Climbers looking for funding help on fast and light alpine expeditions can now apply for a . This year’s winners will receive a portion of $25,000 in total funding. The grants will go to “individuals and teams
whose proposed climbs present an outstanding challenge鈥攁 first ascent,
significant repeat or first alpine-style ascent鈥攚ith special emphasis
placed on climbers leaving no trace of their passage.”

Stump came to climbing late, at the age of 26, but threw himself wholeheartedly into
the sport and went after everything from big walls to ice to high
alpine faces. He put up difficult first ascents from Alaska to Antarctica. He was a mentor to Conrad Anker, and to conquer the Shark’s Fin of Meru Central鈥攚hich Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk climbed in 2011鈥攂efore he died during a crevasse fall on Denali in May 1992. At a memorial service in Salt Lake City, his friends and colleagues brought up the idea of an award in his honor. The first grant was given in 1993, and several have been given out since.
