Search teams on Saturday found the bodies of two American climbers who went missing after summitting a 20,000-foot peak in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. Gil Weiss and Ben Horne, 29 and 32 respectively, apparently fell to their deaths from a ridge while descending from the top of Palcaraju. “Unfortunately, they died whenever they fell because they had been there long in the snow,” said Ted Alexander, who owns a guide service in nearby Huaraz and coordinated the search. Weiss and Horne’s families contacted rescuers last week after the alpinists’ scheduled return date . The pair’s death brings the number of climbers who have died in the Cordillera Blanca this season to eight, with over 40 evacuated due to injuries and illness.
