Fresh on the heels of Dennis Kimetto鈥檚 marathon world record in Berlin this past September, another record in the event was broken on Sunday when a group of Irish men and women met at a track to run a marathon relay.
More than 105 runners in Limerick, Ireland, took turns running the 105.5 400-meter laps, averaging 66.5 seconds for each circuit. Their finishing time of 1:56:54 broke the previous world鈥檚 best by almost 14 minutes, .
鈥淚 am delighted that all proceeds will go to a local charity, Cliona鈥檚 Foundation, who provide financial support to families with a seriously ill child,鈥 Derek Casey of sponsor Limerick Brakes told I Love Limerick. 鈥淭his is a wonderful achievement and we are so delighted that the record was broken in Limerick.鈥
While runners of all abilities participated in the event, the time was substantially lowered thanks to 15 runners splitting their laps faster than 60 seconds. Larkin O鈥機onners and Jenna Bromell of the Emerald Athletic Club ran the fastest splits of the day: 54 seconds and 57 seconds, respectively.
