Engineers across the eastern seaboard checked homes and office buildings for damage on Wednesday in the wake of a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that rattled East Coast cities. The quake, which was centered in Mineral, Virginia, caused cracks to appear in the top of the Washington Monument and sent the top of a spire at the National Cathedral crashing down to the street. Two at the North Anna power plant, just seven miles from Mineral, automatically shut down when the quake hit; they’ve since regained power. Mineral itself , with two building collapses confirmed and three of the six schools in the county reporting “heavy damage.”
