Austrian Anna Fenninger won her second gold medal of the Vail world championships in Thursday鈥檚 giant slalom, . She was the fastest in the first of two runs, and she overcame a dicey moment during the second run, where she had only one ski on the ground, to win by more than a second.
It鈥檚 been a banner world championships for Austrian skiers. They鈥檝e taken eight medals, including the team competition. That鈥檚 more than double the medals held by any other country.
Nineteen-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin was the top American competitor, winning eighth place. She鈥檒l have a chance to defend her world title in the slalom on Saturday. Lindsey Vonn competed in the giant slalom for the first time in more than two years and placed 14th in her final race of the championships.
Slovenian Tina Maze, who won a silver medal and two gold medals in the three events held so far, placed fifth.
The championships will continue on Friday with the men鈥檚 giant slalom. The event gives American Ted Ligety, current Olympic champion, an opportunity to get back on the podium after his bronze in the combined.
