Brazilian authorities are investigating a shooting on Saturday near a landless workers camp in Minas Gerais state that . The victims were leaders of the Landless Liberation Movement, which advocates for agricultural reform and peasant-farmers’ rights. A five-year-old who survived the shooting told police a car ran them off the highway and then opened fire. Authorities are considering whether the deaths are tied to a dispute between activists and the owners of a sugar mill. The watchdog group Catholic Land Pastoral says land-related assassinations are common in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region, and rarely end in conviction. In more than 1,150 activist murders since 1990, only 15 people have been found guilty of ordering an execution.
