Court Upholds Roadless Rule

Loggers can't cut roads into national parks

A federal district court in Denver on Friday brought by the state of Wyoming that would have opened up nearly 60 million acres of national forests to road building and logging. The court found that a 2001 law barring road building or maintenance in national forests was valid. Pew Environmental Group director Jane Danowitz called the ruling “among the most significant conservation victories in several decades.” Existing roads in national forests will remain open to off-roading and other backcountry activities.
