On Thursday, a state judge in Alabama cited lack of evidence before an experienced diver of murdering his wife during a 2003 dive in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Tina Watson had been married only eleven days when she drowned while diving alone with her new husband Gabe Watson. A diver on a nearby boat said Mr. Watson gave conflicting descriptions of what happened, including that Tina Watson began to sink and was too heavy for him to bring to the surface. Experts testified that the story wasn’t plausible, as a person’s weight is the equivalent of just 10 to 20 pounds underwater. Prosecutors alleged Gabe Watson turned off her oxygen supply in order to collect money on her life insurance policy. Before throwing out the case, Judge Tommy Nail said the state had to prove a motive. Watson has already served 12 months in an Australian jail after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
