CAS Gives Contador Two-Year Ban

The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday banned Alberto Contador from professional cycling for two years and stripped him of his 2010 Tour de France title. Contador tested positive for the steroid clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour de France, and, the court found, failed to provide sufficient evidence that the drug entered his system from tainted beef. “Unlike certain other countries,” the court ruled, “Spain is not known to have a contamination problem with clenbuterol in meat.” The Spanish cycling federation had cleared Contador in early 2011, a decision that the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Cycling Union appealed to the CAS. The case faced numerous delays and was in January that the three-man CAS panel was not impartial. The ban was backdated to August 2010 and will expire in August, after the London Olympic Games. Contador will be stripped of all competitive results since January 2011, including his 2011 Giro d’Italia title. Luxembourg’s Andy Schleck will become the 2010 Tour de France champion
