Canadian musher Gerry Willomitzer was forced to withdraw from the Iditarod trail sled dog race in Alaska after losing one of his dogs. Willomitzer was about 25 miles from the race鈥檚 halfway point on Sunday . After searching for 36 hours, he learned that the dog has been found and taken elsewhere. The rules of the Iditarod require that mushers arrive at checkpoints with as many dogs as they had leaving the previous checkpoint. When officials decided that Willomitzer did not have enough time to retrieve his missing dog, he was removed from the race. Former champion Mitch Seavey was in the lead as of Monday.
