A group of scientists on an expedition for the spotted and of an adult white killer whale in the waters off of Kamchatka. This is believed to be the observed in the wild. Scientists are looking to find out whether the whale, nicknamed Iceberg, is an albino.
“In many ways, Iceberg is a symbol of all that is pure, wild and extraordinarily exciting about what is out there in the ocean waiting to be discovered,” , the co-director of FEROP said in a . “The challenge is to keep the ocean healthy so that such surprises are always possible.”
To figure out whether he is albino, they will need to get a look at his eyes to check if they are pink. Scientists say that true albino killer whales often die young because of weakened immune systems. Given the , six feet, scientists estimate he is 16 years old.
