48th elite ASP World Tour victory and third already this year.
