Former Tour de France winner and current time trial world champion Bradley Wiggins will attempt to break the hour record next summer in Majorca, according to a report in the Spanish island鈥檚 newspaper,聽Diario de Mallorca, .听
One of the most prestigious titles in cycling, the hour record measures how far a cyclist can ride around an indoor track in an hour. The record has fallen twice in the past two months to attempts prompted by the UCI rule change that allows some aerodynamic equipment. The record first fell in early September to fan favorite German Jens Voigt, who rode 31.76 miles. Last week, 24-year-old Austrian Matthias Br盲ndle bested that mark, riding 32.2 miles.
Unlike Voigt and Br盲ndle, Wiggins, who won the 2012 Tour de France, is an accomplished track cyclist, capturing back-to-back gold medals in perhaps the most similar discipline to the hour record now that the UCI rules permit modern track bikes.
