The Tuesday after a brief shootout near Ferron Reservoir, Utah. Troy James Knapp, 45, was reportedly tracked to a cabin in the Ferron Mountains, where he fired at a Department of Public Safety helicopter. No one was injured in the arrest.
Knapp is a survivalist convicted of three burglaries tied to break-ins, and suspected in 30 others. He was known for entering summer cabins in winter, stealing whatever guns and supplies he needed, and leaving bizarre disarray behind. He would deface religious symbols, scrawl threatening messages to authorities, and occasionally riddle the place with bullet holes.
After several years of anonymity, Knapp was identifed in February of last year thanks to photos from a wildlife camera (see above) and prints found in a cabin.
It seems the media attention surrounding his exploits ultimately went to his head. According to the , authorities were tipped off after Knapp identified himself as the fugitive “Mountain Man.”
When a group of people looking for shed antlers on central Utah鈥檚 Ferron Mountain saw the blond-bearded man last Friday, he boasted to them that they had encountered Utah鈥檚 notorious and elusive “Mountain Man,” Emery County Sheriff鈥檚 officials said in a press release Tuesday.
The group of antler hunters … reported the sighting to police.
Authorities released a photo (below) of his arrest, and a press conference is scheduled for this afternoon.
