This week, British Olympic gold medalist and Tour de France champ Bradley Wiggins announced he would end his professional road cycling career at this spring鈥檚 Paris Roubaix in preparation to regain his track fitness for a final Olympic run in 2016. A second announcement, issued Thursday, hints at his retirement plans: The 34-year-old says he will to compete on the road and track.
The team, to be named Wiggins, has the backing of British Cycling and Sky, the broadcasting company that sponsors Wiggins鈥 current team. The team鈥檚 racing schedule will be announced in the spring.
In founding the team, Wiggins says he aims to showcase developing British riders. 鈥淚 want to build something to inspire kids and to reach all those people who might be on the fringes of the sport,鈥 he says.
