1978
Hisatoshi (鈥淧oppo鈥) Shiraishi and his wife Tsuya moved from聽Tokyo to New York City. Poppo, a modern dancer trained in Butoh, a聽style of Japanese modern dance featuring dancers covered in white body聽paint, soon became known in the East Village art scene and founded his聽own troupe. Tsuya paid the bills by working in sales, and sewed the聽troupe鈥檚 costumes on the side.
2001
Against all odds, and after a decade of trying to conceive a聽child, a 50-year-old Tsuya gives birth to Ashima, the couple鈥檚 first聽and only child. 鈥淭he doctors said she was a miracle baby,鈥 Poppo said.

2006
While playing at a playground in Central Park, a six-year-old聽Ashima becomes fascinated with the sport by watching people boulder on聽Rat Rock, a chunk of black schist-granite adjacent to the playground聽that鈥檚 popular with Manhattan climbers. Her parents buy her climbing聽shoes and a chalk bag, and she鈥檚 soon climbing indoors at gyms every聽day after school.

2008-2010
From ages 8 to 10 years old, Ashima starts turning heads聽for her quick ascents of extremely difficult boulder problems,聽culminated with the V13-rated “Crown of Aragorn,” at the time the聽highest grade achieved by a female climber of any age. Older climbers聽start dismissing her achievements, reasoning that her small fingers聽and light body make the problems easier for her than for others.
2012
An 11-year-old Ashima climbs 鈥淪outhern Smoke鈥 (5.14c) at the Red聽River Gorge, making her the youngest person ever, male or female, to聽climb that grade.
2014
Ashima climbs the V14-rated 鈥淕olden Shadow,鈥 in Rocklands, South聽Africa, making her the second female ever to achieve that grade in聽bouldering.

2015
Ashima knocks off four more V14s, establishing herself as the聽most dominating female boulderer ever, despite being just 14 years聽old. She also proves that she has what it takes to climb on a rope as聽well. During a spring break trip to Japan, she climbs 鈥淥pen Your Mind聽Direct鈥 (5.14d), the hardest sport climb ever achieved by an American聽female climber.

2016
During spring break from ninth grade, Ashima breaks new boundaries聽by becoming the first female to climb a V15 boulder problem with聽鈥淗orizon,鈥 located on Mt. Hiei, a Buddhist enclave in southern Japan.聽A few months later, she climbs another V15. To put her stats into聽perspective, the number of V14 problems that other women around the聽world have climbed is just five problems, completed by only three聽other women climbers. Ashima, meanwhile has personally climbed seven聽problems that are rated V14 or harder. And, at 15, she鈥檚 only just聽getting started.
