Spain’s Juan Jose Cobo clinched an unexpected victory in the Vuelta a Espa帽a on Sunday, springing from near obscurity to win the season’s final grand tour after starting the race in support of teammates Denis Menchov and Carlos Sastre. Cobo, who had considered retirement as recently as this spring, maintained a 13-second lead over British riders Chris Froome and Braddley Wiggins through the race’s final stage into Madrid. “I thought I’d be working for Denis and Carlos throughout the Vuelta, and I’ve ended up winning,” Cobo . Froome and Wiggins were the riders from Great Britain to make the Vuelta podium. Slovakia’s Peter Sagan won 21st and final stage, a 96-kilometer route Circuito del Jarama to Madrid, his third of the Vuelta.
