American Olympic gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky improved on her own world record time for the 1,500-meter freestyle in a preliminary heat on Monday morning at the world swimming championships in Kazan, Russia, .

鈥淚鈥檓 in quite a bit of shock right now,鈥澛燣edecky . 鈥淚 was barely even focusing on this morning鈥檚 swim. I was so relaxed 鈥β營 realized kind of toward the end because I could see people waving.鈥

The 18-year-old native of聽Bethesda, Maryland, has set eight new world records in the 400-meter, 800-meter, and 1,500-meter events. As 国产吃瓜黑料 wrote in August 2014, Ledecky bagged three world records over the course of 15 days a year ago, including the historic time of 15:27.71, set at the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. Her time in Kazan beat that by 0.65 seconds.

The world championships in Kazan have already seen four women break world records in separate events, including Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden in the 100-meter butterfly聽and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary in the 200-meter聽individual medley.
