A bill signed last week has re-legalized the slaughter of horses in the United States, likely reversing a de-facto 2007 ban on the process. On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, President Obama approved legislation to through the United States Department of Agriculture. The slaughter of horses鈥攁nd in particular wild horses in the western United States鈥攊s likely to revive a debate over the ethics of slaughterhouses. But some groups, including PETA, have cautiously welcomed the new law because it is expected to slow the transfer of horses to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.
